I have a MBP and turn it on to update it, rest of the time I use my IPP 12.9 (when I am mobile). The experience of an IPP v MBP is more enjoyable to me. I like the interaction with the screen, ability to take it off the MK and do so much more, use a pen and be creative.

Don’t get me wrong - I do not only use that all day every day as to be productive I prefer more real estate and I have a 34” uhd monitor plugged into a Windows machine, I game a lot so it is my gaming rig.

A couple of months ago, I picked up a 12.9 5th gen and Magic Keyboard second hand for about half of what Apple sells it for. Since then, I’ve used my M1 MacBook Air maybe 4 times tops. I absolutely love the experience that I get using the iPad Pro. I have yet to run into anything that cannot be done on the IPP. Sure there were some workflow changes that took a while to get used to, but now I much prefer the way those tasks are accomplished on iPad OS. While it still lacks a few common sense features, I have no doubt they will be implemented in future updates.

Yesterday I decided to dust off the M1 Air and list it for sale on Swappa. Less than 24 hours later, it sold. While I have been contemplating a full jump to ipad only for some time now, I hesitated to make sure that I didn’t need the M1 Air for anything. I am finally confidant that everything I do can be accomplished on the IPP.

Has anyone else ditched their MacBook for an iPad, and if so, how has the experience been?
I used to be 100% 12.9 IPP and MK, then I got a MBP M1 and primarily use that.

Recently went in the opposite direction and love it. There’s something just so much more immersive about the iPad experience. Granted, I still do need my MacBook for certain tasks but it’s so far and few between now that it’s almost irrelevant.

That's a nice story, capathy21. I'm guessing my technological home base will always be a desktop Mac, but I couldn't be happily without an iPad for peripheral things and leisurely reading. And for people not like me, I'm happy to hear more affirmation the iPad has grown to be a capable primary "computer."

It's thirty percent of screen area. You'll notice.

Additionally, you get a full size keyboard with the 13. No shrunken keys or truncated edges.
Or 40% if going from 11" to 12.9"

I also have an 11" at my possession at the moment... and I am torn whether to keep it or to sell it. The 12.9 is great with the keyboard and all, but it doesn't fit in my shoulder bag, meaning I can't carry it around that much. Would you keep both tablets to serve different purposes?

If it were me, I'd sell the 11" and get a slightly bigger shoulder bag. It seems like that would be the cheaper option, and I can't think of any situation in which I'd prefer the 11" over the 12.9".

As for the OP's original question, I debated between upgrading my 2017 standard iPad to a 2021 standard iPad, and my 2015 13" MacBook Pro to a 2021 MacBook Air -- or replacing them both with a 2021 12.9" iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard, Apple Pencil, and Magic Mouse. I already had the mouse, so the total cost would be about the same, and then I'd only have to upgrade one device moving forward.

I have a 2019 27" iMac, which I need for my job (primarily working with Adobe CC and Office 365) and some of my hobby apps (e.g., Logic Pro), so I'd never ditch the Mac platform. For some tasks, such as editing Adobe InDesign layouts, there's no substitute for that big 5K display. My MBP, connected to an external monitor monitor, used to be my primary computer. When I got the iMac, the MBP became a backup computer, which I used when I was on the living room sofa rather than in my home office. I used my iPad every single day for watching videos while on the treadmill, checking email, reading ebooks, browsing the web, and so on.

Costco had all the iPad models (12.9" IPP, 11" IPP, iPad Air, and standard iPad) side by side on display. There was no denying that the 12.9" IPP had the best display. For something I use every day and that I keep for several years, I figured I'd get the best. I decided to go with option #2 above. It was the right choice for me. With my IPP, keyboard, and mouse, I can do almost everything I did on my MBP when I'm on the sofa, and the Pencil adds a new tool for creativity. There are a few iOS-related annoyances, such as the inability to sort Apple Mail messages alphabetically to delete blocks of messages from particular senders, so I go to my iMac for things like that. And, of course, for iPad-specific tasks, the 12.9" IPP is a joy to use. Since I work from home and don't need anything more than my iPhone when I'm out and about, the extra portability of the 11" IPP over the 12.9" is of no importance to me -- but when I do take occasional vacation trips, I don't think the 12.9" would be that much more cumbersome than the 11".

Having been spoiled by large monitors ever since I got a 21" ViewSonic MultiSync CRT in 1995, I could never be satisfied with just a 12.9" display. For the foreseeable future, then, I'll always need or want a Mac, whether it's an iMac or a MBA connected to an external display. But as a secondary-laptop replacement, the IPP/keyboard/mouse combination works just fine for me.

We went full iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard as a replacement for a MacBook and an iPad Air that had little to no usage, basically consolidating two devices into one. My SO couldn’t be happier!

After 16 months using IPP 2020 11" and Magic Keyboard only, I gave up and bought a Mac Mini M1.
It's very doable to use it exclusively as a main computer, but requires heavy adjusting, workaround, and limitation.
But then again I bought IPP because I don't want an Intel MacBook that time.
My main concern is external monitor situation and floating windows absence.

Current desktop M1 and IPP 11" for mobile is my ideal setup.
I don't worry about my MacBook battery anymore when constantly docked into my desk setup, and no longer carry the extra weight when mobile just to be able to present my presentation slides.
