Almost bought the new iMac… then came to my senses

The screen of a new big iMac is a huge and hugely interesting question mark.
I strongly suspect that it will be quite nice.
I also strongly suspect that a decently configured system in terms of RAM and storage will be outside my price range. Be that as it may, I’m not buying a new Mac until I see what Apple chooses to offer.

While I'm not a coder those other things have nothing to do with normal touch typing. Like I was saying earlier to each his own. If that's a feature some need then that's how their workflow is but I don't see the lack of it as a big issue as was described earlier by you.

No ‘inverted T’? No thanks
For some odd reason this complaint about the lack of an inverted T arrangement became internet news when Apple removed that feature on the 2016-2019 MacBooks with the butterfly keyboard. I thought Apple had committed a crime and I had never checked with competing non-Apple products until now. I just looked at Lenovo's latest Thinkpads and none of them have an inverted T arrangement. Their desktop tower keyboards came with it however. I also checked the Microsoft Surfacebooks and they don't have inverted T arrange either. Their $3500 Surface Studio comes with a keyboard with inverted T arrangement. So this feature is limited to select products. It's not a common feature amongst all computers.
I'm not at all downplaying your personal needs for one but it disturbs me how people on this Apple forums make it seem like Apple is the only company that does or doesn't do these things or making unusual decisions so they blast Apple as if this company has caused harm and major disturbance. Sometimes these types of responses towards Apple make me hate the internet, or at least hate Apple forums.

Because there is no evidence to suggest there is a larger iMac coming out in a few months. I remember being raked over the coals on here for suggesting we wouldn't get M1X/M2 Macs by February lol
There are also great material shortages and they've just started production recently, they aren't going to be ready to release these supposed Macs in a couple months. The 24 is an upsized version of the previous 21.5 that aims to capture the market of both the previous 21.5 users and some of the 27 users. Pushing the remaining 27 users into buying larger/higher end M1X computers
My MacBook 12" screen is dying and am contemplating on splurging on the new pink iMac or just Mac Mini and call it a day.
But same as you, I came into my senses amd decided that it would be wiser for me to replace the screen and wait for the M2 MacBook, hopefully come with colorful options. Oh, and get rid of that SSD swapgate.

Apologies if I've upset you - I don't want anyone to be distressed over something as minor as this. There are far more important problems in the world.
I'm not the author of the article I linked to in the previous post. It was just something I came across.
You're right, most other manufacturers don't use the inverted-T keyboard layout on their laptops. I commented on Apple keyboard layouts because that's what I use.
I'm not blasting Apple, just saying that I was disappointed that the redesigned Magic Keyboard doesn't have the inverted-T layout. I should have rephrased my initial post to avoid it being misinterpreted.
That said, I think it was an unusual decision because it's inconsistent with the keyboards on the rest of their current products: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13, MacBook Pro 16, Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, and even the Magic Keyboard case for iPad Air/Pro.

Exactly the same here - trying to decide between the new iMac, or a Mini, or to wait and see if the bigger iMac (or even a faster Mini) appear this year (and if I can afford them).
Last week the iMac was favourite, this week it’s the Mini, but since there’s a long wait for the iMac anyway, and there’s the Apple event in a few weeks, I may as well wait and carry on with my laptops.
Apple blew it a bit for me - if they’d released a bigger screen iMac I most likely would have ordered. As it is I may end up with the Mini, and save a few quid in the process.

You're really misreading what I said. Why in the world would I be upset at what you said? This is the internet. As far as I am concerned you're just a faceless person I will never meet. I was making a general statement. That's all. You took it the wrong way.

I already understood that about your needs. You said the worse thing about the new iMac was the lack of inverted T arrangement. I mentioned that people went into an uproar about it when Apple brought out the butterfly keyboard and removed the inverted T feature. I thought Apple was the only company to do this until I checked them out today. I was just mentioning what I discovered because this forum gets too emotional over Apple's decisions and then I see later that other companies do the same, but Apple gets blasted for it. Other companies get a pass for doing the same.
Once again I never accused you of blasting Apple. I made a generalized statement because you mentioned the keyboard. That's all.

