I think that's a gimmick feature on a phone, the Apple Watch on the other hand...

I saw a friend wearing a Garmin watch with color e-ink which is always on and has a backlight, from what I understand, when using it. The watch display looked good from a distance when it was "inactive."

I don't see Apple going the e-ink route but there are creative solutions possible and I was really impressed with what I saw.

My Garmin Fenix 5 doesn't use e-ink but does use transflective LCD always on display which basically means you hardly ever need the backlight on as it reflects light either from natural or artificial sources without any of the disadvantages of e-ink (i.e. slow refresh times)

It's only off my wrist when I have a shower and that 10 minutes is enough to keep it charged up all the time (the stated battery life is between 8 and 11 days)

Is it technical possible to add a "always on" information on the display when upcoming iPhones are suited with an OLED display?

Always on display is pointless didnt care for it on the S8 and i thought it was distracting too. I prefer iPhones raise to wake its just far more elegant.

That might have been what I saw, then. Either way, the screen looked good in always-on mode without any/much backlighting!
