Again, this is a fantastic deal and part of me really wants to pick one up. But with 13- and 11-inch M2 iPad Airs, and a Gen 7 iPad Mini in addition to my M2 Max Mac Studio, I don’t know when I’d use a MacBook Air.

EDIT: I’m fascinated by the downvote I received from @holmesf. Does the responder disagree with me about whether I could find a use for the MacBook Air given my other gear? Perhaps the disagreement is with the expression of my desire to pick one up? Or perhaps my statement that this is a fantastic deal? Or didn’t the responder read or understand my post? Truly, I am fascinated… please explain! 🤣
I'm guessing he didn't like you talking about how much stuff you had. Or maybe he had trouble with the part about you paying extra for the fancy Mac Studio (instead of the more affordable Mac mini) but not being able to see how a portable Mac would be a helpful tool, especially since you have found a use for 3 iPads.

Not so crazy when you consider how profitable Apple is as a company. People are obviously willing to pay these prices, which make a significant contribution to Apple’s margins while letting them maintain reasonable entry-level pricing. You’ll see the same strategy if you price out a top-end Porsche or Mercedes. They really sting you on the options/upgrades!
Exactly! Apple probably doesn't make what they'd like in terms of margins on base machines, the only reason they're priced that low is because us upgraders subsidize the base models. This makes Apple look a bit greedy on the surface, but it's a great strategy for increasing their user base.

Would everyone be happy with higher base specs and $100 upgrades on RAM and storage if the base price of the machine was $300+ more to make up for it? Probably not.

Consider the base macbook air i got in 2012 for $1200. Thats $1650 in today's money with inflation, today's base macs are a steal in comparison

These discounts are great if the base specs work for you, but if you need more ram or storage, you're out of luck - no discount for you.

Amazon UK price = £999 or £832 minus the 20% VAT which equates to approx $1076 US (or about $1290 with VAT inc).

Amazon US price is $750 + 10% sales Tax = $825 approx (£637).

Imagine getting the MBA M2 with 16 GB Ram in the UK for £637 right now, absolute killer deal and they would sell out fast.

I think Apple's future focus/strategy might be on increasing hardware volumes by retaining/lowering prices and then making up for it by selling additional services or products at much higher margins.

Maybe a June release of M5? The M4 will turn 1-year-old in May 2025. Guessing iPads might skip this one since they just got the M4 and those usually go closer to two years before a refresh. MacBook Air is overdue for a new chip. I can't find any recent news on it, but N3P was supposed to go into high-volume mass production in the second half of this year. It seems like there's potential for a May or June M5.
I'm just saying this is extremely unlikely so it would be unwise to make a decision based on that thought. Usually a product release is preceded by months of rumors and leaks, and none is currently putting M5 on the roadmap. M4 Macbook Air is rumored to be released in spring, so it is extremely unlikely they will be refreshing the Air to M5 any time soon. Apple often skips generation on the iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Studio, Mac Pro but less likely on the Air and Pro because those are much more popular models. Just like they would skip a chip for an iPad but not on the iPhone.

It's so unfortunate that Apple kept 8GB/128GB for a decade. I'm sitting here on my 2012 MBP looking for potential upgrades, and so many discounted models still have 8GB/128GB. So it's nice to finally see one with 16GB/256GB. It's a tempting offer, would be better if it was M3 with 512GB. The M5 version is might be coming in the Spring. I was planning to wait for the Spring, but I wasn't planning on a such a well-discounted model with RAM and SSD specs that are actually an upgrade for someone still on a twelve-year-old laptop.