Cut it out iDave. Don't let running fast, cool and quiet and looking good on the desk interfere with the wholesale knocking of whatever Apple does. As to colours, to each his own.
I mean I’ll say to you what I said to the other guy. Apple’s function is a given. Their software is great and I am totally committed to the Apple ecosystem. But again, paying these premium prices, I don’t think it’s out of the ordinary for me to care about the design. After all it is a focal part of Apple’s brand. And I don’t think any of my design critiques are even outlandish.
The iMacs had integrated power for over a decade, and then they take a step backward. Removing the logo makes the new Mac look like it came from Xiaomi.
For those who don’t know about Xiaomi… Google them along with Apple… if you think Samsung is bad about copying Apple, hold Xiaomi’s beer.
Yes the colors are subjective, but I think they’re ugly. Midnight green and product red would have been great. But couple their uninspired colors along with the white bezel, and it’s just a swing and a miss.
Of course you don't think your critiques are outlandish. That's why you stated them, but you need to open to others disagreeing with you. You created this thread because you wanted people to hear you out. You have to be just as open as you expect others here posting that disagree. Instead your posts have been combative.
Having the power supply outside the body is in fact a step forward because reduces heat. I've had 5 iMacs and every single one of them had to have a screen replacement because after several months the screen developed damaged pixels because the power supply combined with the fiery furnace of Intel's processors created too much heat in the iMac's small cavity, and the fans blew like crazy.
Well you're not alone, but you're certainly in a very small minority of people who truly care.

Ever since the iMac 2010 27" models I've been jonesing for a BLACK iMac. I'm not talking Space Gray or Black. I mean a really black Black, a Vantablack black. A black so dark that it sucks in light like a black hole. What is keeping Apple from delivering this priceless artifact to me? How much extra would it cost them to go to the Dark Side?

You need to hold out for the "Black Hole" edition and then have it signed by deGrasses.
I personally like the design, other than the omission of the Apple logo from the bezel. I would love to get the purple one, but the price for the 16/512GB model is just too high at $1899, IMO. If it had 32GB of memory for that price, I'd buy one in a heartbeat, but we all know that if Apple offers a 32 GB configuration on a future iMac, the price will be even more absurd.
I bought a Late 2014 5K iMac a few months ago for $500, and I really like it. I'm considering upgrading to a 2017 model, as this one has a Fusion drive, which I'd rather not have.

I agree with you overall, but there are a few unfortunate issues with the M1 Mac mini:
- Defaults to YPbPr when used with most monitors, no way to manually switch to RGB
- No hardware support for DDC/CI, can't use third-party apps like MonitorControl to natively control external display brightness

I don't mind the white bezels, or chin, or external power brick, as much as I dislike that keyboard layout, that's all. That's why I said it was it the worst part, for me.
I too wish to start my day greeted by the likeness of an Arthur C. Clarkeian Monolith perched menacingly on my desk. Seriously, I'd probably spring for the ludicrously priced Nano-texture glass to ensure its absolute non-reflectivity.
fellow 27” 2011 owner here. Repaired GPU, added SSD, upgraded wifi card, maxed out CPU. Unfortunately, noMetal means nothing newer than high sierra.
Similar conundrum, bought a used 2014 retina iMac and it will serve me just fine for a few years. Apple cpu and model landscape will have settled by then. More obnoxious aesthetic aspects will have also been smoothed out.
Maybe look for a clean 2015 (to get wide gamut) with an i7 and call it a day for the next few years too?
agreed about all your criticisms. Aesthetics are definitely not for me and neither is the lack of Ram. Waiting to see what the Pro will look like. Hopefully an updated version of the latest Intel iMacs, that design still looks great 9 years later.
The new iMac is hideous and it's the type of design that gets worse with time. This is a one time design, it'll get changed either in the iMac Pro 27"/32" or future designs.
But the worst part is that there is very little differentiating this iMac from a Mac mini, both have M1, and both have discrete graphics, usually the iMac's edge was a better CPU and dedicated GPU. Which is now nonexistent.
There are some niche cases where the iMac might be better, but they are niche, for the vast majority of users it seems the Mac Mini is the way to go.
With regards to design, who in their right mind can argue that large white bezels, huge chin without beautiful Apple logo, is a good idea in 2021?
And why 24"? If I want a small screen I'll stick with iPad/Macbook, 27" or 32" is the way to go.
Mac Mini wins hands down.
