Thanks for that link.

I feel this is one of the current largest question marks hovering over the actual buying of the watch.

It seems, after we've chatted a lot about this in recent weeks. Most people would like Apple to do the obvious:

1: Select Watch Body you want. (colour/finish)
2: Select the size you want 38mm or 42 mm.
3: Select the Watch Strap you want. (design / colour)
4: Select any accessories you want (charging docks?)
5: Go to Checkout.

That would keep everyone happy :)

We have speculated that the rubber one may be a default
Also that, with say the sports model you will have to have the rubber strap, and then you have to then pay for the extra strap, which is fine also with everyone I feel.

The Nightmare Scenario, which I know is going to REALLY annoy people is if Apple force you into buying a high end strap you don't want as they have already decided that body will come with one of these 5 straps for example.

Or worse still they have decided what strap colours go with what watch bodies also.

I don't think anyone really want to be told what they have to select from.

Fair enough, yes, offer a "suggested combination" but don't force it.

Having to buy the body, which comes with the $150 strap you don't want, so you have to then also pay for the $150 strap you do want instead I don't feel will really please anyone.

And Fingers crossed Apple does not do it.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but this is a very interesting article
That lists all of the Apple watch bands.

http://www.techradar.com/news/weara...signs-every-band-case-and-face-so-far-1283721

Judging by that article (it's not official Apple news) some straps/bands will only be exclusive to certain Apple Watches, for example the modern buckle is only available with the 38mm Apple Watch.

Apple's website has shown this since September.

I do think that option 1 would better where we can select the body, size and strap and that way the :apple: Watch will be customisable to our individual tastes and we are not paying for something we don't want.

Personally I'm torn between the :apple: Watch and the :apple: Watch sport as I've mentioned before. But either way I do want at least 2 bands, the Sport for the gym/exercising and another one for general everyday wear, and depending on price maybe another one for special occasions such as parties and social occasions. But this will depend on price, if Apple are going to charge £50 per band then I might get more but if they are going to charge £200 then I'll stick to 2 bands.

It will be impossible to force anything on anybody as the bands will surely be sold separately. So if somebody wants to put together a combination that Apple wouldn't necessarily agree with Apple won't be able to stop it. Unless you think Apple is only going to allow people to buy bands at the time they purchase the Watch? That seems unlikely considering how Apple's made a big deal about how easy it is to swap out bands.

Looking at Apple's website it seems they've covered combinations really well so I doubt many, if any, will be thinking they're forced to buy something they don't want. OK maybe there's someone out there who wants a SS watch with salmon, blue or green band but doesn't want black or white. It's possible but I would imagine it's a small number of people. Same goes for someone who wants the sport watch but would prefer one of the stainless steel or leather bands. Below are just a couple examples of combinations I doubt anyone would actually choose:

2rcuct5.jpg
2eobfa9.jpg

Do you think it makes sense for Apple to offer these combinations at time of purchase all in the name of "choice"? Of course Apple is going to steer people to what they feel are the best combinations. If someone is really upset that a combination they want doesn't exist then I guess they won't be buying a Watch. :)

Well, as I say.

All I hope is that Apple don't say:

Ok, now you have selected your chosen watch body, you can now pick from one of the following 4 strap styles we have carefully selected that go with this body.

Of course you will be able to buy additional straps, we all know that.

The question is will you be forced into having to have a strap you don't want also?

----------

I think we can expect to see some truly monstrous combinations once the cheap knock-off bands start appearing.

Well, I think you will have to agree, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

And I love this:

But there will be many who think the exact opposite.

I hope Apple makes that difficult (outside of China) and I certainly hope any 3rd party bands that Apple decides to sell in store or online will be highly curated.

Is that because you are not a good judge yourself of what matches with what, and wish Apple's help in this matter so you, yourself will then find it easier to pick a matching combination?

Well then I think you're going to be disappointed as I suspect when you choose a collection you're going to get a choice of bands that mirrors the models Apple has on its website. So if you choose a SS or Edition Watch the choice of rubber bands you get will be black and/or white. Sure beauty is in the eye of the beholder but if I put up a like/dislike poll with those 4 combinations I posted I'll bet most responses would be dislike.

It's interesting that you're now concerned about being forced to have a strap you don't want when previously you were arguing that every watch should come with a rubber band so when you sell the watch on eBay or wherever you'll have a 'default' band to include in the box. :)

----------

Is that because you are not a good judge yourself of what matches with what, and wish Apple's help in this matter so you, yourself will then find it easier to pick a matching combination?

No it's because Apple has a brand to protect and allowing anyone and everyone to sell watch bands that Apple thinks might cheapen the product does nothing for the brand. Note that 3rd party products in the Apple online and physical stores is highly curated. I expect the same will be the case with the Watch. Now if any 3rd party can easily figure out how to make a band that connects to the Watch Apple may not be able prevent those third parties from selling cheap knockoff bands. But they're certainly not going to encourage it.

EDIT: if you want another ecample, look at what Angela Ahrendts did when she came to Burberry. The famous plad check was everywhere and associated with a downmarket image. Ahrendts reduced the usage of it and took back licensing to change that image.

Oh, well, I stand by my view that is would be nice if every single watch came with the rubber strap in with the price as it would keep every model down to it's lowest price point for everyone, and be so cheap as not to add to the price for people.

THEN you could select your luxury strap, if you wish to call it that, so you get your luxury strap, but you still get your default rubber strap, colour of your choice, included with every watch.

So, as I say, when it comes to "sale time" you can sell your watch on and still keep hold of your luxury strap.

I still feel that would be a nice workable concept for everyone. :)

Likewise, I totally agree, Apple will 100% restrict what straps are on their web site. Of course they will, it's their web site :)

Also, I hope we see hundreds of 3rd party designs for customers to select from.

