That's exactly what's happening to mine. I really had no issues with how they worked before this feature.

I guess I'll disable auto connect and hope I remember to turn it back on when its fixed!

Edit... how do you disable it please?!

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on Bluetooth.
  3. In the list, tap the little "i" next to your AirPods.
  4. Tap "Connect to this iPhone".
  5. Change setting to "When Last Connected to This iPhone".

On the Mac go to Bluetooth settings and connect your AirPods. Once connected you will see a button to the right of the AirPods that says "Options". Click that and change the setting under "Connect to This Mac" from "Automatically" to "When Last Connected to This Mac". Let me know if this helps

Hmmm, this still isn't working. No matter what I do, the AirPods keep reconnecting to my MacBook Air. I've forgotten the device, reset the AirPods, forgotten it again, but they seem determined to switch to the Air.

They're also struggling to connect to the iPhone now. Despite being a recognised device, I can't seem to put audio to them all the time. The phone also seems to forget them regularly as well. Very frustrating.

Another example of the issues this morning. Pop the APP in to make a call while in the car.....talking to the person and it decides to switch to the car bluetooth on its own. I manually switch back to the APP. Thirty seconds later, auto-switches back to the car. Person hangs up (as she thinks the call became disconnected).

I pop the APP back in the case, close the case and then re-open and place the APP back in my ear hoping that will somehow "reset" the auto-switching. Person calls me back, takes forever for the APP to autoswitch to the phone so I end up answering through the car. I manually switch back to the APP. Thirty seconds later, it autoswitches back to the car. Rinse, repeat one more time. At that point, I give up and use the car's bluetooth.

The current implementation is utterly maddening and obnoxious. "It just works"......sure...about half the time.

This is driving me to insanity. Even after changing settings the Mac still wants to connect to the Airpods, even when I've just started a Zoom call and have them connected to the iPhone.

I was about to post something similar here. Except for me its getting the AirPods max to sync with my MacBook.

It works flawlessly with my iPhone and iPad but with the Mac I have to manually connect it and worse the volume doesn't seem to sync between them. Meaning if I use the crown it only goes up to the max on the headphones but I also have to adjust it on the Mac too. Very frustrating.

Has this noticeably improved for anybody in recent versions? It's driving me pretty crazy at times, especially on macOS. But it's bad on iOS and iPadOS as well. And it was released 5+ months ago.

It constantly switches away from the devices I'm using for absolutely no reason. If I'm watching something on my iPad and pick up my iPhone to read an article or reply a message, they switch to my iPhone even though I'm doing nothing audio-related. I can 'undo' it on iPad if I'm fast enough, but it'll happen again ad infinitum.

On macOS it has the added problem of switching the audio codec and the device. AirPods Pro audio is truly awful when the input device is set to the AirPods Pro microphone. And it switches for no reason, again. Sometimes the AirPods stay connected, but the input device is suddenly switched. So I need to keep System Preferences open to switch back constantly, even though I set ToothFairy to automatically switch codecs when the AirPods are connected.

The last 18 months of my 10 years on Apple devices are feeling a whole lot like when I was an Android user, when bugs were introduced and you'd honestly never know if they were going to be fixed.
