Always on was decently useful for me when I didn’t have an Apple Watch. With an Apple Watch, it’s kind of redundant.

Dynamic island however has been a huge flop. Almost nothing useful about it for me.

I’m probably in the minority but the AOD is great and it’s not really about the functionality for me, more the looks
I mean Apples implementation of it is brilliant. Far better than androids clunky efforts and the way it shows like dimmed Lock Screen, even photo wallpapers etc it looks stunning. You get so bored of seeing a black oblong on your desk or chair, it’s great to see a really nice AOD!! Yes you lose some battery life, but only about 5-10% per day extra and that’s ok with me

I find the AOD display useful. I like being able to glance at my phone to check the time or see what the weather is like without having to even touch my iPhone. Dynamic island has some fun animations and is mildly useful.

Getting an iPhone 15 Pro and just wondering if these features have real world benefits or are they just a gimmick?

What apps make use of these features?
I enjoy both features on my 14 Pro. Definitely not gimmicks.

I feel like AOD is only useful/worth it if you don't have an Apple Watch.

Wearing an Apple Watch makes AOD completely redundant and, in my view, not worth the added battery drain on your phone.
Well I have an Apple Watch and the aod is far from redundant for me. I guess these features aren’t really necessary and so are quite subjective and personal whether they’re good or not

They are both huge gimmicks

Go back to the iPhone 13 Pro Max or regular 14s and you’ll find “new features” are a gimmick to get you to spend money to upgrade

I switch between a 14 pro for work and 13 mini personal and there’s absolutely nothing you’re missing out on

But I guess if you have the money why not upgrade

Useful for Apple to burn your battery faster so you need to buy a new iPhone earlier. Many people complain the battery health of iPhone 14 series.

I have an Apple Watch but I still find myself looking at the phone with AOD on.

Dynamic Island looks nice and is useful with live activities. I don’t really use the actions much because it’s not really easy to reach the top of the screen.

I don’t really like AOD. It can look nice, but I do feel like battery drains more quickly when it’s on, and it’s not really useful for me. It also makes me get sick of my wallpapers more quickly. Yes, you can turn off even wallpapers for AOD, but idk if I like that any better.

DI is very useful as an active app shortcut. Use it constantly any audio app, timers, weather, etc. now more things are going to use it with broader user base.

AoD is also very convenient. Love being able to glance at it when in a meeting.

You are stating that like it’s facts. It’s your opinion
I wasn’t hoodwinked at all. I knew about the aod before I purchased, and I still love it. I have an automation set up which rotates a new wallpaper each morning so my phone even when off looks different each day.
I would absolutely miss it if I went back to iPhone 13 so that statement is also incorrect for me. Don’t generalise and think everyone is like you.

Dynamic island is a pretty feature that really isn’t utilised by many apps yet so I’d say it this point it is something I can live without. My 13 PM doesn’t and my works 14 Pro does and to be honest it’s not a must have at this point for me.

AOD is turned off on my 14 Pro, I don’t need this feature. I wear an Apple Watch so it is redundant.

You would think that is was discuss a year ago when dynamic island was introduced on the 14 Pro series phones. Is it a gimmick? I guess but the dynamic island serves a purpose in the space that the facing camera is and does not look as bad as a hole in the screen like the other brands of smart phones.

DI is pretty cool for quick access to audio controls/timers and just looks nice overall. I turned off AoD the first day I got my 14 PM to avoid burn in.

My 13 pro has somehow managed to burn in the keyboard across its life. I decided to just not worry about it and hope for the best with the AoD. I don’t have a 14P, waiting for my 15P! :)

Burn in is also covered by warranty. I just never bothered to get mine fixed.

Is the dynamic island redundant if you have Apple Watch?

Apple gimmicks aren’t unusual. I’ve had the touch bar on two MacBooks but never used it to its potential. I prefer a row of fixed physical function keys.

No, there is no reason for the DI to be redundant due to the watch
The DI gives at a glance pop-ups, shows music playing etc not to mention “live” things like football scores
I can see why people think the always on display is made a little redundant by the watch, but not DI

They are both useful to me. I won't even purchase a phone anymore without AOD. Dynamic Island can be useful sometimes, but I can live without it.

For me, —and I’m not even exaggerating— both are amazing time savers and just fun to use. Before selling my previous iPhone I looked at the screen (off, with useless notch) and I was like, how did we live with this? Also, I think it’s funny taking screenshots showing off the island. Yes I’m immature.

Always on is fantastic and I love being able to glance over at the phone and see relevant info.

Dynamic island is a "nice to have" but honestly I wouldn't miss it if it went away.

I really like both features. Always on is probably the more useful. I have turned off raise to wake as the screen shows me what I need without lifting it or tapping the screen. I can see the email that has come in (I would actually prefer if I could turn off that the screen fully wakes up when a notification comes in to save battery life) or live activities. Two examples are having the remote BBQ thermometer, I can see the current reading without having to constantly open the app. Or Lyft, being able to see when the car is coming from the Lock Screen.

Dynamic island is good but seems like I don’t use it as much. When something is there, it seems useful. But I would not say a must have. Maybe more apps in the future. Or I use it less as I don’t multitask as much with my phone.
I’m with you. I was also a longtime Android user so AOD was a must for me, and I really don’t think I could go back to a phone without it. I’ve had no issues with it on my 14 Pro.
