Yep, the original idea was to do a camera OS, but interest was too low.
So a few months later they switched to doing a smartphone OS, and within a year they were bought by Google for $50 million.
At that same moment in mid 2005 when they were bought, coincidentally Apple was experimenting with an iPod based phone.
