The current interface is pretty bad. I also see where it's maybe being done to look more like the IOS interface, but it just doesn't fit in here. Maybe its in anticipation of the touch screen TV that's rumored. All I know is that this was a big step backwards.

Yep. The biggest misconception is that they don't listen, but if you look at keynotes where they talk about customer feedback, you'll see they do listen.

Not to mention I have a friend at Apple who said that he 100% assures me they listen. (He's at Apple corporate, I can't go into detail for his sake but everyone has seen is work).

Call him up and ask him why the new UI is so bad , what was the reason for this

If you have a small HDTV I could see how it's easier, but on a 55" it looks ridiculous. ...BUT, give me a Hulu app and I'll gladly choke down any interface they want.

On my 60" the icons look like houses there so big

I have a difficult time differentiating which app is highlights with the thin blue line around it.

RE the new interface: not liking it either.

I set my iTunes Store location in the ATV to Romania even though I'm in the US. That eliminates everything except Computers and Settings in the top row, plus a couple in the lower rows. (Sadly not MLB -- which incidentally is not available in Romania).

I only use the ATV to watch my own content and i hate scrolling by that Movies, TV Shows, Music/get iCloud advertising on my way to selecting my computer. Not helpful if you use Netflix or buy Apple content, but if you use yours like I do maybe this will help you out.

I doubt he even knows who the UI designers are. They're very secretive at Apple. It took me 2 years just to get him to tell me what he did there, and even then he didn't give me his job title he just showed me an example of his work and told not to tell anyone it was his work.

Not keen on it, it's way too Toytown for me. I particularly dislike the border that shows which icon is selected as it's too thin to spot easily (particularly with me being colour-blind) - I can often find it only by clicking around and watching for movement.

One of the (if not the) weakest UI from Apple in a long time.

I agree. I think I prefer the previous UI for the main screen better. But I do like the new iTunes look though.

I'm not color blind, but I have a hard time seeing the highlighted icons as well.

Agree here as well- very preSchool.

How is it users seem to hate this new interface 100% and the folks at Apple do not?

The previous UI was very elegant and clean.
Nothing wrong with it.

He reminds me of tommy from the tv show martin lol

I was FURIOUS when I did the update and saw the new GUI. Giant icons are SOOOOO 1998.
But perhaps there are plans to marry the TV with the iPad as a remote? It had better be.

New Apple TV UI is hideous

I am afraid I must join in with the chorus of disapprovals for the new UI on the Apple TV. It is what I call a Fisher Price interface. Big blocky child like icons cluttering the screen. The icons are poorly designed and do not reflect the Apple ethos in any way. Simplicity.

Ditto the previous comment re: not being able to tell which icon is selected.

The problem with the new UI mimicking the iOS Home screen is that on iOS you interact directly with the content; you press the icon you want with your finger, but on Apple TV the difficulty arises when the really colourful icons detract from the highlight around the currently selected menu item. You can't at a glance distinguish the blue highlight from a blue icon so it takes longer to calculate which arrows you need to press to get to where you want.

Icons devoid of colour with a sleek but prominent highlight, i.e. yellow around grey, are the best way to go on devices you don't interact with directly.

The selected icon could be in full colour and the others could be monochrome. The problem with that is that many of the icons are trademarked branding and often companies get really anal about even using a slightly different shade of colour, never mind removing it entirely.

I think there is alot of valid feedback here that Apple can not really ignore about this latest UI.

My first experience with the latest Apple TV:

The first time I witnessed this the new UI in person was at an apple store one evening. I instinctively put my finger to the screen to touch one of those big icons. I quickly realized that it was not a touch screen tv and felt pretty stupid.

It's actually making news now-
I sent Apple an email via the hardware feedback section on their site.

If you hate the new UI...ask them to simply switch it back.
I did.

Good luck to us!

There is no touchscreen TV (what a ridiculous notion!) that's rumored. But I agree: just like Lion, the new ATV UI is an esthetic and functional step backwards. Sadly, as the months and years of the post-Steve era pass by, the Apple stuff we have will steadily diverge from the Apple stuff we liked. His ethos is gone, and Apple's feel is now in the hands of an operations guy. When Jony Ive leaves, it'll all be over.
