I'm glad it made you guys happy, but my ears aren't so pleased. Next I'm going to try wearing AirPods Pro without the silicone tips to see what happens. After that, I'm thinking about possibly taping 2 iPhones to my ears and using them as portable headphones

Please take a photo and share your experience...!

I had a squeal problem along with rattling on my Airpods Pros, you might be blocking a mic or something while having noise cancellation turned on.

The OP was talking about AirPods Max. The new over the ear headphones from Apple. He removed the ear cup cushions and put them on his head. The squeal was likely feedback since there was no seal to prevent the microphone from picking up the speakers.

Mine did something similar today, I didn't remove the cups, just had the Airpods max laying on the table and when I was about to put them on, there came a high pitched sound from the left earbud. Changing audio source from airpods max and back, made it go away. So it seems it can happen even without removing the cups like OP did

As long as you before doing something formulate a theory ("I wonder what will happen if I do [this]" is enough) it becomes science and not stupid.

I'm a very proud scientist (by some definitions of scientist; not legally binding, ymmv, please consult a professional before taking any action, not meant as actual advice, may contain nuts), so you all can trust me on this. ?

Please tell me the reasons for wanting to use Airpods Max without the earcups?
And I wonder, if there're similar threads on a, let's say, bicycle forum:
"I removed the saddle from my bike and tried to ride it (just to see what would happen) and it made my butt very hurt on the inside. Just a warning! I think I've been permanently butthurted."
?

if you were Mac from Always Sunny you’d have no problem.

Not sure whether to be surprised by the rudeness / condescension toward op. If this happens when messing around with the earcups, one might consider what causes it and if it could happen in other situations. Which I can confirm it does. The first time it happened I quickly took them off (I perceived the loud noise to be like 5x-10x louder than my normal listening volume) and the noise wouldn't stop. To put it into perspective, my gf was in a different room and came out asking "what is that loud noise???". Using the volume dial on the top of the headphones didn't do anything. Had to run to the computer and d/c bluetooth to get it to stop. Audio returned to normal upon reconnecting them but my ears/head were ringing.

The deafening screeching sound has happened on my right side several times now (earcups intact). I take them off and rotate the cups and it usually stops. Are they defective or is this a universal issue?

Not sure why you discount such a serious problem. Well functioning headphones should not randomly produce a painful screech. Wondering if this is a design/software issue or whether mine are defective. I welcome experiences.

My AirPod Max has started doing this at random, or if I press on them (changing the pressure in the cup).

It's really annoying, sometimes I'll be listening to music and suddenly this extremely loud whistling sound comes on. Most of the time it's quick, but sometimes, it goes on for a few seconds. When I hear it starting i usually quickly remove the headphones, but if I'm holding a coffee or something else is preventing me from removing the headphones, it can feel like it's killing my hearing for good.
