The question is: Should Apple be selling machines at the stock configurations they are (i.e. 512mb RAM) at a time when a lot of the software which defines the Mac - the creative software - doesn't work very well on it?
I personally think that Apple should only be selling the MB/MBP with minimum 1GB RAM, as it sounds like non-Universal apps don't run very well on anything less (all my information is anecdotal, I have not actual experience myself).
I personally think all base models should ship with 512mb-1gb of ram, and then the models up with more. The downside of shipping with more ram is the price increase, then customers complaining about "Apple is cheap and only put in two 256 sticks instead of one 512 or two 512 sticks instead of one 1024". It would also scare away some new consumers a little.
As a personal opinion Machines should be sold like this;
Mac Mini Solo & Duo, iMac 17", MacBook 1.83 should come with 512.
iMac 20", MacBook 2.0, MacBook Pro 15" 2.0 should come with 1GB.
MacBook Pro 15" 2.16, 17" and MacPro/PowerMac should come with 1 or more GB.
But complaining about the stock RAM does seem kind of stupid running a pro application. I'm not going to complain about the fact that Final Cut Studio (esp Motion and DVD Studio Pro) run much better with 2+ GB than half a GB.
