Has anyone seen Tie-a-Tie Deluxe? It just posted to the App Store. They actually charge $1.99 to diagram how you tie a tie! C'mon, Apple! If it was free, maaaaaaaybe... But charging a couple bucks has definitely earned it "crap app" status...

while it probably don't think it will make a difference in this particular instance, I don't think it's fair to call an app crap if you haven't bought/tried it yourself.

All of the other "crap apps" listed on my site we have downloaded and tried (except for IAmRich, of course :)). This one wouldn't have gotten Crap App status if it were free. But, c'mon... there are much more useful apps out there that don't cost anything. Charging $1.99 for this just seems like (to me) the developer was trying to think of an easy way to make a buck. I could be wrong (certainly wouldn't be the first time :)) but it just seems like this should be free if it's on there at all.

To be fair, he dedicated time effort and possibly money into the project.

All I'm saying is that maybe it's the best damn tie-tying application in the world -- but you haven't actually tried it. Like I said, I'm pretty sure that it's not likely to make a difference in this particular instance, but just saying. I've been surprised in both directions after buying an app (much better or much worse then I expected).

Problem is though that people aren't being content with just not buying such applications but rather leaving negative reviews without even trying the application.

that problem lies with apple and apple alone. apple should only allow purchasers of said app(s) to leave reviews (i'm assuming we are talking about reviews on iTunes that is). if this happened, then the reviews would actually hold some meaning.

again, vote/speak/protest/support with your dollar. you're in control.

Why are you being so negative about someone who worked to make money?

So, I should have paid $999.99 in order to post my thoughts on IAmRich? :)

I hear what you're saying, though, and the authors on my site do buy/download all of the apps we review (and the Crap Apps, too). But when my beef is with the fact that they're charging a couple of bucks for the app in the first place, I don't feel it's necessary in this case to actually buy the app. It may very well be the best damn how-to-tie-a-tie app in the world. But unless it ties the tie for me, it's not worth my money when if you google "how to tie a tie" you get a plethora of sites (with diagrams and video) that show the same thing... for free.

Now, not everyone is going to agree with every app we designate as a Crap App, and that's fine. One man's trash is another man's treasure. But it doesn't mean we can't post our thoughts on it.

And why are you being so negative about someone who worked hard to put together a free information site on the App Strore? :)

Not all of my posts contain links to material on my site... unless you're talking about my signature, then I'm guilty as charged (and so are a lot of other people). This post does have a link, however, because it was relevant to the material being discussed.

actually....yes.

my belief on this whole thing is this:

if you purchased the app off iTunes, you should be allowed to leave a review on iTunes. if you did not purchase the app off iTunes, you should NOT be able to leave a review on iTunes.

if you want to DISCUSS an app, then any message board/forum can be used to do that...discuss.

but actual product reviews should be for the people who purchased the product. this way you're getting genuine input on the product itself (positve or negative). i think it's very unfair for people to vote 1-star with a negative review on iTunes when they didn't even buy it.

Because your are a hypocrite for criticizing the developer for an app you haven't tried, while you are trying to get traffic for ad revenue about your website that is suppose to "review" apps.

Not even including your sig, your posts have links to articles to your website.

I 110% agree with you on that. It hurts the integrity of the entire "overall rating" on iTunes when people start doing that. I have never, and would never, post a review on iTunes (or anywhere else) without first downloading and fully exploring the app. But I'm not reviewing the tie app, here. Just posting my thoughts on it for a discussion.

well, you sorta did review it by saying it's "crap app status". without purchasing it, you wouldn't know if it was crap. who knows....it could have a hidden feature that cooks you pancakes too...but you have to buy it to find out.

MR is a great place to discuss these apps as they pop up, but maybe hold out on the labeling unless you did drop some coin on it.

i still love ya though!

Completely agree.

Just checking out both Tie apps, deluxe $1.99 and standard $0.99, they both seem decent apps. I notice that the author has added bow ties which most find difficult to tie. Might be worth it for some.

If an app has any "hidden features" that significantly impacts perception of its value, and the developer fails to make note of such features in the app description, thus resulting in the app being perceived as "crap," well, the developer has nobody to blame but himself!

But as someone else has pointed out above, the same information can be found for free on the internet by googling! If these apps have any other features that make them worth more than such free info, the developer has failed to make me aware of them in his app description. So I'm not going to drop him a dollar in the hopes that I'll find a "hidden feature" that makes the app worth the dollar. Why should I? It's the responsibility of the developers to give a product description that sell their product to the consumer!

I don't care what status it has on your site. You already gave it that so we don't need you to come here and constantly bring up your site. Your only gripe is that it should be free. There are a million people that think all apps should be free. What makes you any different and why should we care?

I just don't think we need a thread for every crap app. Most people are intelligent enough to figure it out on their own, why make crap threads for crap apps?

But as someone else has pointed out above, the same information can be found for free on the internet by googling!

If thats your criteria for charging for something then a lot of apps shouldn't charge. But I don't think that's a worthwhile criteria. There is a lot of stuff available for free on the internet that I would love for someone to put into an iPhone program that I would happily pay for.

I don't think anyone here should be harping on something just because the customer base is small or the product only focuses on a niche. You're not forced to buy these apps, so why all the hate? Someone out there might want to remember how to tie or a bow-tie and be at a wedding with their iPod Touch. That app would be useful for them.

Just like it was silly for the people who don't fly to complain about the price of the app for pilots, its silly for people who don't want to tie a tie to complain of the price for a bow-tie app. There are always alternatives. Just like you can find it for free on the internet, you can grow your own vegetables, build your own car, write your own OS. If someone wants to spend $.99 rather than working on finding that info later when they really need it, let them be.

Free Enterprise is still in existence. Since the negative comments are so easy to make, why don't YOU learn to code and post a FREE tie tying App. Otherwise, why do you bash something that you haven't bought, OR given an educated evaluation of what was so easy about coding an equivalent App.
