The HP MFP M477fdw [laser] has been the best piece of kit I've purchased (outside of my 2012 MP) . . . two years of relatively-average use has been completely error-free (hard/soft).

The factory toner that came with it lasted longer than the entire Canon inkjet (while it worked, t'was fantastic) I used, prior.

The 4 XL toner carts did set me back just a bit more than the printer, itself, but they should last well-through 2022, so I ain't crying' ;)

It seems that brand name has no meaning in the printer world, its really a per model basis. One HP can be great, another total garbage. So is the situation with all other brands.

This might be exactly what you are looking for

https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L3290CDW-Providing-Convenient-Replenishment/dp/B07FN78LY5

It’s scans, prints color and has airprint.

You are correct! ironically I ended up buying that model!

There are many candidate MFPs that can do that.

Its not about what it can or can not do, its about how well it does it and how long it will last or reliability.
I have 1 B/W laser printer that works beautifully 3 years later. I had a color inkjet from HP that started to malfunction same month of purchase.

Hence the word "candidate". What he listed was a very basic set of functions.

Didn't say what scanning. If have a smartphone, tons of apps (including iOS Notes) can scan.

Need color or not? Personally, have not used color in years. Brother B/W laser for me: cheap, fast, toner lasts forever. Hardly print anything these days.
I've printed about 12,000 pages so far on a cheap Brother B&W laser -- I think it set me back maybe $110? -- and it's still going quite strong. I calculated my total cost per page at one point (including drum, toner, paper) and got something like 2¢/page. It's rock steady on my wifi and has jammed a total of about 5 times even though I habitually buy the cheapest paper I can get my hands on.

And before this, I had another $100 Brother laser printer I got maybe 15K pages out of before it died.

Wirecutter has some pretty good rundowns of printers: https://thewirecutter.com/search/?s=laser+printer

I saw a Canon with duplex ADF and FAX for only $5 more than the Brother linked above at amazon.com (laser, not LED).

i bought a low cost Brother 2350dw wifi laser printer and after printing 350 pages it decided the toner cartridge was empty.
i looked on youtube to defeat the optical sensor but the deed was already done. I had to get onto the printer internal web page to reset the "empty status".

-to date we have printed another 100+ pages w/o a loss in print quality
-the printer "empty status" was detected while i was printing my federal taxes

good luck with the next 15,000 pages

Colours off and smearing may well not be down to the printer.
The paper you use makes a huge difference (and it supplies the white) so if it's smearing, it may be just that the paper isn't absorbing the ink properly.
Colours off is tricky, but it can be really hard to match what's on screen to what the printer does for a whole load of technical reasons to do colour space and what program you print in I'm afraid.
So a pain though it is, it may well be worth your while checking that it's not the driver, or using a different print program or something.
Always use the original cartridges too. Yes, you can get much cheaper ink from third parties but the only time i've ever had a problem was third party ink it can cost you more in the long run when it messes something up.

HP printers traditionally have the heads in the cartridges which make them expensive but means you get new heads each time. I've found their software to be huge and cumbersome but they usually print ok.
Epson are really the photographers' printer. A bit trickier to set up but they have the reputation of having the best colour.
They do tend to dry out if you don't use them regularly though, which means the heads die so they can be a real pain for occasional use.
Personally, I've usually gone for Canon and they are probably just behind Epson for photos but they are really easy to use and consistent. Last well. I don't know what your problem with Canons is but they do make excellent gear.

My problem is that I usually go for the famous standard in everything. Forever HP and Epson were the king of printers, Canon is more known to be a camera and lens company I guess.

People who are informed know that Canon is a serious printer maker.

i thought I would add this to the thread
I recently replaced the toner cartridge for my new Brother HLL2350DW monochrome laser printer:

The disposables for this printer are:
Brother TN730 Black Toner, 1200 Pages
or
Brother TN760 High Yield Black Toner, 3000 Pages
and
Brother DR730 Drum, 12000 Pages

i recently bought an ebay tN-760 cartridge ~$15.00
there is an id chip on these cartridges and some ebay sellers do not ship with a chip. You need to transfer your old id chip onto the new cartridge. Plenty of youtube video to guide you. Process is easy but just so you know.
