Distimo claims that Google Market has now eclipsed the App Store in terms of the number of free apps it offers - 134,342 versus 121,845.

It adds, “If all application stores maintain their current growth pace, approximately five months from now Google Android Market will be the largest store in terms of number of applications followed by the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad, Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, BlackBerry App World and Nokia Ovi Store.”

Hardly surpassing since Apple bleeds it's developers dry of cash. I'd sooner develop for Android rather than iOS.

I think apple's inconsistent approval process and high fees will come back to haunt them. It seems that developers who see an economic advantage to head over to the android marketplace have done just that.

Apple should be less greedy and more developer friendly to avoid alienating more developers

Apple has paid developer over two billion dollars. How much has Google paid them?

http://www.9to5mac.com/64091/android-has-more-freebies-as-apple-makes-big-bucks-from-3x-paid-apps/

That's why developer will keep developing for iOS first

I didn't say apple is not paying developers. I said that apple needs to being so greedy.

You're missing the point on gross dollars paid out vs. percentage that apple keeps whether its subscriptions, in app purchases and regular app purchases. Google AFAIK takes a smaller cut in some of these areas.

I am sorry but you can't be more wrong.

RIM mobile software department makes more money than Android
Nokia mobile software department makes more money than Android

Google only offers paid Android apps in few countries

As those fools who say Apple is greedy to charge 30%, guess what Android charges? 30%.

but you miss other crap like forcing subscription fees to be yank out of Apples. Google does not require that they route threw the Google store and thus take a much smaller cut.

Google's App store gives devs a lot more options. Apple App store gives very few opition

Even if they were credible arguments, what does that say about developers? They're all beginning to dislike Apple all of a sudden?

There is a reason behind the fall in new apps and devs. Trying to prove that everyone else is just like Apple isn't proving anything.

What I think is funny is the title of this thread. In the first line of the quote, the word "Claims" is used. Heck if a certain forum user was to post such a thing, they would be railed up and down the forum.

Could this also be, that no one is buying apps on the Android market place? I am sure it is out there, the number of paid apps purchased etc.

I can already see where this thread is going.

I don't think these numbers show what you think they show. They give absolutely no indication that developers are choosing Android over iOS.

But more new apps are coming out for Android right? So I guess the Android developers are just working overtime?

I think it is funny watching that the argument of most apple is gone so now the fanboys are having to come up with new reasons.

Android is easier to develop on in terms of cost. You are not required to buy a Mac to develop on for it but instead install the SDK on any computer.

Android charges or Google charges? You have the 2 confused methinks.
You could always develop, market and sell your application outside of the market if the 30% cut concerns you. Gameloft do just that.

HAHAHAHA. Economic advantage? You clearly have NO idea what you're talking about.

Math's not your strong suit, eh? 100% of nothing is still nothing.

But more new apps are coming out for Android right? So I guess the Android developers are just working overtime?

Or, the "so obvious that I'm worried about those of you that didn't see it right off the bat" answer: Android allows every piece of software submitted onto it's store. It has no approval process. The fact that it took this long to equal the App Store is, frankly, embarrassing.

With the number of Android phones out there no one should be surprised that Google's AppStore will take over Apple's AppStore.

Additionally, the Android SDK is more accessible. You can develop using operating systems other than OSX.

Developers aren't going to sit there and watch - they will develop for a popular platform.

This is the major reason why we're seeing an influx of android apps. Given the market share of android, a developer would be a fool to ignore such a large potential customer base.

How many soundboards, wallpapers, and theme apps do we really need? Android market may have more free apps, but it also has a much higher percentage of ****** apps that don't do anything worthwhile, or well.

Except for the fact that the number of Android developers is decreasing. But other than that, cool analysis.

Numbers dont matter. Its the number of quality apps that matter. As a previous iPhone user and current Android user, the Android Market is filled with trash (So is iPhone, but iPhone has many more quality apps)

Gimme WP7 market over Android even.

The benefit of Android's Market is the easy approval for rooted apps.

The iOS app store has its share of crap apps as well.

yep that is a huge reasons as well. I plan to start trying to play around with the SDK the summer for android and will upload random stuff I make to my phone just to play with it.
Going for the iPhone well. My old macbook is well old and lacks any of my developer tools/software on it and I have no real motivation to do it for equipment that sadly sits around most of the time now days.

My desktop is 6.5 old desktop only got stuff installed on it this semester because I needed a 32 bit OS write and test some assembly code. That is the only reason it even got turned on and I finally got around to reformatting it. My main work horse now days is my i7 dell laptop I have had for just under a year now. Now the laptop is loaded with all my dev tools and been set up to do 99% of my work.

Add to that I do not have to pay $99 bucks a year to install software on my own device is a huge bonus. I believe to be able to upload stuff to the android market cost like $25 bucks a year but that is still less than Apple and only required if I want to put it in the market. For just personal stuff well do not have to deal with it.

That is an entirely different topic. And you clearly have no idea what you are on about. I honestly think the iOS App Store has more crap in it (like fart apps and flashlight apps and etc) than the Android Market.

I own an iPhone 4 btw. I'm not trolling Apple, I like my iPhone. Just speaking my opinion, which is based on what I've seen in reality, unlike yours, which is just fabrications you assumed.

The fact that it took this long to equal the App Store is, frankly, embarrassing.
The fact that OS X has no where near the available Apps as Windows does after over 10 years is, frankly, embarrassing.

Here in New Zealand an iPhone costs $1300, and the cheapest Android Samsung phone costs $300. Which is more attractive for most people?

Plus you can get a Samsung Galaxy S2 here for $1200, and IMO its better than the current gen iPhone, and I'll probably be getting one instead of an iPhone 4 or 5.
