Another euphoric and heavily flawed Droid review

Yeah. How DARE they approve of a device other than the one we espouse.

And the only 'Anti-Apple' bias in the article is when they complain about Apple's rather draconian approval practices. And I don't think many people would argue against that.

It definitely reads like vzw sponsored the review, but I didn't see much anti-apple bias. I think the "game-changer" statment at the beginning is pretty clearly false, but a little embellishment never hurt anyone.

All in all, it's a more positive review than most I've seen, but not eye-raisingly so.

Well, to be fair, Verizon kicks ass and AT&T is notoriously hit-or-miss in the D.C. Metro area, so it's sensible that the review would be pretty positive from a service point of view.

I have great service in the DC metro area. Only one spot where I go has no coverage from VZW, ATT or TMo.
 
It seems to be a rephrased Verizon press release. Even includes verizon's contact at the end.

That is already possible with windows mobile, a failed platform. It also means no quality control.

Wrong, plenty of free apps are approved by Apple.

3. Giving users the true power to write applications and publish them puts the power of technology in the hands of the people where it belongs, and out of the hands of CEOs and their marketing plans.

Linux freetard argument. How come Linux doesn't have a higher market share than Apple even when Linux is free? Note that Android parallels Linux, where the hobbyists make software without design sense or refinement, testing required of commercial software.

4. Although Verizon has the best network ... extremely innovative Droid.

Innovative? It's essentially a windows mobile phone with android installed. Nothing is innovative there.

Sorry, I don't smoke. But I do know a biased and poorly written "review" when I read it, especially one that does not back up any claims and discusses features that virtually every phone has already. His repeated reference to Apple "censorship" make it sound like this is the first phone where someone can write apps. It would maybe make more sense if the iPhone had 10K apps and the Droid 100K+ not the reverse, but this so called Apple dictatorship somehow has spawned a pretty substantial library to date. As far as errors, he was wrong on app storage on external cards, 3G performance in D.C. and in an earlier review, is very misinformed over Google Voice and it's role in Google's Android plans.

I think the Droid is a fine phone that if i were on Verizon I would probably grab, but the focus on the carrier and a cursory understanding of how apps are handled at Apple make the review laughable.

I agree. I never once had a dropped call when I had Verizon for 4 years. I switch to AT&T and probably 30% of my calls have some type of error. I can't stand AT&T and as soon as my contract is up I'm going back to Verizon, iPhone or not.
 
This seems like another thread out many such threads posted either out of fear or insecurity. I am not even going to bother with the link. I'm happy with my iPhone and I am not that big a fan of apple.
 
But the real benefit of the Droid is that it runs the Android 2.0 operating system (which is owned by Google)

One of its best voice features is the addition of a powerful speakerphone. With a speakerphone, you have the basis of hands-free operation, which is great if you’re in the car and don’t have one of those fancy headsets to hook up. In fact, I almost preferred using the speakerphone to holding the unit up to my ear like a normal phone.

And the Droid also has some really good speech recognition, so you can literally have the phone lying beside you in the car and tell it to dial whatever number you want, then talk without lifting your hands from the wheel or your focus from the road. And it works in English or Spanish.

Never seen in a cellphone before! It's not like my samsung 670 had it...

ouch screen is 3.7-inches and has a 480-by-854 screen capable of displaying 16 million colors. That beats most smart phones, including the Verizon Blackberry Tour with its 64,000-color display. You may think you won’t notice the difference, but the Droid makes YouTube videos look as good as they do on your computer monitor.

Outlook is a desktop email client, not webmail. What does Outlook have to do with the phone?

This is basically like a Global Positioning System device, but it’s a bit smarter than that and actually cross-references your GPS location into real world maps, something not surprising coming from Google....

What other phone has done this for years.... I can't remember what it's called....
You can even mount the Droid in your car to turn it into a fairly powerful GPS system, directing you along virtual maps as you travel.

I posted due to neither reason. Just thought it was interesting in it's obvious flaws and badly researched bias. Clearly, the open source mantra was an underlying driver of the Fed market magazine review. Not afraid of the Drioid or iPhone and do hope the Droid does well and provides some competition - just do not think this review accomplished that and not ready to establish the Droid as an industry game changer just yet.

I'll back you up on this. The writer completely avoided mentioning that there's no killer app, and he completely avoided doing what everyone wants: comparing the droid to the iPhone.
 
And? What difference does it make...We have iPhones, screw what some other company says about their phone.

Edit: What do you expect them to say, we made a phone but iPhone is better, so don't buy our phone. Of course they have to spin their view. They are trying to sell a product. What did you expect, the truth?

Why? Because you say so? Anything and everything is possible. Thus we have the Droid.

The article may be bias which hints at a lack of truth.

Never believe the truth unless it's independently verified, else all you have is faith. Faith is what sometimes causes consumers to buy products that either fail them or they are not satisfied with. The review from what I am hearing is not factual in certain areas. Who knows what the motivation behind the review was?
 
I think it was a good review. I think a lot of people on this message board forget that many people either do not want AT&T service or cannot receive AT&T service. It is foolish to think there should not be other choices. Apple will not put the iPhone on Verizon so as it stands right now the Droid is the best choice if you want or need Verizon coverage.

As far as the screen quality goes the Droid is much better then the iPod Touch or iPhone. I own an iPod Touch and a Droid. If I play the same high quality video file side by side the Droid looks much better. The Droid not only beats it in resolution, but also color quality. The Touch looks faded and grainy next to the crystal clear Droid screen. I always thought the screen on my iPod Touch was nice until I got the Droid.

I never had a dropped call in a year with AT&T living in DC (iPhone 2G).

If they do that then you just have fan boys jumping up and down saying that it is false for *blank reason*
It does not matter which side you are on (driod or apple fan boy) both will do it.

umm minus the fact that you started bashing the review so it shows you have insecurity issues from the compitiion. The only thing against apple I saw in that entire review was a hit at apple piss poor review process. Out side of that apple and the iPhone were not referred to or even talk about.

I believe you may have the stranglehold on insecurity issues. Referencing a poorly written review and including examples makes me insecure from a $200 cell phone? Get over it, your Droid will do well in the market and everyone will be better because of it. That still does not change the fact that the review was basically an ad for Verizon and open source software and never backed up the headline claim of an industry wide game changer.
