There are many elements that factor into pricing. Tariffs matter but so do cost of raw materials, labor efficiency, shipping costs, profit center targets, etc. To say that the price of a new phone tells us anything about the effects of tariffs is absurd.

Ummmm...

It’s not about pointing out the effects of
Tariffs or what tale that tells from the pricing. Where at any point do I claim that whatsoever? Putting words in my mouth doesnt serve as argument to counter. Just saying. I can’t respond to your post because It isn’t responding to anything I’ve stated. It’s been imagined.

It’s about the fact that there was hysteria over price hikes because of tariffs for some time now , for varying reasons from varying groups
Of people, like political reasons of course, media news cycles, genuine concern of shelling out more for products were obsessed by with as consumers, and in some cases Apple directly themselves. Apple “warned” us and yet ... it didn’t become so. I

so far not one person who has replied in this thread as I can recall has acknoweldged that simple fact and observation it’s just been total derailment and refusal to accept that simple fact. I would suspect it’s largely because of blind brand loyalty to what Apple pipes out PR reasons / strong political reasons as stated before / ego at play, but nonetheless the fact no one says ‘you
Know that is true , kinda odd ‘ is what astounds me.

I can tell ya how much I find that absolutely mind boggling (but that’s just me)

A lot of the items being sold now have been manufactured, shipped purchased etc before the tariffs went into effect. A lot of these products are stockpiled in a share house somewhere. For new items later this year we will feel the increase.

False. I’m reasonably certain they are still in China at this very moment. In complete retail packaging ready to be devoured in a warehouse in China somewhere. But I don’t think outside of Cupertino land retail units
Are sitting on US soil by the bulk. Again getting off track too. iPhones were supposed to go up in price. Didn’t happen. Won’t happen before holidays just to get everyone in festive spirit. Even if Apple considered it they’d have to eat it for shareholders. Imo

I'd be so embarrassed if I started this thread. At the end of the day, the tariffs will hit someone - it will likely be a combination of the direct consumer and Apple itself. Either way, tariffs and other forms of price controls create something called "deadweight loss". This is not a controversial idea. If you think the tariffs are a useful tool to achieve some other strategic aim then go ahead and make your own judgement on that, but to pretend it doesn't affect anything because a headline price is unchanged in advance of tariffs being in effect is idiotic.

Let's just banish this one to PRSI and move on. This thread is transparently political in nature.

I’ve stated that I suspect for some the lack of acknowledgment of basic fact that iPhones didn’t go up yesterday despite being hysterical for months over the prospect and Apple themselves
Letting us know fairly recently it was going to happen, is for political reasons, but there are others like brand loyalty and cognitive dissonance and ego, and EVEN that doesn’t count as best as I can tell

“Tariffs will hit someone”. Oh no!! Better watch out I guess!!

that sounds like Futuristic fear mongering and post-truth hysteria if ever I’ve heard it, but I wouldn’t know, not an expert on those sorts of things. Not my style.

What do you want? Do you want people who said "tariffs will immediately increase iPhone prices" to come out of the woodwork and profusely apologize to you? It's not going to happen. You know that and I know that. You're just yelling out "I told you so" to a bunch of people who were reacting to a tariff timeline that is no longer the same as when they made those predictions. Wow, congratulations - you got them.

You're also misrepresenting the situation - Apple said materially higher tariffs will affect them and consumers. The increased tariffs have continually been delayed (within the last couple hours even if you're keeping up with the news) so of course we don't know the exact outcome.

If you don't think tariffs affect prices then what's the point of tariffs? I'm not even taking a position on whether the contemplated tariffs are ultimately good or bad, I'm just saying that enacting significant changes to trade policy...changes things. Hardly controversial. If you could calm down a bit and learn about deadweight loss it would be helpful. Learning new things is good and you can both a) be educated on a subject, and b) come to a different conclusion than other people regarding it.

and no apology desired from people who were certain it would strike this release specifically just an observation that it was a common sentiment, you aren't alone in suspecting it as APPLE even said it! (and for even FURTHER clarification I'm not even singling out individual users or citing their certainty post ad nauseum, I cant bring myself to even re-read that PRSI thread I referred to but I recall it like it was just yesterday because it effectively was being just over a week ago, I've also cited USA Today where Apple said its going to happen), you’re doing that thing again where you stuff words in my mouth— just simple basic acknowledgment of the oddity of it all. By all calculations it was a certainty. And yet, here we are still paying $399 for watches and less for iPhones and same price in case of the OLED tier. And now that it isn’t so, crickets. Its like saying its absolutely going to rain and you step outside and its a beautiful day. Dress it up however you want, you said it would be one thing and the other happened. And thats fine but for people to be too shy to admit, hey that was off, is even weirder in my eyes. I'm not "implying the storytelling of pricing," or any of this junk, the rather simple fact remains "prices will go up! for sure!" and they didn't.

