Cheating in the sense that using a computer to correct mistakes from the lack of natural talent. I started drawing long before I ever used a computer and a lot of the magic is lost when you use a computer to generate artwork.
There was a time not long ago where using the computer for any illustration was considered "cheating".

I find the computer no faster or easier then drawing by hand. Its just a different medium.

If you want the piece to look like you drew it by hand then why dont you just draw it by hand???

Let the computer do what it does best, very fast difficult calculations and algorithms.

It actually takes me longer to wrestle an illustration into looking like it was hand drawn then to just draw it.

People are more impressed by an actual drawing then a computer rendering that looks like a drawing.

I'm not an illustrator by trade but I like to draw quite a bit. This is one from a series I'm working on based on the book Faust. Drawn on paper, manipulated in Photoshop and Painter with a Wacom Intuos 3. It looks a lot better when printed on archival Rives paper.

I'm talking about the difference between natural lines and computer generated.

Here are 2 of my older illustrations, both done in photoshop. The first one was drawn/painted completely with the pen tool while the 2nd was all drawn/painted freehand:

See the difference? In the first one makes me look like a better illustrator than the 2nd even though it was done years before the 2nd one. It "feels" like cheating because I am able to cover up all the flaws I have as an artist.

Flaws??
I call it the "human element".
I prefer the second one.

Like I said, stop trying to force the computer to look like its not a computer. Accept what the computer does and start exploiting it;) .

Pencil drawing...I wish I had a better scan (i.e. one that was on the original white background), but I don't. So this will have to do. It's a drawing of one of my pairs of shoes, from about 5 years ago or so. I need to make time to do more drawing.

So do I. Hears a couple things from a few years back: First a graphite sketch for a useless machine (unfinished), and second a mixed media and cyanotype. In terms of computer work: I have left it out for the reason that the computer is really just another pencil, brush, or knife. As far as I see it, digital is one more tool to add to the kit, and will not ever replace any other method or media.

I appreciate both abstract interpretations and realist art.

You have a phenomenal talent, please keep at it.

Do you have a website.

Rich.

Again, beautiful!

Are you a Giger fan ?

It seems like it and would be a shame if you weren't.

Also, check out Chris Cunningham, a video artist.

Fantastic skill. Keep working at it.
How come in your "self portrait in oil" did you spend so much time on the face and then totally cop out on the background? seems unfinished....

Some of my work...

I love sketching but, I also love animation. So when animating I keep things simple but, when sketching I use a lot of detail. Although most of my time is spent on the computer I love sketching with a good old pencil and paper. :D

On my homepage I have some cartoon stuff and some work from my portfolio in class. Some of the work from the portfolio class is admittedly rushed a bit just to get the grade but, I'll add some better content to it later. On the Sonic page I have a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog related sketches and artwork. On my Deviant Art page I have some quick sketches, photos, avatars, and some other stuff. :D I have a lot of sketches I'm going to scan in so I'll update you guys if I find anything cool. :) I found an old Mac Wacom tablet that uses the old Apple serial ports but, as many of you have said it's too sensitive and not the same as paper. Attached is one of my favorite Sonic sketches. :) Tell me what you guys think!

I didn't cop out.. it was a descision I made due to the project the piece was apart of..

I did a range of paintings which were all about me.. not just portraits. I decided to simplify the background to place more emphasis on myself. Painting the background seemed pointless and would have been a waste of time. It wouldn't have been that difficult to do.

If I was trying to replicate the entire photo.. I would have done..

P.S - I love to see original art, I agree that using Photoshop and illustrator takes from a piece. I only use it for colouring rendering illustrations.. I shall post some soon
