Erm, you missed the point. I was saying that iMessage sends over data, but if none is available it will send over SMS.

This is a telco issue and not an Apple or iMessage issue.

C'mon, don't split hairs. "Free" in this context, as you know, means no additional cost for anyone who pays for a data plan - and who has an iPhone without that?

What's the point being made here?

Again, what's the point being made here? It has literally no influence on how good, bad or otherwise iMessage is.
Erm your missing the point iMessage is simply not a one stop solution and is not as practical or reliable for many as you may think

It starts of with the E part only being available to a faction and goes down hill from there

As I noted for some in US or AUS and a few other locals it fairs better than elsewhere, but that's about it

Please don’t put words in my mouth. Clarifying some points about what iMessage is and does in no way means I’m saying it’s practical for everyone. It’s a very good service with very clear benefits over standard SMS, that’s all I’ve really said.

I'm so glad no one in my contacts is so pretentious to care whether their bubbles are blue or green. I don't even like RCS/iMessage because I don't need typing indicators and NEVER do group chats. I just want the simplicity of AOL Instant Messenger--simple sending a text, wait for a reply, and have it in a conversational view. Optional emojis. That's it. I don't need to know if the other person 'saw' my message or is 'typing'. In fact, I've had more misunderstandings from the bugs present in modern messaging. I'd see my girlfriend 'typing' for example, but she said nothing, and I'd assume she's ignoring me, or many times my message never got 'seen' and I didn't know if it made it to her phone or not.

Life is so much easier and less stressful on my 2011 smartphone. I type a message, hit send, and it says 'sent successfully' and that's all it has to be. Eventually a tone goes off and the response is on my lockscreen ready to view/respond to. Why complicate that? Plus, I don't need a stable data connection to use SMS, just bars. 90% of places I go I have no data and only one bar. Try using iMessage on that!

Another benefit is a basic SMS app doesn't depend on updates. It just works.
You're left out of 100% iMessage group chats that you don't know you're not in ;)

It's built on a technology, a framework, decades old by now. It's good for the time, and the restrictions. That it works at all is a wonder.

I HATE group chats. I used to be added to them on old Facebook and hated every minute of it. I never understood the purpose of group chats. All I do most of the time is text my girlfriend. Using SMS is like the old IM days, where all you needed was a conversation view, and sending messages back and forth.

I don't need typing indicators, little games, or 'reactions' or *shudder* animoji/memoji. I send a message, wait for a response, rinse, repeat. Couldn't be more simple than that.

When I still used an iPhone 6S, I couldn't see anything that was broken on SMS that wasn't on iMessage. The message bubbles were a different color but videos, photos, and the like I sent appeared to be unmolested and she never complained about the quality. Even the little iMessage apps menu appeared to work (sending photos, YouTube videos, GIFs, etc.)

Group chats are fine and better than texting each person individually about the same thing. It's got a purpose, you just don't like change and you are likely in the very minority on what you don't like about new tech.
I mean geez, you keep repeating the same things over and over.... For a few years now lol.

Why the heck are you texting your girlfriend? That is modern witchcraft. You should be calling her on your phone.

Oh it sure didn't take long before the horse and carriage meme resurfaced again. Gee like I don't hear that one each day!

gotta say the foldables are pretty convincing, they just look cool
They do, definitely.
But I start to question their practicality. Nowadays, I've seen more and more people using these foldables in the wild, especially the Z-Flip. Most of them keep it open all the time so they can immediately use the phone without the extra step of unfolding it. Kinda defeats the point imo, might as well just get a regular slab form factor.

So although they are cool, they harkens back to the usage style of feature phone, where you are not on your phone all the time, only occasionally for calls/text. Then it makes sense. For the rest of use who are on our phones all the time, the slab form factor is more ideal.

As for the Z-Fold, I have not seen too many of them in the wild. The Fold has the advantage of the screen on the outside so the phone is still usable as a smartphone while folded, but I'm guessing not many people are too fond of the very tall aspect ratio.

oh for sure, the flip is boring. I like the fold, but I think the aspect ratio is ugly on the front screen.

The idea is what I'm behind, I just hope the technology can improve and the folds don't fall out of fashion before then.

The only reason why I'd consider getting Android is the phone design. It's more innovative and better than what Apple puts out.
This is coming from someone who's been Android user since well, HTC Desire HD. That's 2010.
Apple iOS has become so good in the past few years that I'm almost switching to Apple. The reason being is that Apple lives on hardware, Google lives on ads.
But I really like the hardware design of Android phones, like what Samsung puts out with curved displays, etc.

iMessage I never got the hype. When I had my iPhone 12 Pro Max last year, I didn't see what was so special about it. Seemed no different then Google Messages and not as good as Telegram.

But then again my circle of family, friends, and coworkers, is probably 70% Android / 30% iPhone users.

So much happier on my Pixel 6 Pro and stock Android.

Fold user here. And yeah, I agree there’s not too many in the wild… living in the states, there’s more iPhone users. When people do see my Fold, the first reaction is… “oh that’s the new foldable phone, cool… I never seen it before.”

But I’m not your typical Fold user… I use a sleeve with my Fold and primarily interact with the inner screen, I rarely use the outside screen due to the aspect ratio.

I’d say if you’re just getting to iMessage now then yeah, it won’t be as impressive. I don’t know about GM but the big difference over telegram is that if you don’t have internet, your message will still be sent as standard SMS, whereas telegram won’t send it until there’s a connection

I actually dislike that curved display. I will not get another.
