Apple was [one of] the first to permanently incorporate USB in the production machines long before it gained any popularity. Same with Firewire. Same with FW800. I trust Apple's vision on USB 3.0

If you can wait 6 - 8 Months for the next POSSIBLE imac refresh then go ahead. Unfortunately there is nothing we can really do about it especially if you need a computer.

Technology is always changing. The next refresh will have i5 in entry level , keep waiting and things keep changing is an impossible race to win unless you have lots of cash.

Agree. And i also think i can live without it.. i think it will take a time before product force you to use USB 3 right away.

hope my 2 year old computer holds on

I see current Apple lineup as transitional in terms of external storage; they seem to be deemphasizing firewire and USB will soon be upgraded but it currently can't match firewire for hard disk speed in my experience. I assume today's computers couldn't be modified to utilize USB 3.0

Just putting this out there...

But I've had my iMac since early 2006 and well, I plan on having it until I graduate from college in 2012. Currently I'm upgrading it's Hard Drive, Processor and network card to bring it up to speed. So rather than buying a new computer I decided to invest (+ a ram upgrade I already completed) about 300 dollars on my 4 year old computer. Some people think this is silly, but for someone in my economic situation and trying to lengthen the life of his computer, such a question as whether the next generation of iMacs will have USB 3.0 or not is a great and valid question from the thread starter.

Personally... when I get my next computer, which will be a mac, in 2012, I will be buying top of the line again, and again looking to use my computer for an additional 5-6 years.

Cheers!

Wait for Loght Peak which has a chance of appearing in the next iMac; USB 3.0 will be also implemented if Intel adopts it in Sandy Bridge.
And, if the iMac just has Light Peak then you can / should be able to buy a adapter to USB 3.0.
Also, you can / should be able to buy Light Peak to HDMI adapter so you can connect you PS3 and blu ray player.

I just bought one of the new iMacs because I had to have a new computer now. I'm not too worried about 3.0 because I read somewhere recently that Jobs wasn't sold on the implementation for some reason and it would be late next year before it would hit new Macs.

As for peripherals, if you think many won't hit stores soon, wrooooong. I was shopping for an external hard drive last week and saw plenty of USB 3.0 drives. They were about $20 or so more than the 2.0 drives, but that could've been because they were clearing out the "old" 2.0 models of Western Digital drives. I was getting this for my dad to use as part Time Machine backup, part storing videos. I haven't noticed any issues playing video from my 2.0 HDD, so I was more than willing to grab the $107 2TB drive. I even didn't mind it at 5400rpm since I couldn't find another 2TB drive that I knew was 7200rpm for less than $150.

I do hope Apple moves faster on this than it has on Blu-ray. Apple can keep telling itself that optical media is on the way out, but please go to the homes of people you know. I'm willing to bet at least 19 out of 20 of them watch ALL of their movies on DVDs or BDs. It'll probably be two or three years before the vast majority of new USB products that matter are 3.0.
