The iPhone touchscreen interface is great for the iPhone.

But that doesn't mean that Apple wouldn't tweak the touchscreen interface for an iPod. I mean you have an entire hi-res screen at your disposal. You don't think Apple would come up with something that is simultaneously efficient, elegant, and eye-candy drool worthy? I bet on yes.

Having a full screen touch UI also gives you MANY extra options for navigation. For example, on the now playing screen you could have a couple of extra buttons to view lyrics, add to playlist, etc. You could also create and edit named playlists right on the iPod, instead of only the on-the-go playlist. (these are just some random ideas off the top of my head.)

The click wheel is great, but a fullscreen touch interface can offer a richer UI as well as bigger videos and photos. It's only a matter of time before Apple goes that route IMO.

September 5th..... Mark your calendars! :D:D:D

For real. The major stores in Sweden are pretty dry as well, all stores have barely any iPods in stock. Some of them have even during this week discontiuned the 80GB iPod. The 5th September rumor seem extremly plausable.

Maybe slightly off topic, but...
Ever tried scrolling through 1400 artists/ 10000 songs with front row; now THAT'S a damn slow method that i'd generally advise against.

Now that's no kidding, brother. I only occasionally use Front Row, but our Apple TV, used every day, is about the same and it's almost like playing a video game, learning to time letting off the remote's scroll button for the list to slow down and stop whirling by about where you wish.

I do so like the click wheel with letter-skipping feature.

September 5th..... Mark your calendars! :D:D:D

And place your orders. I'm in on the 6G full-sized iPod no matter what the features. I'm still not sold on replacing the click wheel for large capacity iPods but I'm certainly willing enough to try getting accustomed to what they do with the touch interface on iPod, certainly willing enough to immediately buy one. I only hope they keep the "chromed" case backs that can be laser engraved, as I've taken to having my iPods engraved and enjoy that personalization, as I don't resell them.

Love to spend some money on a new iPod order come 5th September. The date sounds right for a good lead in to the holiday season for a big product that has seen only a very minor update in two years; I doubt Apple wants their iPod customer base, which is many times the iPhone base, to feel as if they've been tossed over for the new kid on the block. The nano promotion doesn't end until 16th September; but if they announce and ship full-sized iPods, the ones not in the promotion, on the 5th, but announce on the 5th yet do not ship new nanos until after the 16th of the month I don't see any conflict with their current promotional program. It certainly won't kill off the back-to-school Mac sales, as the current generation nano included is *free*, the promotion *is* ending, and if you want one of the new nanos instead you can just have two at no extra cost, perhaps give the older model away as a gift, or even sell it.

But with the deal you could also pay the difference and get the 5.5 so in some ways this would interfere with the deal. Also i don't see them announcing anything without shipping it right away as in that day. Didn't matter for the Apple TV or iPhone because there weren't any older products of theirs that they would want to cell off before it came out.

Oh you just go ahead and shatter my dreams. Thanks a lot. Good points, though. And barring Apple TV and iPhone, which were rather uniquely for Apple pre-announced far in advance, they really are going for an "available now" approach to their product announcements, especially for consumer electronics products like iPods. So you do make some excellent points. I just have the new toy itch; but of course Apple will revise the iPods sometime before the holidays if not in a couple weeks, and likely if not surely it'll be a significant revision this time around, I'll buy one, I'll expect to be happy as I've been with all my iPods, and the world will continue to turn on its axis, even if I have to wait a couple months rather than a couple weeks.

(I have ulterior motives, too. A new iPod which I want and "need" as much as anyone needs something like that will stop me from buying an iPhone, which I just flat don't need but have been itching to buy. I know, I know: work on that self-discipline.)

Same thing in Tokyo, Japan

I was looking for an iPod video, but big electronic shops chain Bic Camera dont even sell them anymore.
cant wait for the new iPod video to come.
cheers

Play.com is out of stock on 30gb versions

Play.com is out of stock of 30gb versions but has 80gb versions in stock, but has both with 17 or 21% discount, don't know if this improves chances of an update but thought i'd add it to the discussion.
