Ahh the PCI fan then! And it will not shorten its life either I presume?
I have to admit that up until I read this, I honestly thought iStats was displaying my GPU fan speed. But it's displaying the speed of the PCIe fan that sits in front if the cards and locks them in. Doh! The picture is getting clearer.

i have been using macvidcards flashed gtx 780 for a few months in slot 1 and i have not had any issues. the pcie expansion fan does rev up to 2000 rpm during startup, but comes down to 800-900rpm in a minute or so.

I've been having a ton of issues on my 2012 MP with GTX680 recently with random reboots and problems booting up in general.

See thread here:

I just moved my GTX680 to slot 2 and it seems to be ok again.

I put my Backmagic and Raid card back in and still working fine.

Will be monitoring my system like this for a bit to see if it stays that way.

Only now I've lost my USB3 and eSata card...
