iPod Any 1st and 2nd generation iPods in use?

Just wondering whether anyone here uses those early iPods anymore... Or are all of those out of commission.

It's interesting because those iPods are compatible with 9.2.2 but after it's a no go.

I used my 1st Gen 5 GB recently while by 60 GB 5G was being fixed. It still works like a charm. Don't know why you think it doesn't work with OS X - mine still syncs with the latest iTunes.

I am. I have a 2nd Generation 20GB and it gets used every now and then as a portable hard drive. I keep it around because it connects directly to the FireWire port vs USB which isn't always free. It is funny when I pull it out.. onlookers usually go and comment on it's size

Oh and it still works with OSX and iTunes.. also the battery is still functional, has outlived my other one there.. the one with the row of buttons... I forget the Generation numbers now.

I *think* princealfie means that 3rd Gen and newer don't work with OS 9, not that 1st and 2nd Gen don't work with OS X.

I pulled my 2nd Gen out and charged it up the other day for the first time in about 6 months to find that the battery is all but dead. ):

Yeah I tried to plug in my 4G 60gb iPod photo and it didn't work on my iTunes on OS 9.2.2

Oh well, I realized that only the old ones seems to work with the old iTunes.

Proud 1st Gen 5GB owner here... though I gotta admit it's starting to go south on me... the FireWire port is very loose, and half the time it won't charge/sync unless it's in EXACTLY the right position... One of these days I'm going to attempt a little open-heart surgery and resolder the firewire port.

It's served me well these past 5 years though, and I'm putting off getting a new one for as long as possible!

2nd Gen 20GB still in use as an external harddrive.

On continuous play, the battery life is quite good, but once I turn it off there is absolutely no standby time. I have to charge it every day.

I still use my 1st gen 5GB iPod once in a while... honestly I never used it as much as I thought I would, so it's still in really good shape.

My 1st gen Shuffle gets used much more often due to it's small size. A nano would probably be nice, but I'd rather spend my money on other things.

i wish i could use my 1st gen iPod... it died of logic board failure...

if anyone has a 1st gen iPod with an operational logic board (ie has a dead screen or HDD), and you want to get rid of it, can you PM me to negotiate costs etc.?

2G 10gb ipod died on me 3 weeks ago. The ear phone outlet is a bit messed up.
I have to move the connector of my headphones around to get some sound.

I gave up and am using my bro's ipod mini till the new models are out.

my 2G 20GB has seen better days. battery can't hold a charge, screen contrast is shot, and the case is scratched up...

... but it still sees some duty on road trips. works great plugged into the AUX jack in the center armrest of my prius.

It also works great as a portable Firewire drive (no Dock-connector!)

Mine too. The headphone jack on the Remote has that wider ring around it that gives a nice solid connection, for me at least.

i have the 3rd generation ipod with dock connector, it is 15 gb with the 4 touch buttons. It works well i have had it for 3 years now. It works fine with my windows xp at home, but havent tried it with a mac.

is there anyone else out there with the same kind as me..... i havent seen anyone.

Gen 1 iPod

My 1G iPod is still going strong, as long as I keep it charged. No problem with OSX, ' mostly use a video iPod, though, until I recently got it damp, and its now not up to snuff, so I need a new iPod, but don't want to buy _now_
if a new iPod might be released within 60-90 days.

ANY IDEA WHEN THE NEXT GEN iPod MIGHT BE RELEASED?

I still have and use my 3G 20GB iPod. The battery actually died (remember back in '05, how Apple offered a free replacement for those who bought an iPod between certain dates?) so I had to get it repaired (aka, Apple replaced my broken iPod with a refurbished 3G 20GB model).

The battery charge doesn't last long, but it still plays music on the way to school which is all that I care about.

My 2G 20gig iPod is alive and well. Since my CD player went down, I mostly keep it plugged into the stereo. The sound is great and it holds a charge: just a great piece of kit. It's a bit old and out of date... but then so am I...

My 2nd Gen 10gig is still working fine. It's being exclusively used in my car (through an auxiliary jack), as I am less paranoid about leaving it in my car than my 5.5G. I did replace the battery about a year or so ago, since it was at the point where it wasn't holding a charge for more than a couple of hours.

My cousin has first and second gen iPods he uses to this day, bought them off eBay for cheap. Says they work great, though originally one fell in beer, stopped working for months, then magically started working again one day

I have a hand-me-down 1st generation 5GB iPod that still works. It usually won't sync properly, but every once in a while it does and I get new podcasts and whatnot on there at that point. Works fine for me, as there's a very, very long list of things I'd spend money on before getting a new iPod. Battery (original) still lasts long enough for a couple commutes to work (say 4+ hours).

1st Gen 10gig here. My hard drive is failing and I have to punch my iPod to get it going every once in a while, but it works fine once it's on. I know I need a new one soon though.

For those of you with weak batteries in your iPods, can't you send it back to Apple using the battery replacement program, and receive in return a new iPod?

I have a 3G iPod with a poor battery, and would like to know if it would be replaced with a current generation iPod, or an old, refurbished 3G. Any ideas? When the new iPods come out (September 5?), could it be replaced with one of those?

I'd prefer to either get another 3G as the replacement (to keep my firewire connection), or the new iPod (widescreen most likely).

I don't know how it happened but a friend of mine gave in a 2G for a new battery and he got a video so i suppose it could happen for you to.
