So Google's "hype machine" is focusing on a potential Chrome OS and Android OS merge. It would make sense given that Android apps are available on Chromebooks. However, where does that put Andromeda in the tablet market?

Will Apple even be concerned? Given that they are currently selling iPhone 7s/7+s like crazy, control the tablet industry, and control everything from hardware to software development, should they even be slightly more aggressive? Or is Samsung enough for Apple to hit a home-run in 2017? Will that mean iOS 11 will be a huge step up since it will be the 10th anniversary of the iPhone?

That post is all over the place. But for Andromoda....it is said it will run on all devices. Personally I think tablets are dead. No reason to worry about them in the market. "Laptops" and tablets have merged. Hence the reason for this move. Microsoft saw the vision first.

That "merge" happened many years ago. Currently I dont think Tablets are dead, laptops aren't dead, desktops aren't dead. There's a place for all of them.

Not dead yet. But the place for all of them is going away. I have a iPad pro at work. What a waste of a device that is compared to my Surface.

Should Apple be concerned? In my opinion, no. Because their bread-n-butter is the iPhone and they make a good chunk of money on the iPad and Macbook lines. Apple is not very interested in "converged devices".

Should consumers be interested? Yes, (again IMO). There are some interesting possibilities with Andromeda. Whether or not Google runs with those possibilities or plays it safe is another matter.

I really hope for two things:

1. That Apple makes their own equivalent. The iPad has so much unused potential.
2. That this revives the tablet market. I still truly believe that tablets are the future, and they need some sort of kickstart to get them going again.

If this happens, I will strongly consider getting one as my next tablet. I like my iPad, but it could be time to move onto something a bit more convenient.

Chromebook is nothing more than a tablet with a keyboard attached, especially now that they run android apps.

I don't think tablets are dead. What device replaces them in your opinion?

Hybrids. Surface. Chromebooks. Tablets I should say in the sense of a touchscreen only deviceb that runs iOS or Android are dead.

You are thinking very much at an adult level and are not considering the tablet market stretches to 2yr old children all the way up to the older age group. The reason the iPad has sold so well is it is basic as a media device and has wide appeal. You also don't have to change them every 1-2 years either like you would a mobile phone hence why they don't get rotated so often.

A Surface is effectively a tablet laptop and has a totally different user in mind. A chrome book is a laptop and therefore will struggle to be used in the same way. I can't imagine strapping a laptop to the headrest of my car for my daughter to watch films on a long car journey for instance. Tablets are used a lot in schools in recent years and educational apps are becoming big business.

I see no evidence to suggest tablets are dead, far from it to be honest.

Meh, my daughter has loved her windows tablet since she was about 2. I made the decision not to dumb her down on an ipad and am glad that at 4 1/2 she now knows her way around windows quite well. She loves to play around with my surface pro as well, there are some good programs for kids learning that I can't find anywhere else.

I do think chrome or Andromeda will have a better chance than iOS, putting aside brand loyalty and such for a second. Having the ability to approximate a full PC is important. A chrome tablet which can add a mouse/keyboard/external monitor and become a desktop is something which is more useful than a tablet which just stays a tablet IMO.

Tablets won't die until smartphones become foldable IMO.

Anecdotal, in my area a lot of families bring their kids to neighborhood restaurants. Overwhelmingy iPads rule due to the App Store quality (IMO) and are in kids hands. Sometimes each child has an iPad, two or three per family. To each their own I guess.

Well, isn't your daughter so much more intelligent than mine then.

In the UK we don't have anywhere near the same amount of apps for children on windows compared to iOS.

Don't take offence to it. He's letting his brand bias seep through to his daughter and is using some irrelevant device-associated intelligence metric to try to justify it.

Anectodal, well yes obviously, I'm not doing a census, I'm just relating my personal experience. I've scoured the app store for kids educational tools and while there are many, I find there are substantially more quality tools available to the PC. The in app purchase nature of the app store apps also bothers me.

And yeah, to each their own, that's the nature of an opinion. PS /whispers: You're example is anecdotal as well...we'll keep that our secret.

Nope, I never said my daughter was more intelligent than yours. I didn't realize windows programs were region specific.

Yeah no sh&& Sherlock, we all have brand bias. I PREFER A WINDOWS TABLET, there you go, mystery solved thanks to your great detective work. I'm also not using any intelligence metric, I just made the decision that I wanted my daughter to be proficient using a windows PC.

Your post implied very smugly that your approach to providing a learning tool for your daughter was superior because of the choice of Windows tablet. That of course is rubbish. No doubt it provides a very good alternative, but over here app support and variety is better with iOS as it matches our curriculum. We have Mac books and PC'sin our house so our daughters will not lose out learning how to use alternative devices in future years. A lot of learning in the early years is now done using iPads which is why it's useful to have one at home.

Well the smug part seems to be insecurity on your part, not my problem. I also didn't imply, I am flat out saying in my opinion windows is a superior learning tool for my child's learning. If you want to transpose that to mean I'm saying my daughter is superior to yours then I can't stop you, but that's not what I said or meant.

I can't speak to what is available in the UK versus the US, so our discussion is moot anyhow as I'm not in the UK.

Now we've both aired our personal differing opinions we should stop derailing the thread, you can PM me if you would like to further discuss this.

It's not insecurity on my part. This is an internet discussion forum, not a physiatrists waiting room and I was only commenting on the superior tone of what I was reading. None of it was taken to heart nor did it hurt my feelings.

Wow people are so over sensitive these day. So ridiculous, especially on a phone forum.

iOS or Android on a tablet are using dumbed down versions of a OS on a full screen. Sorry if that offends people. And when the iPad came out, that dumbed down OS was needed given the hardware.

But we are at a point where that is no longer needed. The hardware is good enough to support a full OS. And on a powerhouse like the iPad Pro, running iOS is just ridiculous and a waste.

Over sensitive? I said the appeal of iOS was its basic format and the fact tablets are not designed to be as complicated as laptops. What is wrong with an iPad in its current form? Not everybody is looking for a laptop replacement and there is space in the market for both. Don't be offended.

Honestly can't believe some of the people here are even allowed to have kids

The reason the iPad is dumbed down is because desktop operating systems don't do touch well. I have a Windows tablet and Metro hasn't caught on nearly well enough to be used primarily. The desktop side is just a joke in terms of UI for touch input.
