Hi, I am thinking to buy Airpods Max. But since we are near to September now, should i hold on to the purchase? Is there a update coming to Airpods Max like Airpods Max 2?

Only Apple knows, but for now there is 0 report about an upcoming new version of the AirPods Max. Only thing that MR reported about it, is that Apple is testing new colour choices on them. So far the AirPods lineup has been updated very slowly, so I'm not holding my breath for something new this fall

So far only rumors on AirPods Max 2. It does not look like there will be a update coming. We are getting more details on next Apple event, things will be much clear in few weeks

Considering how rarely AirPods in general are updated (AirPods Pro were released in November 2019 and still no update), and the fact that the Max are more of a niche, high-end(ish) product, I doubt we'll see an update within the next 1-1,5 year. I would go for them now and enjoy them, no point waiting for the next big thing, you'll never buy anything this way. I've had mine since early 2021 and still love them.

I’m glad to know people have enjoyed them for that long, I have been wondering about the OP’s questions lately also.

I was bit in dilemma because i really want on-off button in Airpod Max as it saves lot of battery. I was expecting that Airpod max 2 might have that. But since there are no update on Airpod Max 2, I am not sure to go ahead or not with Airpod Max

1. I wouldn't expect a power button.
2. It's a little unlikely that there would be an Airpods Max update this year. Since Airpods Pro are getting their first update three years later, I would guess Airpods Max will get a similar or longer cycle. So something like late 2023 at the earliest.

I doubt it will be updated this year. Maybe next year and hopefully it gets a USB C port to replace the Lightning port.

Do folks who have these headphones know, does the battery really drain that significantly? I can see myself if I get them, definitely not taking the time to return them to that weird purse type case they go in. I’d like to think given their mostly good reviews, that the battery would still be fine if I did that.

I leave mine out of the case all the time and the battery drain seems largely insignificant.

I've appreciated the Airpods Max more than I thought I would, actually. I needed to replace a failing set of Bose and decided to give them a try. They are flawed for sure (heavy and tight, mostly), but I've really appreciated the sound and the build quality and find Spatial Audio to be quite good.

That said, it's worth waiting the month just to see if they come with an actual carry case. I'm not one to bash Apple's small design decisions, but that case is bad. Unexplainably bad.

They drain over the course of a week or so. I've fallen out of the habit of returning my to any sort of case unless I'm traveling. They'll sit out for a week and still have some juice left.

The OG Homepod came out in February of 2018 and only just now are we hearing rumors of the replacement. It may not seem comparable, but they are both high quality music devices that sold in very low numbers.

I don’t think we’ll see an AirPods Max update in 2022.

Good to know, thank you for the feedback! Given the amount of use I get from my current in-ear Airpods, it is tempting to get a nicer and larger at-home pair, and just using the small ones for when I’m out and about.

Funny to call these Max ones “pods”, but I guess pods come in all sizes. 😅 .. still an easier name to say than “Sony WH-1000XM4.”

I would not expect that considering Airpods 3 don't have it, doesn't really go with apple's idea of auto connecting. fwiw I agree they take about a week to drain even out of case if you don't use them.. I had a bigger problem picking up my bose and finding them totally dead because I had forgot to turn them off

at this point waiting a month won't break you especially if you are stuck on the case or are hoping for a different color but I am happy with mine

True. I own Bose N700 from last 3 yer and looking for replacement. I also forget to switch off them and then end up being dead. For case, I am not worried since Spigen case is really good - Spigen Compatible for AirPods Max Pouch Klasden - Charcoal Gray https://amzn.asia/d/5Bqe4GQ. Anyhow i will wait for another month and see if any news

I have this case and can confirm it is a very good case and protects my AirPods when they are in my backpack.

I'm in the same boat. I'm looking to buy some AirPods Max but with the September event just over a week away, it seems foolish to buy now just incase that small chance of Apple announcing a second gen APM happens. I'm not hopeful though.

I guess we can wait for September event but I am also hearing there is October event. If Airpods Pro 2 get announced in September and no update on APM then i guess it will not be announced in October as well.

Just my two cents - I have them since 1,5 years:
  • For me, they are very comfortable even for multiple hours non-stop (relatively small head)
  • The initially (rightfully) criticized battery drain was massively improved with the firmware update a few weeks ago
  • For non-lossless headphones, they are really good (even more with the cable based input from a proper DAC). And keep in mind, the 256 kbps AAC (via Bluetooth) are indistinguishable from lossless to the majority of listeners. The source material (properly mastered; no crappy mp3s) is far more important. And even if there is a difference to full 16 bit (or high-res), that doesn‘t make the Airpods Max sound bad, just slightly less perfect than possible.
  • Of course, if there is a (better) successor, it‘s always appealing. But if not, I would buy the 1st gen in a heartbeat again today. As a matter of principle I just wished the Lightning port would accept digital data via USB instead of the stupid conversion via Apple‘s audio cable.
If Apple actually releases lossless capable BT headphones, I am really excited about ABX blind tests comparing it to AAC 256 transmission with the identical source material. I have seen enough initial posts/reviews praising Apple Music‘s lossless quality while listening via Airpods (which - yes - only receive 256 kbps AAC).

Mine maybe drop a couple of percent over weeks when placed in their case. As far as “taking the time to return them to their case,” in my experience it takes no more time/effort than returning AirPods to their case.

This was my experience as an amateur audiophile. I have my Bang & Olufsen H95 as well and while they sound amazing, the APMs are no slouch for BT streaming.

Three things are for sure
1) no airpods max this year for sure
2) And the chances for wireless lossless is 0 , or at least until BT 6 or something greater
3) Airpods pro 2 will be at the event
