He has a point though (even if it was put quite badly).

The question is: Should Apple be selling machines at the stock configurations they are (i.e. 512mb RAM) at a time when a lot of the software which defines the Mac - the creative software - doesn't work very well on it?

I personally think that Apple should only be selling the MB/MBP with minimum 1GB RAM, as it sounds like non-Universal apps don't run very well on anything less (all my information is anecdotal, I have not actual experience myself).

I personally think all base models should ship with 512mb-1gb of ram, and then the models up with more. The downside of shipping with more ram is the price increase, then customers complaining about "Apple is cheap and only put in two 256 sticks instead of one 512 or two 512 sticks instead of one 1024". It would also scare away some new consumers a little.

As a personal opinion Machines should be sold like this;
Mac Mini Solo & Duo, iMac 17", MacBook 1.83 should come with 512.
iMac 20", MacBook 2.0, MacBook Pro 15" 2.0 should come with 1GB.
MacBook Pro 15" 2.16, 17" and MacPro/PowerMac should come with 1 or more GB.

But complaining about the stock RAM does seem kind of stupid running a pro application. I'm not going to complain about the fact that Final Cut Studio (esp Motion and DVD Studio Pro) run much better with 2+ GB than half a GB.

I do graphics work, if I open photoshop and illustrator at the same time, the first one opened will crash. Either one open on its own runs like absolute crap.

Want to use dreamweaver? OH.....well good luck.

......why sell a product if it's going to run like crap on what you've included?

Wow, Apple are now bundling Photoshop, Illy and Dreamweaver.

So the car requires 2 quarts of oil...and only comes with 0.5 quarts? It should just run like sh** until i take care of it? ...

You're foaming at the mouth a little here. Your analogy is a nonsense. If your car requires two quarts of oil and you run it with .5 quart then it won't "run like sh**", it will completely destroy the engine.

Erm, actually I love mine

I LOVE my intel imac...
I was pretty upset at the performace with 512 at the start to, but I added a GIG and it's truly the most beautiful, reliable, wonderful mac I ever had.
So, yeah, its a bummer, running apps under rosetta needs extra ram, - more than apple sell on their minimum configuration. But it's only a bummer if you don't know it.
Once you add the ram these babies FLY.

Why not just fire up Activity Monitor and see how the available ram is being used.

New to the mac plus I am at work now on my work PC. Will it show how much I "would" use? Maybe someone who has 1GB can let me know if they are using all 1gb (i.e maxed out) for quicken and/or MS office?

I love that this thread is still going on and on.....and I'm basically happy now and people are still taking offense to the original post and repeating things that were said a month ago. I was heated....but it's over.

Makes me laugh.

Anyway, things are still running much smoother. Once things are all switched over for intel this thing is going to smoke even more!

And I think i'm going to get me a mac book!
(And guess what i'm going to make sure is maxed out on it!?)

I wish they were aluminum like the 12" powerbooks... they just look nicer....

Oh and for the record. I'm not a professional graphic designer as some were saying. I have the knowlege and creativity to do things, I've done some projects in my day and i do use Adobe products on a day to day basis for various things but it's not my career. I actually run a webstore selling high end artsy/designer t-shirts with a friend of mine if anyone feels like checking it out (http://www.krudmart.com) . We've been around for about 4 years now.

No it won't read minds, but maybe it will be updated in the next release. But if you keep an eye on it as you go about your normal work you *will* get a much more accurate assessment of your pattern of usage. Even if someone had the exact same apps as you, it is unlikely they would operate the same way. Really this is one of the reasons it's there for. But having said that, if you can afford extra ram then put it in because you can never have to much ram installed. Btw widgets can eat up a lot of ram.
