Same issue here. So much so that eventually the battery in both the AirPods and case run down to zero (I keep the case in my car’s center console). Then, when I go to use them, they’re at zero battery which is frustrating in the extreme. Makes me wish for the simplicity/reliability of the old “pre-courage” wired connection…
Do have ear detection turned off. I had it turned off and after I turned it on the issue disappeared.

Thanks for the tip. I’ve just turned on ear detection and am hoping for the best…

2022-03-23 edit: It worked! Since making the change, the AirPods have not been connecting despite being in their charging case. Thanks again.
