Working on my M1 in bed. Put it next to me for like thirty seconds on a soft duvet to take a call. Pick it back up to this damaged screen / graphics card. See attached images.

Wasn’t bumped, hit or damaged in any way. There is no crack or mark whatsoever. The screen is perfectly smooth, with no marks. Just suddenly happened.

I’m contacting AppleCare. But would still like to know anyone’s thoughts. Got a feeling they going to say I bumped it.

That's what I'd expect to see from an impact or pressure at the spot where the cracks all run together. That screen will need to be replaced.

It looks like that. But there was zero contact. Like none. I’m not trying to convince applecare here. Honestly. Nothing nada. It was right next to me. And I just picked it up. And there’s zero external damage or marking.

Fractured display. Like you picked it up with your thumb on the screen or more likely closed the screen when you had something on the keyboard, either way that sux ?. Insurance will cover it, unlikely that Apple will fix it for free tho.

Lid wasn’t closed. And there’s nothing on the keyboard. I just picked up like normal from the side of me on the bed with the base. After like a few seconds. It wasn’t lying around or Unguarded. On minute it’s fine. Next it isn’t. Nothing happened in between.

Good luck on getting that replaced. It must suck for sure. I wonder if there was a hairline fracture or blemish from the factory that just let go.

I can’t see any hairline cracks. I’m guessing there could be an internal crack? That can’t be seen externally?

As the M1 macs are new, Apple might take it and replace it for free if you are really lucky. They sometimes do it just so they can get their hands on it for testing and to rule out manufacturing issues. Although, this form factor is not new, but good luck ??

I’ve had laptops including Airs like forever. Never has this happened to me before. My usage and care of it is the same as all other machines.

It's pretty rare to see external cracks, since the LCD panel itself is sandwiched between many layers, including the external glass. The LCD itself will tend to break due to stresses/shock before the cover glass does. Most cases I've seen of damaged monitors don't have a lot of external damage, if any.

I broke an old Lombard PowerBook G3 I was using in college. It fell from a table maybe 3 feet high at most. It landed perfectly so the lid was open, and vertical. The only damage was the shattered LCD. It otherwise still looked like new. Go figure.

EDIT: I'm not trying to claim how your display broke at all, BTW. Just pointing out these suckers are sensitive to shocks.

It's likely a manufacturing defect in the case.

I am interested to see how Apple service works as people seem to love it around these forums.

Personally, I've never used them myself.

Best of luck and have a good evening

Well, we’ve just onto AppleCare and showed them the photos. They want to “look into it” and get hold of my machine for a possible exhange (although who knows Once examined).

Not totally unprecedented. The Surface 3 had this problem:

Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself and everyone else you didn't break it. Sorry your laptops screen is broken. You're going to have a hard time convincing anyone much less Apple that YOU didn't cause it.

I mean, see what Apple says. If you really didn't do anything to break it then it's a defect. I'm sure Apple can see if there pressure involved with the crack. And question, you don't have a keyboard cover correct? I had one on my 2014 MBP and it would leave those keyboard marks. I was always scared my screen would crack one day. It didn't. I didn't buy one for my M1. I feel like these screens would break easier. Just because.

Thanks Sherlock. I can see it's broken. I'm trying to figure out how and why, hence the title. There's really no need to convince myself or anyone here that I didn't break it, as I don't get anything out of doing so. I posted as I was surprised, as something like this has not happened to any of my laptops before, and I wanted to use the expertise on this forum.

The good news this morning is that Apple is convinced. AppleCare chat reviewed the photos. They then escalated it to a different, senior team in sales (I'm not sure why it was sales) in the UK, who phoned back and reviewed the chat, photos, and the issue with me. As it's within 14 days, they found a slot at my local store for me this afternoon, even though all appointments were fully booked online, and authorised and arranged for me to pick up a replacement (as it's the 8GB model) this afternoon at 5 pm. The Air itself is being picked up by UPS from my house for a mail in to wherever Apple look at such things. I told them I couldn't manage without one for work.

One other thing, a very small sample I know, but all my friends who bought M1s (three of them, four including me) have had manufacturing problems and returned. The SoC M1 has been fine. It's been other issues: speakers crackling, bluetooth not connecting to anything, Apple / LG monitor not connecting properly, stuttering performance doing basic web browsing.

Makes me wonder if there are some quality control issues in some of the new supply chains Apple opened up during Covid to decrease reliance upon Chinese factories.

Hi!

Before you send the machine back can you get the serial number of the bottom and run through the serial number decoder to determine when it was made, which week and by which supplier.

I actually, think that the people who ordered right at the beginning (day of) got the best machines as they were made pre-launch and that Apple is struggling, or has had to, ramp up demand and these slightly newer machines are the culprit.

Did you pay for AppleCare? Or is this the standard UK warranty?

im honestly amazed how you got this kind of damage with no contact or abuse. I have a 2017 macbook pro which has taken hundreds of falls, off my workbench onto the concrete floor of my shop..kitchen table to tile floor, has all the corners dented in and the back corner of the screen is tweaked making the image get slightly lighter in the corner. STILL dont have any cracks or damage like your shows. How did I get so lucky

According to: https://serial-number-decoder.co.uk/apple-serial-number/apple-serial.php

"This 'MacBook Air (M1, 2020)' was made in Tech Com - Quanta Computer Subsidiary, China in week 45 of 2010."

I suspect they mean week 45 of 2020. I bought mine as a store pick up on Friday 20th November.

I just have the standard AppleCare, not the paid AppleCare+
