I have just heard so much about the strong possibility that the next iPads will have the OLED display. I’m just not the slightest bit interested either in paying extra for that or for risking the possibility of burning in.
However, once the M3s are out (supposedly later this year), the M1s and M2s will be even less expensive. Just wait for people to upgrade and buy their nicely decked out M1; I got an 13” cellular 1TB M1 with MK and Pencil for a $1050.

Soldered-in, irreplaceable ssd & OS’s increasingly hostile to booting off external drives.

Fine to buy new, but you don‘t want to be caught holding the hot potato bc when the music stops bc the whole computer goes in the junk.

I agree about the costs. OLED will unlikely add £150-200 extra to the price.

Any downsides to buying that gen at this stage?
In my opinion, no. If you are pushing the iPad to the limits, then an M2 would be better - but you'd know if you're pushing it to the limit.

What was your iPad Pro use? If you don't need a fast chip, then an M1 would be above and beyond your needs.

My M1 is the longest kept and most used iPad I’ve ever had. I got mine in June 2021 with the MKB.

Since OLED is not necessarily a clear winner over Mini LED and the M1 chip is more than enough power for an iPad, this will be my only iPad for many years to come. Even if I go for periods without using it eventually, I’m not selling it.

Also my battery is still going incredibly strong for as many times as I’ve charged it with nearly daily use over the past 2 years. Just overall super impressed and happy with it.

Well said. I got my 12.9 M1 around the same time you did. It's a great iPad. I wouldn't sell mine neither.

Urgh - went to install Final Cut Pro on my iPad Pro and it said it's not supported! 5th gen and up only. Jeez :(

Thing is I'm interested in the 2024 one now too with the more laptop like integration of the next gen magic keyboard so maybe now's not the best time to jump in on an M1... stuck in decision hell!

How badly do you want to use a newer iPad?

Sadly, the "more laptop light integration" is just a rumor. If there is a Magic Keyboard with a "laptop like integration", there will be clones released for other iPads.
