dyndns

anyone know how to use dyndns with an airport extreme and USB hard drive?

Someone earlier mentioned using port forwarding and accessing the USB hard drive remotely, but that solution required a static IP.

I'm interested in this too. Since BTMM does not work for me I'm worried that the Shared Drive won't either. Can we use MobileMe as our Dynamic DNS service, or will I have to pay for something else?

Why can't you just by a AEBS and hook a 1TB drive to it? Wouldn't that be the same as having a Time Capsule - 1 TB?

I love my Apple products but the prices are a bit extreme

Airdisks & Time Machine

In response to a couple of comments regarding USB disks with the AEBS and timemachine, I've recently had no problems. Most recently partitioned a the USB disk (WD Studio Edition 1TB) for my iMac and wifeys Macbook to back up too and it has just worked.

Just followed the promts in the Airport Utility, ensured a password was present before the disks mounted on my desktop and marked the drive(s) in the startup items preference pane.

Works beautifully every single time.

Of note, I tried this back in April '08 and it really wouldn't work at all - got very frustrated and gave up. There have however been a number of softwware updates since then so perhaps the inconsistencies have been 'fixed'

I am getting bad feelings about this. If TC can be shipped in 24h why there is not firmware then?
:confused::apple:

I'm sure the new one ships with the new firmware and they just have not updated the old one yet. Maybe someone with a new one wouldn't mind posting the new firmware when they get it.

Then again I would be a little weary about installing firmware that did not come directly from Apple. I guess I should just be patient.

Didn't used to be

It was updated yesterday.

Have a look at the thread title. :D

As of yesterday on the website, there were two different airport extreme base stations, one with gigabit internet and one that wasn't but got updated.... now only one exists

But any guesses on the Airport Express?

of all the new fancy features, i'm particularly interested in the mix band thingy (laptops can use 5GHz band while iphones use 2.4GHz band, at the same time).
but is this a firmware or hardware feature? i really hope it's firmware.
any idea?

2 radios instead of 1 = hardware

Find an el-cheapo wireless-g router, and then cascade your AEBS-n into the wireless-g router. Not the same as the elegant, all-in-one that Apple provides, but still dual-band.

The only thing that I'll miss by using my AEBS-n/Linksys WRT54G in the above configuration is the guest network. I'd LOVE to have that available as I have people over pretty regularly, and there are things that I'd like them to not be able to access.

Depending on the model you have, DD-WRT is a good solution to add this functionality (plus much more) to your Linksys device. Just enable wireless isolation mode and wireless devices will only be able to see the internet.

Contact me with your model number and I will let you know. Its fairly simple to do and I should be able to walk you through it if you have a compatible device. If you can't figure it out I might be willing to do it if you send it to me.

Would i need to put the router in bridged mode. I have a wrt54g laying around that i have flashed with dd v.24 i think. Just want an idea of the settings to use my current time capsule and create a seperate b/g network. Or just run as normal and turn off DHCP and plug into a regular port on the wrt (not wan port)

The problem is you don't really want your antennas inside a metal enclosure (faraday cage), and Apple's designers seem averse to external antennas.

Yeah I can't figure out why it's so tough for the idiot designers at Apple to understand basic antenna concepts, they're not that hard. They encase everything in metal and then they bury the antennas in the worst possible places. I mean, what moron thinks its a good idea to put the antennas on the bottom of a big metal box like they did on the Mac Pro or inside the hinge of the MBP? And they couldn't come up with any worse of a design for the Base Stations, could they? I wonder why they are so intent on sacrificing wireless performance just to make the things look (in their minds but certainly not mine) so "pretty". If they could learn to strike a balance between form and function in terms of antennas, then their products would be simply awesome. As it stands now, things have gotten worse and worse with every subsequent release.

Just to let you know I got my AEBS today with the new Firmware 7.4 installed, easy to set up and the dual band works a treat. The 5Ghz is sending out about 300mbps and B&G around 59

The Mobile Me tab is there under Advanced settings, I will try it out tomorrow from another network to see how well it works. If I knew where the firmware was to upload for you all I would....

Has anyone purchased the new Time Capsule?

I'd like to hear your impressions of the revisions.

What's the data transfer speed? Does it still run hot? Is it a good value?

I just got my new TC 500GB via fedex today. I am in the process of backing up my mbp via ethernet to it. The firmware version is 7.4 in case anybody is wondering

I really hoped that Apple would add a Firewire 800 port to the Airport Extreme Base Station and the Time Capsule as well.

The AEBS would especially benefit from the doubling of data transfer speed from an attached hard drive (compared to USB 2.0). Also Firewire would allow daisy chaining of additional devices.

Maybe their strategy by withholding a Firewire 800 port is to steer customers away from an AEBS network drive solution to the substantially more expensive Time Capsule.

I really like Apple products, but sometimes Apple seems a bit chintzy when it comes to providing that extra value. Maybe they should strive please the customers as well as the shareholders.

Why would they put firewire in there? You are limited by the wireless speed. Even USB is faster than wireless N. If you are looking for speed, an AEBS backup is not the right direction. Connect directly to your computer and you don't even need the AEBS.

Firmware coming

My friend at Apple tells me that firmware 7.4 1 should be released at any moment. "it is in the pipeline" says he.

Hope it's soon. I want the dual band!

Why do people continue to associate the dual band with a software update?

Dual band = hardware. Your old AEBS/Time Capsule will not suddenly spout new dual-band hardware with the 7.4.1 update.

Re firmware coming

I spoke too soon.
I asked about dual band and he told me that was a hardware upgrade. 7.4.1 will fix TC issues and add MobileMe support only. At least that's how I read it.

I'd paste in his reply but my iPhone doesn't do that ;-|

Sorry for the false hope.
