It's exactly what they want now, yes, but once something new becomes the thing to have, it won't be.

Apple gear has been "the thing to have" since 2001. Now you're talking "one day there'll be something better." Maybe yes, maybe no. Rather useless to discuss that, though. If you want to push that idea further, though, it looks like they have the industry locked up for the next few years at least.

The PPC Macintosh systems were holding Apple back, so it hasn't been since 2001.

Exactly, while 2001 with the introduction of the first iPod was clearly put apple on the road to success, their gear was not the thing to have in 2001. It's been a long and largely successful process, but they weren't on top in 2001, they were just climbing up from the bottom.

You need to step out the bath tub. Apple sells allot of product, but PCs rule the world. There are 6 billion people on the planet. How many own Apple products?

Yep, hundreds of millions of boxes running some version Windows. The good old standby for MS.

EXACTLY Micro-idea's problem.

The thing is it's not always about dominance. Congrats to android but there are still way more iOS users out there and iPhone users are very loyal.

People get it twisted by thinking just because someone has more market share or outsells something that it instantly means it's better and that's not always the case.

For example Sure Chevy Outsells Bentley and BMW but people love their luxury cars and will continue to buy them. But does that mean chevy is better because it's more dominant? No it doesnt.

You said Apple's gear has been the thing to get since 2001. Prove it then.

Your name changing tactics (i.e. Microsoft -> Micro-idea) are counterproductive.

iPhone users are very loyal.

Not in my experience. I was a 3GS owner in the UK. I could have gone for an iPhone 4 now I've moved to LA. I have not. I have a Droid X, I LOVE it! Of my colleagues with iPhones, ,one is about to see his contract end and is getting a Droid X to replace it. One has a work iPhone which has been an utter nightmare upgrading to iOS4 and he is not getting one when his personal contract expires, he's droiding. One got an iP4...and he keeps grabbing my Droid to play with it. He's the only iPhone owner I know personally who has or intends to stay on the iOS platform. Everyone else has either had it with iOS, had it with AT&T, had it with the hardware, or had it with Steve's closed architecture.

And to add to the above post: I'm not staying with iPhone either. It's good, but not THAT good.

When my contract expires in 14 months :)(), I'll probably get a good HTC mobile running Android OS at the end of 2011. It's a long way off, but I want.....more.

It's up to 100,000 Android activations a day now. Massively impressive stuff.

Try 200,000 :

http://www.androidcentral.com/google-ceo-says-200000-android-devices-activated-every-day

100,000 was back in May. Since then, Samsung shipped the Galaxy S worldwide, HTC the Evo 4G and Verizon the Droid X.

Not to mention all the other low-end handsets that have seen the light of day.

If you need to put it into perspective, this is about 18,000,000 phones per quarter and puts them ahead of Apple.

Perhaps but in my case, I'm not choosing my phone (or computers) based on loyalty or how I like/idolize a given company but rather choose the best tool to solve my needs.

Being a former 3Gs iPhone owner, I can say that the 3Gs is an excellent phone, and iOS is a great OS. However I found the android platform to be superior to meeting my needs. The cost and commitment required for these devices is such that I think buying a phone just because it has the apple logo or the google logo on the back is a mistake.

I would love to see what innovative phones are coming out of Canada. With out MS Canada would shut down. After all the entire population is less than California.

I am not implying that numbers mean better. Look at the populations of the major tech buying nations and then talk about Apple's numbers. 300,00 million US, 500 million EU for starters.

Exactly. I own my devices they don't own me. And i've tried android a few times i had the G1 when it launched but for me it didn't meet my needs so i stuck with my iPhone. I've tryed the Droid and the Captivate and while they do offer some great things.

It doesn't have what i'm looking for but i would be a fool to just pick something like you mentioned based on a logo. I'm a geek by nature i suppose but i don't care to have access to change every single thing on my phone.

But im glad that there is another platform for people to choose though. :D

Why can't all of these threads mentioning iOS and Android be friendly like this??

This is the result of being #1 in any market

Just ask GM and Toyota what being #1 in a market is like. It's not easy in any market when everyone is gunning at your back. The iPhone is good, but Android is good as well and it offers carrier choice. I know some people love being told AT&T ONLY, but I don't.

The mobile phone Google Android tsunami is finally hitting the shore. Apple will always be a niche player in mobile. It's their closed and restricted nature. And it's Apple's choice.

The best Apple can hope for is to continue to be seen as a premium product, even after the antenna issues, and take in huge profits.

In this very specific market the MS/Apple analogy on a broad scale is apt. There are many specific differences but the end result is likely to be the same.

It's interesting that people/columnists are picking up on the fact that history is repeating itself.

Back in the day, apple ruled the computer industry, they had a tightly controlled proprietary computer. It was the cool thing to have, kids, parents, schools, etc. It was a great computer. IBM (and then the clones) came with a more open solution. Open in the sense that you could add anything, you had lots of choices in hardware and software. Not too soon afterwards, PCs were outselling Apple II/III computers and then of course the Macintoshs.

Google chose a business model that fits with its strategy, and gets multiple handsets on multiple carriers thus increasing its ad revenue and such. similarly to how MS started. Licensing (not selling) DOS to IBM, then to other computer makers.

Does this spell doom for apple, of course not, if they continue to innovate and make cool products they'll have a place in the mobile market. They just won't have the #1 spot. They also need to be careful how they treat developers because with android moving more phones, developers will want a piece of that action as well. They best not alienate the developers.

As sorry as I feel for you Americans, it's pretty tiring to see every topic about other phones turning into a debate about why AT&T is worse than their rivals in the USA.

Fact is, there's a whole world out there. I can go to my local Apple Store and buy my iPhone unlocked and choose any carrier I want. Five carriers sell iPhone directly to customers in my country.

The stats in the BBC article are about the "worldwide" smartphone market. Please stop using AT&T as an 'excuse' for Apple because it simply doesn't matter to most of us.
