The idea of a tray seems so antique to me. Slot loading is great. I have never needed to use a Mini Disc.

That's what I love so much about Mac laptops, there is no connections/buttons that stick out. Therefore not likely to cause damage.

Like the Apple site says:

Durable Space-Age Construction
The iBook was designed with durability in mind, using ultratough polycarbonate plastic — the same material used in bulletproof glass — with an internal magnesium frame for added strength. The hard disk drive is rubber-mounted for impact resistance. And there are no doors or protruding elements that can accidentally get triggered, break off or snag on clothing.

but dont forget that newer is not always better.

But that being said for laptop I like the slot load design because it one less thing that can be broken off. But for desktops I like the tray loaded drives over slot loaded because the likely hood of the drive getting hit while it is open is quite a bit smaller and the advatages of the tray loaded start out waying the draw backs. and the draw backs become quite a bit less.

The slot loaded loses most of its adavatages when moved to the desktop side (being hit and broken while open and the buttin to open it should not be a problem at all)

the reason I prefer slot loading drives is the fear of the tray snapping in conventional dirives.

the only downside of slot-loading drives is it's lack of versatility. i can't put mini-disks or other shapes inside of it.

the fact that the slot-loading drives dosen't snap, outweighs it's versatility problem, so i perfer it.

This is also why no one but me, I SAY NO ONE BUT ME (not even bill gates) may touch my 360, since it is 100% useless if the drive breaks off. worried...:(
