One thing to warn you guys about who are considering downsizing…

I did that about two years ago and I am contemplating getting rid of my mini because I notice my eyes have gotten worse because I end up holding it much closer to my face to be able to see things correctly and easily.

Obviously this might not be an issue for all of you but it is food for thought.

For now I’m back to the 2018 11” iPad Pro. The switch back to 60hz was too jarring for me; that was one thing that I didn’t think I’d care about at all when ordering but it turns out I do, especially with the upgrade to the 13 pro max as well. I really love the size, that is what I’m going to miss the most. Hopefully in 2-3 years when this mini has promotion I’ll get it.

in better news, my wife now has an iPad mini that she loves! ?

please, can anyone share if they are in similar situation as an iPad Pro user

I am tempted, I've always been drawn to smaller tablets, and yet I bought the M1 13" IPP. I love the ginormous screen, the display is gorgeous, the M1 doesn't really seem to be anything that I'm taking advantage. The battery life is very disappointing.

As for the Mini, I can see this being more portable and useful, but given what I've spent on equipment in 2021, I don't think I'll buy one - my wife will kill me :)

between the pro and mini how do the screens compare, specifically, the text size is the mini text size small?

is going back and forth from iPhone 12 to 13 just as jarring? I never noticed any thing when switching between iPads with pro motion to iPhone 12.

I traded my 12 in for the 13 so didn’t really get to use both at the same time. But comparing the 13 to my wife’s 12 (who is getting annoyed with how I’m trying to show her the difference between 60hz and 120hz), there is a slight difference. When I first started using the 13 it felt like a huge difference, the 13 is just ultra smooth. I never felt that the 12 was choppy though. Comparing the 2 side by side makes the difference clear but it doesn’t feel that bad.

when I used to use the iPad Pro and iPhone 12, I never noticed any major difference in smoothness switching between the two; at least I never felt like the 12 was choppy.

I just feel that the iPad mini’s screen isn’t that great. The first review of it I watched was MKBHD’s and Dave2D’s who both said the pro has a better screen. At the time I didn’t think I’d notice that much of a difference but I whole-heartedly agree with them now. It feels like Apple didn’t source their screens that well, or there are some quality control issues.

whenever pro-motion comes to the iPad mini it’ll be an absolute killer. That will truly be the perfect device (faceID would be nice too but not a dealbreaker for me).

On my Minis, I turn up the Text Size (in Settings) one notch from the default. This only affect apps that support "dynamic type," but I find it makes it more comfortable going back and forth between my 11" and one of the Minis.
Of course, this means you see slightly less text on the screen.
The Mini has very high resolution, so small text is not a problem - you just have to hold it a bit closer and have good eyesight. If you want to hold it at the same distance, I find turning up the text size one notch more comfortable for me.

Saw the mini yesterday in a store. It’s way too little, yet it’s very lightweight. I wouldn’t give up my 12.9” pro for it. Watching movies on the mini is not a pleasurable experience. The sound is ok, picture viewing is good. Document editing is passable for short documents. It’s a niche device fulfilling specific use cases. However, I don’t find it useful for me. I find it strange people want to downsize to it. You must have gotten the wrong device in first place because iPad minis have been around for quite a lot of time already.

The early minis were pretty constrained performance-wise. The mini 4 was noticeably laggier than the Air 2 but remained in the lineup for 4 years. It wasn't really until the mini 5 in 2019 that we got a good mini.

There are subtle changes you can make in Accessibility, like enlarging icons and slightly bigger letters in reading, that make the Mini more comfortable to use.

I think a lot of people see the Mini as a supplemental device, not a primary. I have a 12.9 Pro for the heavy lifting and the Mini for the portable stuff, like Kindle reading.