It's crazy that upgrading from 256GB to 512GB is 200$ when a full 1TB of premium m.2 is 85$ at retail pricing, to upgrade to the 2TB model of the same stick (SN850X), it's an extra 61$. Apple charges over 6 times that for their 1TB->2TB upgrade (400$).
I don't think Apple's stingy RAM and SSD choices are the issue. Just pull the trigger on a new machine, you'll be so much more satisfied than with a 2012 MBP. Apple is still a hardware company. After you buy from them you don't have to spend another penny for years if you don't want to. If they sold SSD upgrades at retail prices they'd have far less resources to develop these stellar products. You might also consider an eBay refurbished Air or Pro with a 1-year warranty if you really want a discount on a larger SSD model. I was looking at an M2 Air in 'excellent' condition with 24GB RAM and a 512GB SSD for about $1000 but this Amazon deal looks even better.

Amazon today introduced a new price drop on the M2 MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM, specifically for the 13-inch model with 256GB of storage. You can get this computer for $749.99 in two colors, down from $999.00.

This deal beats the previous low price by about $50, and it requires you to clip an on-page coupon in order to see the final sale price. Amazon has the MacBook Air in Space Gray and Midnight at this price, and right now they're the only retailer offering it.

Note: You won't see the deal price until checkout.

13-inch M2 MacBook Air (16GB/256GB) for $749.99 ($249 OFF)

Apple updated the MacBook Air lineup last week to start with 16GB of RAM, up from 8GB, and otherwise there have been no changes to the computer.

Base M2 Air 16gb / 256 is $1000 here in Japan.

15 inch M2 Air 16fb 512 is $1400.

I’m feeling the love, TBH.

Worse is that against salary, the price has increased 50 percent in five years.

Japanese median salaries have decreased from $60,000 to around $38,000 Against the USD since 2015.

Yeah, they are probably wanting to release new processors in MacBook Pro models before bringing them to the cheaper MacBook Airs to encourage people to purchase the more-expensive models. Maybe we'll get the M4 Air in March like last time. Maybe June at-earliest for M5 MacBook Pro. And perhaps M5 MacBook Air sometime after the 2025 back-to-school sales end.

Sales tax is charged by the state. In some areas such as Oregon you will not be charged sales tax. In some areas the tax is almost 10%.
it's interesting to see how in America one has to calculate what their final price is. For us Europeans often final prices are quote, except shipping maybe. Or when you have a business account or a site selling specifically for businesses the VAT/sales tax is excluded.

It reminds me of paying the bills at the an eating place, somehow they (american friends) also calculate how much tip they have to add on after the bills has arrived. Which for someone who is used to 'final prices' feels like dishonest pricing. But that's just my own conditioning.

So as a non-american seeing the apple website prices, can be easily misunderstood.

It doesn't matter if they are "new", its a 2 year old model that stores and apple are trying to get rid off to make room for M4 models.
I question that. Looking at the last year they have been introducing 'cheapest' MacBooks to places like Walmart. Although older model, but definitely not left over stock.

It's also maybe a new distribution / promotion strategy they apply, so they can supply 'least specced' MacBooks for promotional purposes for other retailers that wished to attract buyers (like amazon, Walmart, Costco, best buy). That avoids their 'normal' 16GB range for being dropped in pricing too quickly. In this way they can sell higher volumes to hopefully a group of buyers that would normally not consider a MacBook due to price. It would not be good if their own Mac users start buying lower cost models which would hurt their sales. Seemingly the Walmart deal previously worked out fine with the m1/8GB/256gb model, and they might continue with the M2 version.

With apple silicon they really have gold in their hands with regards to the below $900 laptop category. As long as intel/amd can't product long lasting and powerful laptops at that price, Apple might become dominant in this category of around $700.

i don't need it as my use cases are heavy and loaded PC with mbp 16 32gig memory but you know this is going to be an excellent device for light to med user. Should be fantastic for class as well. What a time to live in.

This is going to be such a great update for my wife, considering her old laptop is broken and its an Intel... I didn't think about it, I just bought it.

Gotta add the coupon. Got one today on this deal, thanks for pointing it out.

i cannot stand my surface book any more. Bought for $100 when my company closed. But it was ALWAYS slow. Even out of the box.

you are in for a treat, the system is very zippy. Apple Intelligence works really well on all Apple Silicon hardware.
