So all I'll need is a HDMI cable to DVI to displayport adapter I guess.

I wonder how Apple is going to implement source switching on this new 27" imac hmm. Apple remote is probably still the same so perhaps its an autoswitched function.

Looking forward to learning more soon!
Don't get your hopes up just yet. That won't work for the same reason that the same would not work to connect an "old" MB/MBP/MBA with DVI out to the "new" Apple 24" LED display. Converting HDMI or DVI to DisplayPort requires active hardware, not just a cable.

27" includes audio in

The 27" iMac has both displayport in and audio in.

If you look at the picture above where it tells you it has a display port input it shows the audio input port (to the left of the USB ports in the photo).

Of course is would only be analogue I presume as the iMac only has stereo speakers. If you were looking to output to digital surround sound you would just put the audio straight too there from your source.

Cheers

Cave Man,

Yes you are correct - looking at the Tech Spec's

"Audio line in/optical digital audio input (minijack)"

Should have looked a bit further.

Cheers

Well whats the point of HDMI on the iMac when you could use a mac mini for a entertainment center? Just asking nicely :)

i see it that way too. not even mac mini, a $229 apple tv will do just nicely. i put all kinds of HD stuff on my apple tv (using visualhub to convert to h264 from avi, mkv, divx) and watch it on a 32 samsung hd tv. looks pretty freakin awsome. dont know why one should use a ~$1,500 computer for this. and if you just need a great monitor/tv you dont have to buy an imac for that.

This is bound to work out well.
xbox 360 can output 1080p60 via hdmi. I think that since the new iMac screen is 16/9, there will just be some minor scaling and the picture will look amazing, nixing a few hundred lines both directions. If osx runs well at 1920x1080 on the 27" the xbox should be great

Audio could be handled through an av receiver via the xbox 360 hdmi audio adapter (digital opt. -> receiver or optical in on the iMac

How are you going to convert hdmi to mdp? (Hint: Requires active converter, not a cable).

On Gizmodo they say it is "HDCP compliant so it should be fine for watching Blu-rays on, via the port, via a separate player". As far as I'm aware no Blu-Ray player currently comes with a display port out, which would suggest that it will work with hardware conversion.

Is it really that different from converting mdp to hdmi, which cables already do?

If it were that simple then why has nobody ever been able to connect a MB/MBP with DVI out to the Apple 24" LED display? Because a simple cable cannot do the job, and nobody that I know of has ever built a converter.

Can I ask why? From what I understand the digital signal sent is a series of 1s and 0s. If you are able to convert a video signal in one direction (using a relatively inexpensive cable) then surely it would be fairly straightforward to reverse the signal?

With regards why it hasn't happened yet, I don't think there was the demand for it there will be now, particularly as the old iMac was output only.

The answer is that a digital signal is not simply a digital signal, but a part of a protocol. The DisplayPort protocol allows for imbedding the HDMI stream as a part of its output, but the reverse is not true. Trying to take an HDMI stream and embed it into a more complex DisplayPort stream is not a simple process, since you would have to generate all of the other DisplayPort protocol. Here is a link to a DVI to MDP converter box, and there are probably HDMI versions available also:

Note that I know nothing about this box and so don't know if it actually works or how well it works, it is just for example purposes.

When someone gets the 27" iMac appreciate if you could give it a try to hook up a PS3 or Xbox360 to it!

If this really works, it would really imo, increase the overall user value of the iMac line. I own a white 24" iMac and its really a fantastic computer and the only issue I have with it is a lack of a clean way to use the fantastic S-IPS screen as a standalone monitor.

Several companies are work on (or have shipped already) active DVI to DP/MDP converters. These are larger, active circuitry boxes that require a separate usb or a/c adaptor, are limited to single link hdmi/dvi (1920x1200) and typically cost $100-$200. Getting from HDMI to DVI is relatively simple, so in theory, with one of these you could run a PS3 or xbox360 or other HDMI/DVI source to a 27 inch iMac.

Given that previously, the only point of such an adaptor was to use a DVI mac with a 24 inch LED cinema the market was pretty small. I would imagine that the market for people who want to use the 27 inch iMac with their older/pc hardware and consoles is much larger. The result of this will almost certainly be more, better, and cheaper options for active DVI/HDMI to DP converters. Also it looks like the entire next generation of ATi cards includes either DP or MDP so the issue of needing to connect PC/older computer hardware should go away pretty soon.

Whether any console or blu-ray manufacturers will adopt this is another story. Given the apparent demand for mac blu-ray solutions I wouldn't be surprised if someone released a compact blu-ray player with native miniDP/HDMI output.

Do you think plugging in an hdmi to MDP cable into the ps3/br player will work? 'cuz if the signal is converted to MDP you can plug in a simple MDP to MDP cable into the imac. what i know for certain is that the imac will take in a MDP signal.

What about the new hdmi to mini display port from Belkin??
I think it should work with the imac 27"!!
But whats with the Apple LED Cinema Display??
It has got also an input. It should work too??
