I might end up with an Xr after the "splat" occurring with the Xs. Either that or another 8 Plus, as I need a second phone for my wife. Plan was she was getting my 8 Plus, I was getting Xs, but after the issues that have been posted I might just end up with an Xr or another 8 Plus.

I don't expect the Xr screen to be an issue, but was wanting the other flagship features that the Xs provides (the big display primarily). i actually like the retina displays and understand why OLEDs might be annoying/eye fatiguing at close range for some people, although I don't find them an issue.

The hardware upgrades aren’t minimal. The benchmark scores are not a massive difference, but going from a 5.5” lcd to a 6.5” OLED is about as big of an upgrade as you can get. Not to mention the extra ram, 7nm, 4x4 Mimo, band 71 on Tmobile, gigs lte. I miss my Max badly, but the headaches affected me too much. Love my 8+, but the Max wipes the floor with it IF you can handle the screen and not feel discomfort.

EugW pretty much summed up my thoughts so rather than type it twice I'll quote him in bold.

Agreed. I have an OLED TV too - LG 65" C8, and it is glorious. For a phone, I don't really care that much. OLED is nice but not a must have.

I hear ya. I've got the 65" B7 I bought in February. Amazing display. Don't care about it on the phone though for reasons I'll mention below.

The extra vertical resolution is definitely nice, but I don't see the extra RAM going from 3 to 4 GB as that big of a deal, at least in the next year or two. This is not the situation like with the 6 Plus --> 6s Plus where RAM was doubled from 1 GB to 2 GB. 1 GB back then was already limiting, and 2 GB made quite a noticeable difference. Now we're talking 3 GB vs 4 GB, and 3 GB is very decent for iOS 12.

So even with the RAM difference, and the vastly faster SoC in the Max, side by side for what I use the phone the most for - internet access - there really isn't a huge difference in performance.

Yep... 3gb to 4gb isn't enough to make me run out and buy a new phone. My 8 Plus handles everything I throw at it just fine.

As for the OLED, see above. I just don't see it as being critical on a phone, mainly because its main advantage of beautiful blacks is lost in a bright room. Most of the time my phone usage is with the lights on or in daytime. In dim light OLED definitely has a bigger advantage, but I suspect for a lot of people it's just not that important. And as mentioned, I say that as an OLED fan, one of the comparatively few people out there that actually spent the extra money to get a large OLED TV.

Spot on about the OLED. You know what my home theater looks like? A dark room with blackout curtains. The benefits of OLED are lost in a bright room! While I love OLED enough that I wouldn't have LCD for anything other than a spare room TV... it's fine on my phone for 1 more year. Apple's LCDs are pretty solid.

I would suggest waiting to check out the XR in person, or at least compare your screen vs the 7 or 8. While the XR screen will be decent - same quality as 7 or 8 - it still won’t be quite as good as your 7 Plus’ screen.

I'm not a heavy video user by any means, one YouTube video here and there the reset is checking email, texts and quick browser searching. I'm okay with the 720p vs 1080p quality. I know a lot of people use their smartphones for Netflix and the like, but I'm a watch it on TV type of person.

I've had my 8+ for a year now and will keep it until it dies, or I lose it. Hopefully that's at least 3 years from now.

Video quality won’t be an issue at all.

The main concern would be text quality, but the quality differences may or may not be noticeable or important to you.

My battery is at 88% (according to the battery health section) capacity after nearly 2yrs and I use my iPhone constantly. What's you's look like ?

Yes, I'm going to try out the XR this October and if it doesn't work out/if I don't like it for whatever reason I'll just hold onto my 8 Plus for a while.

Tried upgrading to the iPhone XS but had to almost immediately return it due to the pulse-width modulating OLED display causing severe eye strain and nausea. A disappointing experience to say the least.

To be precise: 828p, not 720p
Right…also many fail to realize and/or mention that the display resolution is closer to 1080p than 720p.

EDIT: I'm not sure were I picked up this info, but at least going by straight pixel counts it appears to be incorrect, as illustrated by a few quick calculations:

Feel free to correct me if this is wrong.

Not doing it. Debated going XR from 8, but now I am very happy with my new 8+. Even got it in red.

I want a 1080p screen and I like optical zoom. I don’t take low light pictures, I don’t need more than 64gb of HD... I just don’t need the XR. Would’ve gotten one if I could’ve justified it. Neat idea, just not for me.
