Off topic: Unfortunately atv is a piece of **** for playing movies: poor support for differend formats. Once you try to play mkv files without exactly format for atv you get troubles. I wouldnt spend any real money to this carbage.

It's kinda ridiculous to rage out about their support of a popular piracy format. If you're ripping your own digital copies, MP4 works just fine. and it's also great for Netflix and iTunes Store. Plus you can AirPlay from any other Apple device. Heck you can AirPlay vlc from your computer and watch pretty much whatever format.

Anyway, there are plenty of options out there between chromecasts and rokus and whatever else. By all means get the one that suits your needs best, its just silly to say something is objectively crap because it doesn't suit your specific usage needs.

Totally and any MKV files can be changed to MP4 files in 5 minutes with no loss of quality (doesn't re-encode) using Subler. People would rather rage than spend 10 minutes researching a topic.

what piracy? mkv is just a container. i have ripped my movies straight to mkv's without changing their formats and not going to convert them just because atv cannot play them without a specific format. i prefer to use devices that can do what i want them to do and work fine with all platforms and support multiple formats rather than only couple.

yes there are many other and cheaper options than crippled atv (no dts for example)i use android tv box, and can use playstore and apps i have already bought once, airplay/mirroring all my devices (osx/win or android/ios) and streaming straight from the nas for example. it also support bt keyboard and mouse, if using skype on it etc.

just saying that if you own ios, it doesnt meant that you need to buy another expensive device from apple which will cause gray hairs immediately when you are doing alittle bit more than just using "apple services"...

thats cool. i'm not into buying disks and ripping them into a digital collection. Netflix and iTunes rentals have been plenty for me. and the airplay capabilities have worked better for me than the other solutions i'd tried in the past. i don't doubt different people will find stuff that has the best fit for them, its just a little much to throw the whole "enjoy your crippled crap" at anyone who arrived at a different best fit than you.

If you're in the UK and have a Sky HD box then you can use the Sky app to show your iPhone pics on your TV. Fairly sure there is a way of doing it with Chromecast as well, probably an app that does it or just upload them to Google Drive and have them show.

And don't forget there is iCloud Photo Library which shows all your iPhone photos on the Apple TV via the cloud.

same on the shi**y HDMI Lightning Adapter. I don't know how to show friends vacation pictures and videos.
they switched to android and don't have ATVs. DLNA Apps are sadly a pain on iOS.

So I just returned from a trip and wanted to show the pictures from iphone and Canon DSLR on TV. DSLR has wifi. Found out Samsung TV supports DLNA and camera supports DLNA and was able to show pictures from DSLR straight on TV. For iphone, I downloaded the Samsung Smart View app and was able to use the app to show pictures and video on TV. Seemed pretty easy-peasy to me.

I know exactly what it is, and what it capable of without the dim-witted comments here from those that can't grasp the concept of sarcasm in places. Just seems unbelievable that in this day and age that there's no simple way to view photos or movies from an iPhone to a TV.
It's because there aren't many open standards for everybody to adopt and do this universally. Apple is pushing AirPlay and I read somewhere recently that some newer Samsung TV's work with it out of the box.

Apple TV: Yes, I should go buy another £150 box to replace a USB cable.

And how many HDMI ports do you think the average TV has, and now one more just to view the odd photo or video on a larger screen?
[doublepost=1465030328][/doublepost]

Are they any good? I've had HDMI adapters before that were not so good between devices (not apple). It's a 55" TV, small problem show up for cheaper HDMI interfaces.

You can buy a brand new Apple TV 3rd Gen for $69 and it will let you wirelessly show anything on your iPhone... no cables necessary. You hit one button and it works... doesn't get much easier than that. And you get the added benefit of all the other millions of things that you can also exploit through AirPlay. I do all this with the Apple TV 2nd Gen, which I'm sure you can find for even less. You are complaining about ease of use and USB cables not working, and there is a very simple solution to your problem that is Apple's solution.

you still need to connect your atv to the tv with a hdmi cable althought you can wirelessly stream from your iphone. i quess the original point was that there are no extra hdmi ports available which obviously atv needs. so.. if you dont have available hdmi ports you also need a splitter.

This is really up to the TV manufacture. Apple gives access of all media to any app that request it with the users permission. Samsung makes an app to do this with their TVs but it's really ******... There is nothing that Apple can do about this. Samsung just needs to make a better app... I'm sure it's the same with all TV manufacturers.

there are lot of things apple could do, but they dont - for example dlna. luckily you can have 3rd apps to round it. i wouldnt blame other manufacturers when apple wants to do things on apple way rather than supporting others and making it easier for consumers.

Easier is not the issue. Better is the issue. Apple is better. To hell with ease and convenience. The Earth remains without you or I. The sooner young people learn that the better. I guess your parents failed teaching you the truly important things!

The app is pretty good, I use it to show my photos on my Samsung tv.
