I just don't get all this optimization talk. 99% of all apps I've installed work perfectly fine and fast on my S4.

Any app that had problems or simply wasn't compatible are few and far between, and most that didn't work were games from big companies like EA or Disney.

Android will probably never match Apple's ability to optimize it's OS with its Apps.

I don't necessarily agree with this because Windows is similar to Android in this respect. It's performance is on par or greater than equivalent Macs that share similar optimization capability as iOS due to fixed hardware. Particularly with GPU's the drivers are more optimized on windows, you wouldn't think optimization and hardware freedom would go together, but GPU's on windows are a perfect example.

From what I've read, Dalvik virtual machine is the main issue. Apparently, android chose that route with hardware compatibility in mind - so you're right.

However, I can't help but think this issue will be solved with time. Or another more open ended OS will step up to the plate with equal performance to iOS (with respect to prioritizing the UI thread like iOS - which is iOS' main advantage).

Windows is not comparable to any other mobile operating systems it is the least dynamic. There's nothing to it. If doesn't have 1/2 the functionality of an iPhone. Easy to be fluid when you have not features or options. Basically you can move tiles around and resize them, thats really it.

was talking about regular windows, not windows mobile/rt

It's sad how many people get caught up on benchmarks. Benchmarks don't tell the story a phone delivers on a day to day basis. Android will probably never match Apple's ability to optimize it's OS with its Apps.

Can you please define outdated? Software optimization is a constant issue with Android because all of the manufacturers who have their hands in the pot. Doesn't matter what Android you have, none will compare smoothness of the iPhone.

Outdated as in the 5S SMOKES the S4 with "lesser" hardware. And it's only been 6 months. I'm talking by a few points, I'm talking huge numbers. Plus the app quality is certainly better on iOS.

Personally, I'm finding the app quality not up to par on Android. Alot of apps are downright missing features that iOS has had for a while. And with all the app updates, they still haven't added the features. I'm convinced that alot of these app are simply "ports" and basic features to use the app at that. Twitter STILL doesn't have a tablet version of their app.

My Nike app doesn't have Path integration. My Facebook app doesn't have filters (I like my filters, hush it). Tumblr doesn't allow for uploading multiple photos as a photoset. Flickr doesn't have automatic upload. Snapseed (a Google brand) won't accept S4's photos and resizes them down to 3MP (but it will accept 8MP). Dropbox doesn't allow me to select multiple files and move them. And what's becoming the biggest deal breaker as time goes on without a fix - Instagram flatout doesn't work as it over compresses the photos which look very pixelated. Just to name a few, not including "apps" that are half-assed and supposedly coming soon (1Password, Everpix, Day One, VSCOCam, Mailbox).

Add to that: Google STILL doesn't offer a cloud backup option for the phone the way that iOS has iCloud (pretty much all I use iCloud for).