Also, I don't automatically label these as cheap knock off items.

It's a piece of metal with a watch strap.
It's not a nuclear powered space station they are trying to develop here!

I'm sure there will be many 3rd party straps at many price points and qualities, and it's good that customers will have the option to pick what THEY want.

If they was a Hello Kitty or Sponge Bob, or Solid Platinum band vastly higher end than anything from Apple, then it will be good if those things exist for customers to select from.

I don't know, iPhone cases for example are not nuclear powered space stations either but I have seen some unbelievably horrendous looking ones from third party companies. With absolutely rubbish quality. People buy them because.... they are cheap! To cover an expensive phone. How ironic is that!!

Well I guess it depends how much you want to spend.

If you are buying something that's going to get knocked about and ruined, then perhaps it makes sense to buy something cheap and does the job well, as opposed to something higher quality but not so good.

Take the official iPad cover, magnets, folding etc etc.
Nice quality, well made, we can argue about being overpriced :)

but totally hopeless at actually protecting the iPad very well at all.

Some cheap plastic/rubber case, may look tatty, and not well moulded, but it may do a brilliant job at protecting your iPad in a harsh environment.

You don't paint and wallpaper your home in a fancy suit, you wear some strong old jeans and a T-shirt perhaps.

In a fancy office a fancy luxury case will look the part and be perfect.

If you are throwing your iPad in the back on a van, then perhaps something thick, cheap yet very protective is better?

I'll have to see the weight of the sport vs the stainless steel, I mean it can't be that much different, I like the milanese loop but based on the fact that my primary use will be exercise/daily activities, the magnetic clasp won't do for that.

so so far I think if it is offered, I'll do a stainless steel with white sport band. If I can't do that for some reason, maybe stainless steel with milanese loop and then buy a white sport band separately.

Steel weighs almost 3x what aluminum weights per volume (specific gravity: Aluminum 2.6 vs Stainless Steel 7.8). The batt will be the 2ed heaviest part, then the screen and the S chip. So it's easy to guess the SS will weight close to or over 2x what the Sport does.

EDIT: Just for reference 18K gold is about 16.5. Making the Edition up to 6x heaver than the Sport.

To be honest with you, it have protected my iPad air just fine for over a year. And I have taken it in to some places that normally people wouldn't, in my backpack. And that's the main reason why I bought the Apple one, to protect my iPad so when I sell it, it doesn't have a single scratch or mark. And doesn't have a single one.

Perhaps we are talking about different cases, I know there are a few or two now.

I was speaking of the Smart Cover which gave zero protection to the sides or rear of the device:
http://s.cdon.com/media-dynamic/ima...d_mini_smart_cover_-_black-25526718-xtra3.jpg

I can see the Smart Case, would be much more protective and it something I'd go for so the device it protected all around:
http://i-cdn.phonearena.com/images/articles/61016-image/Apple-Smart-Case-for-iPad.jpg

Even though it does look a bit bulky in that shot, I'm sure it looks a lot better in reality.

The sport will be the cheaper one at $349 (probably £300) with the stainless steel next and then the most expensive Watch Edition, but I was at least hoping I could put a sport band on the stainless steel watch or a leather band on the sport watch, not everyone is going to want to wear the sport band all of the time.

Why would you think not?

I know Apple are over controlling, but I don't think even they would be dumb enough to stop metal/leather straps on the Aluminium watch or any combination.

Other than the size difference of the two models, I think everyone expects every strap will fit every watch, it will just be a question of what it comes with, in the basic price, and how much the higher end straps are.

Oh, and I don't think the Sports model will be £300 in the UK.

£270 - £280 feels better :)

I have the leather case (image below) not the smart cover and it doesn't seem bulky at all to me. Anyway, I don't think smart case is designed to protect your iPad as a whole. Rather just protect the screen from marks and also serve as stand (when flipped on the back) and putting the screen to sleep or waking it up as you use it.

Because of some of the comments I've seen on the forum but also because of the link I put in the first Los of this thread, it states that certain bands will only be available with certain watches. I do hope your right tho.

And I said £300 mainly because Apple tax. I wonder if the $349 for the sport is the bare minimum price and then the price increases for say the 42mm sport. i do wish Apple would hurry up and release pricing, it's one of the main things I want to know before choosing which version to get, Sport or Stainless Steel

You make a good point about pricing.

I would like to think Apple will balance out the pricing, and not punish someone for being physically larger than someone else.

In the tech world, you do that, we all pay more for a larger screen on our phone, tablet, laptop and desktop.

For Fashion/Clothing, which is where some people think Apple are trying to make inroads we are not used to that.

Will be interesting to see how they play it, as it won't cost them 1 penny to charge the same for both sizes of watch, but it may make them look good to customers who won't feel punished as the man has to pay more than his wife when they both go to get their watches.
Not his fault he's physically larger is it.

I know most people here can't get the TECH APPLE out of their mind and think of course bigger = more expensive, but again, this is supposed to be NEW APPLE, and again it won't cost them a penny to not charge by size.

Can a leopard change it's spots?
We'll soon see :)

Oh, and your query about the straps.
Yes, it is a possibility Apple do the dumb over controlling thing and say with this watch you HAVE to have one of these 4 strap we, the Apple Masters have decided you must have.
That is an unfortunate possibility.

I honestly don't thing Apple are dumb enough to do that, as it would cause backlash too much.

Either way, I'm certain you will be able to buy any strap separately, so worse case you would end up with 2 fancy straps, the one they think you should have and the one you really wanted in the 1st place.

I hope this does not happen, and you will be free to not have to select from what the recommend, but can select from any of the range of straps and pick the one you want.

Won't the leather band look strange with the aluminum watch since the band connector is polished stainless steel?
