The pictures themselves are 100% just taken from Apple's site, but that doesn't mean the end product won't match the description, eh!

As long as it's not the same as Apple's with its overhang, else it defeats the purpose!

That part is unknown at this point, of course. For me that's not the only purpose, as I was looking for a leather one, and one that I didn't feel I was getting the shaft for price-wise.

Hi there. I have a similar question and found this thread.

I have an iPad Pro 12.9 inch and I'm looking for a cheaper smart cover only option. If companies can produce the smart cover + case for $9.99, it feels absurd to pay $59 for just the smart cover part.

My reasoning is that I will buy a separate case that is compatible with a cover, but I need the cover to be detachable (sometimes I need to use my iPad vertically in a separate stand, or I want to be able to hold it vertically while reading without any extra bulk).

It seems like no manufacturers are making just the smart cover for the 12.9" iPad Pro. Is Apple intentionally preventing this? Has anyone found any cheap alternatives that are JUST the cover?

Thanks!

It's actually easier to make the case - and have some easy way to differentiate from Apple's offerings. Apple's Smart Cover needs magnets along the side with the Smart Connector, and be strong enough the iPad doesn't just fall off.

No, Apple doesn't prevent anyone from that, the problem is that if there is no demand then there is no supply.
So to get something like that out on the market, you need to be sure that it will sell well, which is usually not the case.
That is why you can't find it, not so many people need something like that.

Just got a new iPad. Anyone know if there is a non-apple front cover for the iPad Pro 10.5 without a back?

I doubt it. Not much money to be made on Smart Covers as you’d need strong enough magnets. I’ve seen some iPad 2nd and 3rd Gen style metal “spine” ones, ie not covered. I wouldn’t get those. Much cheaper for them to make it with the back which the cover attaches to without magnets.

Fair enough, but does anyone have one where the cover can be removed. I hate the flappy when I want to hold it in one hand while I walk around reading.