Should the price of Apple products increase noticeably, not just year over year Apple tax like has happened well before this fiasco, and Apple were to cite tariffs as the reason and that to be the common belief from many sources, there will be no embarrassment from my side whatsoever. What a ridiculous sentiment. I will simply acknowledge the reality as it plays out and proceed accordingly. Thats what I do. I'm not adverse to whatever happens or new information.

Tariffs didnt affect anything other than apples bottom line. Dont care about how profitable this company is to be honest. We will win the trade war with China anyways easily.

I actually do think the people who said tariffs would increase the Iphone prices should come back and apologize to him. That would be the honorable thing to do.

UK users - Ask yourself this: How come other chinese companies have the same prices in UK - US, but Apple don't?
Example oneplus. Both companies ship from China.

What pisses me off the most is that Apple gives both the US and the rest of the world the same pricing policy.

I mean, it’s not as if these iPhones go to the US first and then back again, so there shouldn’t be any need for the extra import tax right?
So why does the rest of the world need to cover up for trumps taxes, if those taxes are directed against the rest world in the first place... like wtf. That alone makes buying apple products questionable.

Or am I wrong in my assumptions here?

It’s not doom and gloom. The tariffs were delayed so any potential impact would not have been at release. As mentioned below, I suspect Apple just eats it because it’s still likely easier than making the phones here.
Apple just eats it ? You meant to say Apple has been making customers eat it for years now Same 64GB bass storage while memory prices have fallen by 50%+

I’m only stating what has been reported by analysts on the news. They said anything that was manufactured/ processed/ exported etc before the tariffs went into effect will not see a price increase... well because it was Pre-tariffs. Also read that many companies began stockpiling products to avoid passing the price increase to the customer for a short while. Anything after will have a price increase, however it’s at the company discretion such as Apple to absorb the increase or pass it down to the consumer.

I can’t see why people need more than 64 gigs. You really need to start deleting all those screenshots people

Tariffs aren't as relevant to Apple because their pricing structure is based on what the customer can bear and not what the manufacturing costs are, as is typical for other fashion brands.

If Apple calculates $1099 is their marketing sweet spot they won't add on tariffs and mess that up. (Perhaps the thread starter is also confused as to why the cost of products always coincidentally ends in a 9 too?)

As other have pointed out, you are "paying" for the tariffs by not getting 128GB as standard, not getting OLED on a $700 phone, not getting reverse wireless charging... which are now all standard features.

Apple is expecting Pros to edit multiple 4k60 video files on their new 64GB iPhones o_O

Unless they're lying, and there's no such thing as a "Pro" phone...

This thread has devolved into twilight zone quick and its not like I put a lot of effort in it with a one line post, but just raising the observation struck a nerve for many. Pardon my bafflement over the entire thing really.

Are we just supposed to ignore the “reeeeee” and “lol” in your one line post which kicked off this thread? You’re clearly trolling for a political reaction and your motives here are transparent. That’s not the tone or text of someone who is “just raising [an] observation.”

This thread is not the innocent and anodyne discussion of tariffs that you’re now claiming it is. It is PRSI fertilizer.

I have no idea what I've said that would lead you to believe that I am demanding apologies from you, sour, foaming at the mouth, or even attempting to moderate your contributions to the forum. For someone who has been complaining about others "shamelessly stuffing arguments in [their] mouth" I find this particularly ironic.

I think it's very illuminating how eager you are to make everyone else angry.

If the tariffs hit and Apple does not change the price in the US, it should lower it in Europe.

Yeah. The tariffs are the reason Apple made the standard memory lower than 128GB. The same reason they didn't put OLED in the iPhone 11. Yeah, it was the tariffs, that's it, the tariffs.;)
