Do you even have the Sony XM4 that you say these are “miles ahead of”? Saying that they “noticeably” better at noise canceling? I’ll be curious to see what the reviews who do side by side tests say. Because those are some bold statements. Please provide examples of where the noise canceling was noticeably better than the Sony XM4.
What’s with the hostility man? Just calm down and wait for a proper audiophile’s review on this if your answer couldn’t be found here.

So they move the weight to your ears rather than your head?
....
Yeah ok.
Also: why do people wear cans on their ears at the gym? Do these people not sweat, or do they just not care if their several hundred dollars worth of headphones start smelling stank and musty?

Just picked up my AirPods Max space grey from an Apple Store here in Sydney Australia. They released stock for pick up and I was delighted as I missed out on the original batch of delivery.

First impressions

+ Premium quality and very well made. Miles ahead of the plastic in the Bose QC35 and Sony XM3/XM4. The aluminium is cold to the touch and feels nice.
+ Headband mesh is soft and does not apply much pressure to your head. I can barely feel that it’s there.
+ Fabric ear cups are light and airy and they don’t feel stuffy like the Sony or Bose. Less clamping sensation that the Sony or Beats Studio that I had (which I hated). They’re like ear pillows.
+ Active noise cancelling - They’re amazing - To my ears, they are better than the Bose and Sony. Also better than the AirPods Pro. Probably a combination of the large number of mics and the computational audio it does in the background.
+ Sound quality. I’m no audiophile so I can’t tell you how much better they are compared to Bose and Sony. Listened to a few tracks on Apple Music and to me, they sound better to me than either. No distortion when volume is increased to the max. Crisp highs and thumpy base. But not over the top like the Beats.

- Smart case does not protect the headphones at all. It has the same finish as the iPad smart cover and attracts smudges like no tomorrow. I’m too scared to put this into a backpack as is and will need to look for third party cases that cover the whole thing
- Weight. They are much heavier than Bose and Sony but the headband mesh sort of distributes the weight to the ear cups. I’ve been wearing them for 45 mins or so and I'm starting to notice the weight on the ears (not the top of the head). Great for listening to audio when you’re static at home or in the office but probably not one to take to the gym.

Will I keep it? Most likely. Is it worth the price. They are to me.
Will test this out over the next few weeks in different scenarios and see how it fits in with my daily routine.

Is there a Apple product that comes out you don’t buy? Lol.

Yep and it's also part of the reason for long delivery times for people that genuinely wish to buy the products.
Just because you can return something doesn't mean people buy these things to return them. I also immediately ordered them at release. If I don't like them, I'll return them. But I didn't buy them to return. Something like an headphone must be used some time before deciding whether to keep them or not. Reviews are useless since audio signature and comfort are subjective. I used B&W PX7 for couple weeks but then it was too late to return them, so I sold them. I didn't like their ANC, it made my head ache after a while. And that certainly was not noticeable immediately nor could I have realized that in a store demo.

I think it's great to have such a return policy, especially on something like a headphone.

What are/were they, what codecs do they support and what device is the source.

Whatever the format, it'll be converted to AAC on the Apple cans, with an Apple device .. Other headphones / phones will convert to whatever they use, LDAC / APT-x etc ...

In theory there should be no difference between Apple Music and Tidal on Apple earphones AAC > AAC. But you might notice sound quality drop if you were going FLAC to AAC for example due to re-encoding.
Tidal uses FLAC for its HiFi service. I am using the Tidal app and Teufel Real Blue NC (small audio manufacturer from Berlin). But also Bose headphones seem to get better sound out of FLAC files than Apple Music or Spotify.

How did you check noise cancellation?

In my experience - having owned a lot of noise cancelling headphones since some Bose headphones more than a decade ago - the acid test is flight travel. Things like local trains are also demanding.

