Those of you who have played Penumbra before will surely be interested in the next game being released by developer Frictional Games in just 2 days. For those of you who haven't heard of the Penumbra series - they're the best survival horror games I've ever played :)

Just wanted to bring some attention to Frictional's latest and greatest game, so leave your thoughts here and help spread the word :D

http://store.steampowered.com/app/57300/

And, if you're interested in that sort of stuff, they have an interesting blog about Amnesia's development, game development in general, and musings over gaming with respect to other forms of media.

I downloaded the demo and played it for awhile. Maybe it's just me, but the graphics seem a little weak.

It's an indy game, lower your expectations a little. IGN already gave it a great review. Can't wait for it!

I recently picked up the Penumbra collection, and started playing Overture, and I've got to admit- the game-play is addicting, a great way to distract yourself a few hours each day. The graphics aren't bad, they totally work with the dark environments.

If Amnesia is anything like Penumbra, I'll be picking it up for sure, from the screen shots, it looks graphically better, which I think will help with immersion.

If you haven't tried Penumbra, I recommend giving it a shot. The puzzles you solve involve "the environment" that you interact with in 3D (real 3d, not pseudo "Myst" 3D.)

Survival horror fan? Check out Amnesia: Dark Descent

Hey everyone. This one came in under the radar on Steam. Starting tomorrow you can purchase Amnesia: Dark Descent from a couple of digital distribution sites (steam, gamersgate). I played the mac demo on Steam. It looks like it has a lot of potential. This is a game you MUST play in the dark with the sound turned up. You'll love it if you're a fan of adventure/horror games. I didn't see any big announcements, but definitely try the demo if you're in the mood for a little scare as Halloween approaches.

I just played it for the past two hours in the dark and oh boy, this game is good. Killer atmosphere, genuinely scary, more polished than the penumbra games. I recommend.

Penumbra has just been released on Steam for Mac :)

Hmm, hasn't appeared on my Mac Games list, but it does say it's a SteamPlay title on the store...

It would be great if I could play it in OS X because I never finished Requiem...

Black Plague and Requiem haven't appeared on my Mac Games list yet either, although Overture appeared about a week ago (I was able to download / play it), and I don't think that was supposed to happen. I expect the rest will be there soon.

I had just completed before few days ago on my mac...By using of a fully simulated physical world, advanced 3D graphics and dynamic sound system, the game pulls no movement when you try to dive. Once the game starts, you will be in control from start to finish. There are no cut scenes or jumps in time, whatever happens will happen first hand.

DL'd the game last night and so far it is well worth the $20 bucks. But I have had to do a couple loads of laundry to clean my pants...

THIS. I just about crapped my pants several times and I'm afraid (almost literally) that I'm not even halfway through it. This is definitely the scariest game I've played.

I've had Penumbra on the Windows side for a few months but hadn't gotten around to even beating the first one. Now that it's out for Mac though I know where I'm gonna be...

... hiding under the covers....

i watched a couple videos of the game on youtube then bought it but my screen is waaay darker than any of theirs. ive turned my brightness up to max but i still cant see anything, even when i light candles or use my lantern everything is still way to dark. does anyone know how to fix this?

I got it when it was released. Scariest game since I first played Doom 3 when that was first released.

Seriously, there is not much killing, the plot get's a little silly, but it's a great game.

You DON'T fix it. It's the point of the game.
I find you can see OK if you're in complete darkness, at least you can see ~5m. If you're in the light, you can't see things in the dark, as you would expect. Be careful lighting everything you see, because then there's no dark nooks to hide in.

I agree it's an amazing game. I wouldn't recommend people play it at night with the lights off in a countryside empty house though, unless you want no sleep ever again.

No but mine is abnormally dark, i can light a candle and if i take 3 steps away ill be in complete darkness again. Ive watched many videos on youtube and mine looks nothing like theirs.

1) Fix the gamma. When you open the game for the first time, it asks you to set the gamma, with 2 squares. You're supposed to be able to see one, but not the other.
2) Have you tried walking out into the complete dark? The game is supposed to be dark. If you set the gamma correctly, you should be able to see a few metres in the pitch dark, when there are NO LIGHT SOURCES AROUND. If there are light sources around, you can't see in the dark. Like in real life.
3) Stop watching youtube videos of this game. This game is not like other games where you're supposed to see the monsters. You're supposed to be walking almost blind through the dark, following walls. The monsters glow a little in the dark anyway, making them easy to avoid. The YouTube videos probably have the gamma turned right down to make everything easy to see, or it could be a product of the flash video encoding. It ruins the experience.
4) Forget about trying to stay "sane". Being insane makes the game more fun, and it's easier to get past monsters in the dark.

ive tried every gamma setting possible. I understand im suppose to be in the dark but theres never any moments when its the least bit bright, i always need a candle or lantern just to walk in a straight line let alone to find hidden items.

Hidden items glow too.

The last thing I can suggest is to go into your "System Preferences", "Displays", and click the "Colour" tab. Either make sure it's not set to some random colour profile, or make your own.

If it's not an in-game gamma problem, a display calibration problem, or you just having the display brightness down too low, then I expect it's either a flash video encoding problem with youtube, or just a problem with your expectations.

I'm interested to know how old you are.

Just a head's up, this is on sale right not for $6.80. So if you were on the fence about buying it, it's a good time to do so!
