Is there any way to contact Apple for an official response on this? And would it improve performance in Snow Leopard?

The only thing stopping me from trying to load a later MP's EFI firmware is concern it may "break" its compatibility with future software updates.

And if it is as simple as all the other firmware updates they have released, and they just did one for the MBP HDD, why won't they do one for our EFI?

Thanks netkas, once SL is out I'll give it a try.

I know I'm dreaming, but I'm really hoping that apple does the right thing by us 1,1 owners.

You and me both mate.

I'm glad to see this thread is generating some interest, even if only to educate me a bit on what is/isn't required for SL and what will/won't work.

I honestly can't see Apple updating our MP 1,1 to EFI 64 (can you?) but as long as they allow SL to run with a 64bit kernel I'll be happy (oh and if EVGA get an EFI 32 compatible GTX285, which they promised me they were looking into)

Cheers all

Yeah, I'll bet they know HOW....there just isn't a reason to do it. Planned Obsolescence.....why else label the 4870 as "EFI-64 Only" when in fact it is Universal (EBC)? (I'll bet they were FURIOUS with ATI....how DARE they include our Ancient 2006/07 Machines?!?!?!?! )

They REALLY want you to buy a new one. An update for our 2 year old firmware isn't gonna sell anything but a few GTX285 and Quadro FX5600 cards.

Very true, I just can't understand where Apple is coming from with this.

With the Mac Pro Apple has (finally?) given us a Mac that remains powerful for a long time. In the past when I've bought one of their "pro" machines it hasn't been too long before their consumer machines have caught up and/or overtaken it and it makes sense to sell up and buy one.

That's probably why I've alternated between pro level machines and consumer level machines until now. This MP 1,1 (quad 2.66) is STILL way more powerful than I really need and the iMac still hasn't caught up to it in terms of raw horsepower. Negating the need for me to sell up and consider a new computer just yet. But I would like access to improved graphics cards, and I'd like to know that this Mac Pro that I paid quite a lot of money for (including a 23" and 30" Apple monitors) is going to be actively supported with things like firmware updates etc.

Apple has been banging on and on about how "green" they are nowadays. Well, prove it Apple, give my Mac Pro 1,1 an EFI64 update and let me use for a few years more instead of trying to force me to discard it and upgrade.

[EDIT] If any of this doesn't make sense I apologise, I'm on nights and I've just got up lol[/EDIT]

Ok, I tried to stay out of this one, but.................

There are EFI FirmWare Updates listed on Apple's site.

And Even A Boot CD to RECOVER FROM A BAD FLASH.

So, if you really want to try this go to Firmware Restoration CD

GET THE CORRECT CD FOR YOUR MAC. BURN IT.

MAKE SURE IT WORKS

MAKE SURE IT WORKS

Then find the EFI FIRMWARE UPDATE for your Mac and the 64bit EFI Update that you think is close to your Hardware.

Figure out what the update app that runs in OS X and the one that Does the Flashing in EFI are LOOKING for The FirmWare and HardWare to Match.

Once you Have Hacked the Updater for you Machine to take the NEW 64bit Update, FLASH IT.

GET OUT YOUR RECOVERY CD.

1. REBOOT TO YOUR USELESS MAC.(99% Chance)

2. REBOOT TO YOUR 64BiT MAC(1% Chance)

I won't go into how to Edit/Hack the Firmware update to Flash your Mac with a 64Bit firmware, because if you can't figure that part out yourself, it's not something YOU need to be Doing, but it CAN BE DONE.

I will give a Hint:Hexedit

DISCLAIMER: ALL OF THE ABOVE IS NOT ENDORSED OR RECOMMENDED BY ME, OR ANYONE, IF YOU SHOULD FIGURE IT OUT, AND BE BRAVE, STUPID, CRAZY ENOUGH TO TRY IT.

YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE TO BLAME IF IT BURNS YOU HOUSE DOWN, KNOCKS UP YOUR DOG, KILLS YOUR MAC, ETC>ETC>ECT.

STAY AWAY FROM APPLE FIRMWARE RESET CD's BRING IT TO APPLE SO THEY GIVE U A NEW COMPUTER WHEN THE **** DIDN'T WORK.

My insurance payed my logic board. Selfrisk was 150€ total cost >800€

MacPro1,1 2.0GHz And my problems where not due to hacking firmware.

Why do you want K64, or 64 bit EFI so badly anyway? Seems like injectors or card flashing is a much safer, sounder way to get what you want out of this.

How much ROM space is available and would be needed?

64-bit code generally consumes more space than 32-bit code.