Most of them - even the crappest I've had (Beats studio wireless 2) - handled things like ventilation/office environment pretty well. Where the Sony and Bose high end really shine is in tough conditions.
I don't have the XM4's on hand anymore so I wasn't able to do a side-by-side comparison, but I can still remember how they performed with a few things like (pretty loud) background TV/voice chatter, road noise both inside and outside vehicle(no I wasn't driving with them on ;)). But you are right, for general white noise there isn't a huge difference between any of them.

I've used Airpods Pro on flights several times and Airpods Max are at least as good as those, and I thought APP's noise cancelling was better than XM4. Though comparing in-ears to over-ears isn't easy.

Are you all using Apple Music with your AirPods Max? In my opinion (after trying this out) switching to Tidal HiFi/Master has a greater effect on sound than switching from my $200 NC headphones to more expensive ones. Didn‘t test the AirPods Max though.
I am literally an audiophile professional, and I disagree with that as a broad statement. You are comparing two different sets of quality changes, that don’t directly relate to each other. No headphone can fix a compressed source, but even high quality headphones can have wildly different balance of sound, which to most people will be a much bigger change than compressed vs non-compressed. Also, if we’re talking Bluetooth, everything is compressed.

But some...not all people do buy just to try out with every intention of returning. There are lots of posts where people admit to buying an Apple product such as an iPhone 12 whilst they wait for the 12 Pro to come out with no intention of keeping the 12.

I would not wear this $1000 headphone to gym no matter what. And ANC better be amazing imo, as over the head headphone has natural advantage in terms of noise cancelling.
Smart case providing next to no protection is concerning, though not surprising, but third party case may not trigger AirPod Max low power mode at all, meaning battery life will suffer.
I guess a lot of features are powered through battery. So when it is out of battery, its just a glorified wired headphone with nothing special. I hope this is not the case.

That’s where you lost me in credibility

there is zero, zero chance that an in ear headphone with a 9mm driver, at best, is better at cancelling noise than any over head noise cancelling headphone
Not at all true. Two different designs - both have the potential to be equally effective. If one were to take the APP design - say an Etymotic with their tri-flange tips - which passively are better than any ANC system - and add ANC on top of that - it'd be better still. The APP's are effectively using that same design with less passive isolation.

Anyhow, I can say with absolute certainty that my APP's are better at silencing certain frequencies than my XM3's. Last spring when covid lockdowns started, and I moved to working from home, I had a small space heater with a fan running 8 hours a day right next to my desk. I tried both back and forth extensively - and for the frequency of that specific noise, the APP's were better.

As these only have a lightning port and not a 3.5mm passthrough like the Sony XM4's I doubt they will work at all with no power as there is nothing to power the ADC. It doesn't matter too much though as a 5 min charge gets you 1.5 hours use apparently.

But even if they did work, of course they would just be a 'glorified wired headphone' because there would be no power to use the ANC or dynamic EQ. It is physically impossible for sensors and noise cancelling to work without power on any headphones on planet earth unless you have invented some?

I am in the market for some headphones as my Bose qc35's are wearing badly (foam ear pieces falling apart and on/off switch turns on for no reason flattening battery). I've always been happy with the sound and noise cancelling of my Bose - and I can afford the exorbitant price apple wants for these in Australia...

BUT

I will not buy these, because the cover thing looks stupid. and feminine. and I'm a bloke - I don't carry a purse.
and I will not pay $900 AUD for these, only to have to buy a proper case from a 3rd party that's just stupid.

so Sony - here I come.

Keep in mind they won't turn off in low battery mode until you put them in the so called case. Apple just forced people to use this "case" no matter what..

According to some reviewers early impressions they do go into low power mode after two hours without usage when not put in the case.

How is it that Australia gets pick-up stock?! So unfair!

I was up and refreshing the page since around 6AM but it seems like there is no stock available at Apple Stores in the UK. Unless they are releasing later in the day? ?

(Seems like no stock at Curry’s or John Lewis either...)
