I keep turning off optimised battery charging. Because a bug is keeping turning it back on.

From iOS 13.latest upgraded to iOS 14.2 - the post-install script turned it back on.

I turned it off

I moved to my new iPhone - iPhone 12 Mini. It migrated all my settings. Except optimised battery charging. It turned it back on.

I turned it off.

The next day wanted to show someone where to turn it off - then I realised it's on again.

So I turned it off again.

One day later "just in case" checked. It was on again.

So I turned it off one more time.

For few days checked. It was off finally. Then iOS 14.2.1 came. The post install script turned it back on again.

So I turned it off again.

And this was annoying enough. So I'm now creating this post. Where can I report a bug, that my preference about this setting was not persisted for 6 times?

(Yes, in all cases I selected "turn off", did not select "turn off until next day", I am 100% sure of all 6 cases of turning back off. Yes, at settings --> battery --> battery health --> optimised charging. All the 6 times)

Thanks. Left mine. Since then it turned back on again. Turned off again. It was less than 12 hours ago last time I disabled it. :O

Mine keeps turning on as well with iOS 14.2. Turn it off for the night, then the next day it turned on again.

Same deal here. Been doing it every since the iOS betas. I did file a radar, but Apple fixes what apple wants to fix.

Apple banned me from their discussions because I wouldn't accept a solution to follow their FAQ on turning on optimized battery charging.
That is, they called me stupid for not knowing how to flip a switch, and failing to report a bug.

Funnily enough, this optimised battery charging NEVER worked on both my 6S and 12. It never stops at 80% for a couple of hours and goes ahead to 100% so I never get to see a notification that "charging would be completed around early morning" message

The only evidence I have that it is "working" is that my battery life is 30% lower throughout the day.
Same holds true with my Watch... w/o Optimized, I get 2 days. With it, barely over a day.

I don’t recall ever seeing a notification telling me my phone would be finished charging at a certain time. I just turned the feature off. I don’t leave my phone on the charger longer than is needed to charge.

It should actually show up if you’re one of those people who charge their phones overnight every night. I do charge mine overnight, but doesn’t work and just goes ahead charging it to 100% anyways without the supposed 80% first then complete the rest of the 20% with a notification that mentions a specific time when the charging will be completed

Never had a problem with it until 14.3. I may have missed the charger by a bit but it charged for a couple hours and then stopped. Woke up to ~68%.
Something was eating my battery all morning as that is far from normal standby usage.

^ Did you get a notification that charging will be completed by a specific time when you plugged your charger in?

Never seen that notification. Just seen on the history it's at 80% constant.

This happens on my Apple Watch too. I’ve disabled optimised charging on my watch since I change it before I go to bed nowadays. Every time I restart my watch, it’s toggled on again.

A feature with admirable goals, but the implementation is overwrought, too opaque, and with the issues encountered by users and flaky functionality, is might as well not exist at all.

Who's going to trust a feature that only works under certain circumstances, or only when it wants to, and seemingly ignores a simple on/off switch, causing the user to question whether it works at all? It also ignores the habits of users who don't follow routine, consistent schedules.

Trying to be smart, and insulate users from complexity only works when the fundamental functionality is reliable, and works.

I don't mind this feature at all, I use it all the time for my phone, and it works without any issues. I'm on a XS and I charge with a wireless charger overnight.

But the setting is switchable, and should remain where the user chose to set it to. Not all of us charges overnight, as I don't with my Watch for example, so the setting should of course not auto-switch on after a restart of a device.

I'm having the same issue. My daily activities and their times are different each day; my sleep hours change everyday, and I work rotating shifts. This "Feature" just avoids my cell phone hold a charge right when I need to use it.

Thanks for the info! I swore I turned mine off a while back, but I just checked and it is on. This does not work for me because my schedule is irregular due to work.

Mine never has told me that either. Odd.

This is just another case where Apple thinks they should be the ones deciding how people use their devices. Just like the Volume Notification "feature" that turns down your volume automatically. I mean, I get it, but when you can't account for every use case, let people make their own decision. It's just a bad Apple day today, and the cherry on top was the One subscription renewal debacle. Not cool Apple!
