So remote Time Machine backups then, eh?

Would you really like to start a remote backup? Backups are supposed to be reliable and secure and a remote backup is none of that plus it'll likely take forever for most people ( limited upload speed and such ). So the answer would be NO remote backups.

Why is it cheaper to purchase an Airport Express Base Station + an external 1TB USB hard drive ($179 + $129 = $308) than to buy the 1TB Time Capsule ($499)? Both options offer the same functionality, and a seperate USB hard drive means you can upgrade the storage at a later date, which isn't supported on the TC.

Someone at Apple really dropped the ball; the Time Capsule should NOT cost this much anymore. 1TB hard drives are cheap as dirt these days!

AEBS, Time Machine, Wireless Backup

I should have been a bit clearer with my question.

Currently, one can use Time Capsule to back up with Time Machine wireless, but not AEBS with attached USB hard drive

I was hoping, with these announced software, firmware, hardware updates, that Apple would fix the issue of using an Airport Extreme with an attached USB hard drive, so that Time Machine backups could be done wireless.

The reason it costs more is for the same reason you are complaining about it costing more. Could you get similar functionality from two separate and cheaper devices? Yes. Do people see the value in having it all in one device? Yes, and clearly you do, which is why you are complaining. It costs more because people are willing to pay more for it. I'm sure you knew that though, you just like to complain.

Don't like it? Don't buy it.

Fazekas,

You can use AEBS with an external HDD as Time Machine.

Trust me, anybody is doing that.

That's why people believe Apple is doing a wrong pricing strategy.

If you don't trust me or anybody else, just go to Apple Store, and they'll tell you the exact same story.

AEBS + External HDD --> Time Machine capability.

To minimize your issue, mount the external HDD to your Mac first, run the 1st Time Machine to create the backup, this way is faster.

After finished, unmount the external HDD, and mount it in AirPort Extreme Base Station, AirPort Utility, AirPort Disk something.

And that's it!

That's how I did it. For the past 16 months.

the guest access is a great feature and one i will use i have loads of friends who i have typed in my password for - but i wonder if they (apple) are willing to do a deal with the FON community as well? the BT homehub which is my main router (and is probably the commonest router in the UK) has this already - if activated you have a SSID of BT FON which anyone who is a member can use. By having it active on your home router you are automatically a member. you can look at some impressive maps of the UK where huge areas are covered by BT FON zones. It would be great if this was on the AEBS and TC as well.

It's possible, but it's buggy and eventually the connected drive dies. At least that's what happened to me with a brand new 1TB drive which is now unusable.

I've been using Iomega Minimax 1TB and I've placed underneath the AEBS.

Hasn't die on me yet.

But, aside of Time Machine's backup, I've backup for other things, which is running out of space.

I'm ordering another 1TB Iomega Minimax and would plugged them all together.

I rather have several HDD than one big HDD, after all, the chances of physical damage is reduced.

And if the drive doesn't die, the sparseimage file will eventually corrupt when the network connection is interrupted during a backup....then you'll lose all your information.

The Wii and DS aren't really an issue since they are used so infrequently, and as I said, I will probably hardwire the Wii anyway. But the iPhones are a problem, since they're on the network 24/7. No getting around that.

I had not even considered the idea of hanging on to my current Linksys router and using that to set up a second network for the B/G devices. I guess I will present that to the Mrs. and see if she wants to go economical or elegant. ;)

Anyone know what the new and improved Time Capsules will be going for on Amazon? I can't seem to find them.

You could always hardwire the Wii and then turn off the WiFi on your iPhones - relying on the 3G service. Just a thought...

I truly believe they'll introduce a new AppleTV.

Which makes sense, they've migrated all Intel Chipset to NVidia.

And the new NVidia ION platform would deliver more powerful graphics, then, we'll probably have 1080p without glitches.

And they'll probably give us a glimpse about Snow Leopard, and would probably announce the release by October.

Why October, trust me, it's like Leopard, strategic reason.

I am pulling my hair out not buying Blu Ray disks, waiting for a 1080p Apple TV. I love the fact that Apple TV purchases come in both HD and low res flavours (for my iPhone) and that it shows up as one file in iTunes. If I can buy 1080p like that, Blu Ray becomes obsolete.

got no idea if this has been mentioned as i haven't read any other posts.. but anyone else notice that apple is still offering both versions of the Airport Express Base Station.. aka old and new versions... that doesn't normally happen with this sort of update...?!

I have been able to do this all along. No bugs, no problems. Every hour it backs up without an issue. Has ever since I bought my AEBS. I guess I'm lucky.

I back up two laptops to it.

According to Apple " Simply register your AirPort Extreme with your MobileMe account" but I have yet to see this. Has anyone gone through this process?

We can't do it until Apple post 7.4.1, and we do not know when that will be. Hopefully tonight!

Are you sure? See below . . .

As much as i would LOVE guest networking, i don't see it happening. Apple loves making us buy new things . . .

i'm sure to the extent that instructions for making a guest network can be found in the Help section under the 5.4.1 AP Utility update and just applying the same theory that MobileMe instruction-listed buttons will become active under a 7.4.1 actual firmware update. it seems weird that it would give the instructions when i'm using a device that is then not able to do so. supporting this "Help" theory is that i can't find anything to do with dual-band in Help which makes sense given that i have an older TC model. ya know?

Not yet in stock

I went to my local Apple store this evening to exchange the Airport Extreme base station I bought last week. I was told they would swap it out for the new model at no charge. But when I got to the store, the shelves were bare. The new models hadn't yet arrived. They were hoping to have some in stock tomorrow, but I was told it might take a few days.

I wirelessly back up my MBP on my AEBS (the old one) with an external usb drive attached. In fact, it is attached via a usb hub so i can use a printer on the network too. No problems yet.

Access files on a networked drive from anywhere

Hmm. Why not on the iPhone?

Me too, My MBP (SB 2.2, 4GB RAM, 320GB 72000RPM 16MB) backing up every 1 hour to AEBS + Iomega Minimax 1TB.

HP Printer plugged via Ethernet to AEBS instead of USB. Why? Cuz, I didn't have extra USB cable and have plenty CAT-5's.

Time Machine is recognized in the Airport Utility, but Time Machine doesn't work...so...how do you get this to do backups? or was this bricked with today's update?
