They sound scarier because it’s metal on metal. Unless you’re really swinging them around I don’t think they’ll hit each other hard enough to cause any damage.

just the nature of the design. Every pair of cans I’ve owned that lets you fold flat touch earcups.

I think it’s a good trade off. Sure ear cups touch but they take up less room and they have wider range of articulation.

Maybe personal preference but I stopped using the “case” I’ll take the couple percent drain hit for the convenience of taking them off the stand and just putting them on.

Hey, so I went to post about this on /r/apple, but the post never got approved (snobby mods?). I got my APMax a few days ago, and they're excellent but I noticed the clank immediately. I use headphones extensively, so these will be my daily drivers, but I do think I am going to need to be pretty careful with them. Especially when we can start travelling again - although they might be obsoleted by then hah!

i have been observing this on almost every reviewers video.
is that a design oversight?
will that eventually result in a dent and/or scratches in the medium to long term of use given the metallic nature on the aluminium cups?
does it bother you?
Got my first scuff on one side of the clanging spot.

would you say you have been using with all due care or you were just slapping them on and off without "baby sitting" them?

Got my first scuff on one side of the clanging spot.

First of many over time, I'm sure of it.

One year+ old APMs are going to be all beat up at that contact area.

It's a design flaw, particularly when it's metal on metal and both parts that hit each other are so heavy.

I think this is a definite design flaw that comes from the desire to make them reversible.

One thing I will say. I learned long ago that well worn equipment has its own kind of charm. No garage queen or safe queens for me anymore. Use them! Whether it is a car, a watch, or your AirPods Max, let them get their battle scars!

Wear all over might be charming eventually, but “bang marks” in a specific spot honestly just looks bad.

It is all perspective. I see someone with a camera that is pristine and I see someone that does not take photos. If their camera is beat to hell, I think there are a lot of great photos and fun stories to go with it. If I were to see some dented, scuffed, scratched AirPods Max, I see a pair of headphones that are loved.

Minor marks on mine, not a biggie to be honest, quite like the clank sound
