Amazing with all the news today that this is the only with more positive ratings than negative. Sure wish my AirPort Extreme BS had the dual networking capabilities. I have a Netgear setup for my guest network.

Funny with all of the excitement leading up to Today that the real improvements don't happen to Mac Pro, iMac, or long awaited Mac mini but instead AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.

I too find it astonishing that AirPort updates are the best new product news on a day when all of Apple's desktop Mac lines were "updated"....

I've installed both Airport updates and still nothing. Is there a MM update out that I haven't seen yet?

From what I can piece together, AirPort Utility 5.4.1 is done and the Help indicates that it will be as easy as plugging MMe information into an Advanced settings area, but that is only going to become active once AirPort firmware 7.4.1 is released, which as far as I can tell, hasn't been, but any minute now...

...or you know, later today.

Just recently bought TC and got good news!

I bought a new TC 17 days ago. The "official" return policy for the retail stores is 14 days. I talked to the manager of the local Apple store this morning and he said bring the old one in on Thursday (when the shipment gets in) and he will exchange it.

Hot Little Sucker

Too bad the devices are still the dated white plastic.
I was hoping for shiny black plastic or even an aluminum side with shiny black top.

Otherwise very useful update though they should have lowered the price of the TC by at least $50.

My AEBS gets pretty warm when running at peak power.
The aluminum would be great to disperse the heat from the device. Not sure that the black plastic would help too much though!

FYI...

You can access your base station and any drive connected to it through the internet now, without mobile me.

In your drive options in the airport utility, set the drive to be accessed through WAN, then go to port forwarding and choose file sharing. It basically fills out the info for you. All you need to know is the router's ip address which is display on the first screen when you open the utility. Then, from the finder, you can go to go > connect to server. Punch in your ip address (from your internet provider) and it mounts whatever disk is connected to the router.

I'm listening to my iTunes right now and it's 40 miles away :)

Yeap....Waiting and keep clicking on on Software Update:D:D:D

Has Apple "EVER" updated this much in a single day before?? I wonder what could have possibly been in store for the alleged March 24th event.

dont understand this dual band thing. i want to be able to surf the net in my garden on my iphone. i currently have 2 older airport expresses one in the house and one in a shed in the garden which are connected in a WDS network - it works but is at the extreme of range and sometimes the rate is 11 but sometimes it drops to 5 then 2 then 1. however the iphone will talk to the one in the shed on b or g. i was going to upgrade before this new revision came out to n versions so that the one in the house and the one in the shed were n - hoping that the greater range would mean a better or at least a more consistent rate. now the new AEBS works on both b.g and n - great it can talk to a new AE in my shed on n and hopefully get a better signal. but does this mean that if the AE in my shed can dual band that if i try to talk to it via b or g from my iphone it will break the n connection to the AEBS? so am i no better off? do i need to wait for an upgrade to AEs??
help dont understand and Apple dont seem to have updated their manuals yet

I've been doing some quick looking and just wondering if the following holds true: If you hook up an external USB HDD to the new TC, can you use the MM feature to access that attached HDD? It says you can do this with the new AEBS, but you know how Apple can be with certain things, like the in-ear buds not being officially supported for use with the iPhone and etc....

If I use the TC's HDD it will be for back ups but I would rather save working files to an external USB HDD.

Just wondering.

Also, anyone know if a way has been found to swop out the HDD that is in a TC?
EDIT:http://www.tuaw.com/2008/03/12/changing-a-time-capsules-hard-drive/

I've had my timecapsule doing remote access since a few days after I bought it, almost 4 months ago.
Thing was, the guy in the apple store, told me I could access my files remotely; I thought great! Got home, could I hell...
So I set about making it work :D
I actually wrote all the things I did down and printed a copy off to give to the Apple guy next time I was passing. I'll have a root around to see if I kept it.

But the dual band would be nice!

Many thanks for this!

Time Capsule specs:
"Some ISPs are not currently compatible with Time Capsule."

Why?

according to the article below a firmware update will allow existing Airport Extreme and TimeCapsule owners to use the MobileMe access feature:

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/03/03/apple-updates-time-capsule-and-airport-extreme-with-internet-sha/

Note for existing AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule customers
Existing AirPort Extreme (MA073 and MB053) and Time Capsule (MB276 and MB277) customers can access their AirPort Disk / Time Capsule disk through Mobile Me over the Internet by upgrading to AirPort Utility 5.4.1 and AirPort firmware 7.4.1. Subscription to Mobile Me online services is required for this feature. Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi and Guest Networking features are only available to new AirPort Extreme (MB763) and Time Capsule (MB764 and MB765) customers.

Thats not fair I think. I am not a technician but that new TC its just firmware update. All hardware is the same in compare to old TC's. So why we can't get all firmaware update then? I guess because new TC will loose his "NEW" status then. Its crap politics my dear Apple.
:mad::mad::mad:

At least MMe subscribes where not screwed.

Just quick question relating to Time Capsule.

According to the Apple website you can use it both for back ups (Time Machine) and as an extra storage area for files you don't want cluttering up your laptop's hard drive.

However I've also read several reviews that say that you can't do this and that Time Capsule cannot be partitioned and therefore has to either be used for storage or for Time Machine.

I'm hoping the reviewers are talking rubbish but can anyone here confirm?

Regards
Mark

Not ALL other features. MobileMe AND Guest Networking are going to both be enabled via firmware. In fact, only dual band appears to be hardware specific right now.

Are you sure? See below . . .

As much as i would LOVE guest networking, i don't see it happening. Apple loves making us buy new things . . .

You can store files on the same drive as your backup...those file just won't be backed up. I do it now. No problems. It's not partitioned, I just throw the files on there.

You can't partition it, but you can store other files on it. You access it just like any other drive. The Time Machine backup just looks like a file on the drive.

I've got loads of data stored on mine alongside the Time Machine backup.

The dual-band feature probably requires multiple radios, so it is a hardware upgrade in order to use it.

The Guest Wifi feature is probably something that can be done with a firmware upgrade, unless the old TC and AE do not have the processor or memory capabilities to run it.

Thanks guys

I think my wallet is about to get a little lighter :D

I'm willing to bet that Dual band mode is somewhat hardware based. Most likely, there's 2 Wireless cards in these base stations, one thats A/B/G/N and one thats B/G only. I'd like to see the MobileMe stuff added however
