I don’t know if it is applicable to you but try to play with internet checkout page on apple.

For us in midwest, store pickup is a physical sale thus sales tax is greater percentage, versus ordering the same thing to be shipped.
Looks to be the same price here either way.

I would be ashamed to sell a modern powerful (CPU wise as these are) computer with 256GB of SSD. Even 16GB of RAM is almost a joke.

Obviously I would never buy one if I had the money.

Disgusting.
RAM I agree, SSD it depends ....

Right. However, people keep buying so Apple doesn't feel the need to make 16gb the default.

Why make 16gb the default when they can charge an additional $200 for it?
If AI is going to take up more RAM, the default will have to be 16GB. All the new Windows Snapdragon computers are going with a base config of 16GB of RAM now. Apple could be snarky and set the base config to 12GB since Macs don't compare to Windows machines according to the people at Apple.

AI will take more RAM to run the models and the data the models need to work on and all the plumbing/data sharing among the apps to create the context.

Buying an 8GB Device now is a sure regret

At the same time, however, we shall see exponential growth in the TPU (or NPU, whatever you want to call it) performance in the next couple of years so maybe the current ones (including M4) will be holding us back.

TBH when it gets to a desktop/laptop, I think it better wait for M5 (or get something second-hand now and then replace it).

We are really at a junction now, AI will trigger Upgrades, good for Apple in the next couple of years.

I agree with him, not gonna buy an 8 GB RAM Apple device anymore, that is not enough, think of AI as well.

Yeah, but that's not what he's saying. He won't buy *any* Mac until 16GB is the base.

I agree with you - I won't buy an 8GB machine these days (or even 16GB), but what Apple sells on the low end is of no concern to me.

The higher-end model that you forked out additional dollars for should have been probably the "low-end" model to begin with.
