While I love his design too, it has been done: http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/24/emblazes-first-else-unveiled-in-london-promises-to-be-a-game-c/

Yeah it's pretty genius. Thinking outside the box is what we're use to expecting from Apple, and are a bit let down by the lack of creativity with the iPad UI.

He based his UI off of the way we would hold the device:

Which results in this kind of homescreen:

And his lock screen is just gorgeous:

It's clear this guy was thinking the primary orientation would be landscape over portrait.

Personally, with something as big as the iPad, I don't think I want to manipulate it mainly with my thumb. I'd rather use my index finger. Actually, I don't even use my thumb that much on the iPhone/touch. I think its about 50/50 between my index finger and my thumb.

ANyone want to wager the difference visually between 3.2 and 4.0?
I'd imagine there will be a fair bit.

Wow so the OP started a thread talking about how gross and tasteless the iPad is based on a picture of something that is not the iPad.

How peculiar.

Read the thread, it's stated the screenshot is from the iPad Simulator from the SDK. And he's referring to the UI, not the hardware.

Me too... I think the most common thing will be to hold it around the bezel with my left hand, and use my index finger on my right hand to touch things. My thumbs are too clunky to do anything very detailed.

There's also something to be said for using a UI that is evolutionary - one that people "get" right away. The best UI is one that has the smallest learning curve. There are probably a thousand ways one could design the interface, and many of them would be pretty slick. I'm satisfied with the way they did it. Could it be improved a bit? sure... I assume the iPhone OS will continue to evolve.

There's nothing to prevent someone from developing an app that has a UI similar to what the OP posted. I'd be curious to try it out.
