a better place
Too much $$$ off contract that it misses what made Kindle tablets appealing... The price.

I'd rather have 2 nexus 5's ....

Smartphones are nothing but gimmicks, doesn't matter who the manufacture is.

Not at all. They are lifestyle products, or at least they should be.

Yes, companies do go off into gimmick land for marketing reasons, like Samsungs whole waving your hand over the screen routine, but S Health and heart monitor are lifestyle enhancers in the way I use them.

Same for Siri.

Amazon Announces the Fire Phone

Yes, but for $650 do you really want it?

I will preorder it and use it side by side and then make my decision :). Oddly enough I use amazon multiple times a day haha. I believe in them and their products. If I decide to keep it, it will really only cost be about $100 after I sell my current phone. My prime membership is due soon too ;)

Can't hurt to try it. It really is the only new innovation phones have seen in years IMO.

Don't see anything amazing over a Galaxy S5/HTC M8/LG G3. Except it has the added con of lesser amount of android apps compared to google play. Plus some of the better indie devs are probably going to code for the galaxy owners they can reach worldwide than this US only thing.

Doesn't do anything for me personally but honestly, didn't expect it too. Amazon isn't targeting tech enthusiasts with their tablets and aren't with this phone either. I can see this phone appealing to anyone who might find the Fire tablets useful, or lives heavily in the Amazon ecosystem, more so than just shopping, but that's really about it. And considering their tablet market share has reportedly been dropping like a stone, I don't see these taking off either.

Price offers no advantage over competition and unless you're Apple, carrier exclusives are just barriers to success.

and it is DOA for that sole reason. People do not want contracts anymore or to pay what will probably be $600 out right. One carrier is a big mistake.

Edit: looks like you can get it on next

This is simply not true. The vast majority of people would happily sign a contract to get a cheaper phone.

The carriers are pushing this new pricing scheme on the customer, not the other way around.

Next is nothing but a gimmick. Sure, it's "no contract" but you're still paying for the phone if you decide to leave AT&T which is just the same as an ETF to most people.

Very surprised by the high price. Kindle Fires are somewhat appealing because of their lower price points. This comes in at most other high-end devices prices. The os is very different than real android. I don't get it?

If you really want this phone, wait a while. Soon, they'll be big discounts and or bundles.

I question whether the 4, front facing, infrared cameras for the 3D/eye-detection is really necessary. One decent front facing camera for video calls is enough for me.

I do like the fact that they have a rubber casing with protection in mind.

I know. If you are prime member than consider it $100 off.

Still thinking of it as a $550 with almost one year old processor is crazy.

I see amazon dropping price from $650 to $550 within 60 days if this thing doesn't sell well.

I like Amazon as I use their site when I need to buy inexpensive micro-sd cards. I like Amazon more than Apple, Samsung, Facebook, and Microsoft.

But the price is a turn off and so is being trapped completely into their ecosystem. Amazon needs to use a near stock Android and lower the price.

If other companies want to win a price war esp in the US, they need to offer their flagships for FREE with contract right out of the gate.

Because $199 with contract (with another $100 for taxes/activation fees) getting a new iPhone sounds better than getting a $350 Nexus 5 or OnePlus One. Americans need a contract/data plan anyway and net on their phone almost everywhere. US isn't like a developing country that generally lives on prepaid or always searching for a FREE Wi-Fi hotspot. They don't want to pay higher than the upfront cost. Unlocked phones is mostly for international travelers or phone enthusiasts. And peoplle sell off their old iPhones to $300-$400 to pay off the newer phone.

Amazon and OnePlus still don't get it yet with American consumers.

3d looks awesome, don't think though it is very practical yet.
Not a win for Amazon this time, but who knows what we gonna say in couple of years.
Anyway - competition is good thing.

Depends on your lifestyle. Not even needs Internet and apps.

I was hoping for Amazon to revolutionize pricing for smartphones much like how they have done with the tablet market, but no. At this price, I fail to see why anyone will choose this over the iPhone, HTC One M8, or the much cheaper Nexus 5 and OnePlus One. Add in the carrier exclusive part and this thing is pretty much Dead on Arrival :(

Woeful presentation.

I feel sorry or rather embarrassed for them more than anything. They expect applause and it simply isn't there, or it's just 2 guys.. And his mum. :p

I live heavily in the Amazon ecosystem (Kindle ebooks, Amazon Instant Video, Amazon MP3) and have been on Prime since 2005 or 2006 (can't remember exactly) and I still think Amazon priced themselves out of the market with this phone. They needed to be closer to Nexus pricing rather than iPhone and other flagships.

Anyone who has used a Kindle Fire device knows how horrendous their software is. It's seriously the most outdated, clunky piece of crap out there right now. I feel extremely bad for the sucker who wastes $750 on this piece of junk

There are some really cool features and it's a good starting point, but Amazon messed up a bit.

Price, networks, software and frankly it's just a bit gimmicky.

But give them 2 years, I reckon they could do OK. There are some really clever features included.
