Go for Canon 17-85 mm. You can save $100 buying refurbished from Adorama if they still have it. It is the best all round lens- covers wide end and telephoto. Other Canon lenses either cover just wide end or goes from medium(normal) length to telephoto.

Thanks, but that's a f4-5.6. I need f2.8 at least.

Turns out I had even LESS of a budget than I thought again (sucks how that happens sometimes). So I ended up buying the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and renting the Canon 85mm f1.8 with the eventual plan of buying it once finances start turning around.
