My gamer buddy says that CRTs reign on high, as well.

I have one because my boyfriend's family was going to throw it out; figured I'd keep it to use as solely a (slow, but better than cluttering up my iMac) 'gaming' machine. It's huge and tacky though. It's free, right?

Yes, used one with my Mac Mini like others have stated. It is really only a secondary machine though. Then it bit the dust and I saw no reason to buy another, so I got a cheap flat panel. I was very tempted by a 20" ACD even though it would be way overkill for my occasional usage. It just looks so damn cool with the mini!

Hi .I was wondering if anyone still uses crt monitors or has anyone purchase brand new one recently. Thanks

If you are expecting a no from the vast majority, then ask again in 10 years or so.

Many years ago when I bought an HP running WIN 98SE I got the CRT monitor that was bundled with it. Finally after a few weeks I realized that there was something really wrong when I could spend all day at work on a computer and never experience any problems but when I was at home on my own computer I'd develop headaches after an hour or so... Eventually I figured out that the HP CRT monitor was flickering badly and that was causing me distress. Went out in search of a new monitor, came home with a beautiful LCD Samsung and never looked back.... Next Windoze machine I bought, I again went with a Samsung LCD monitor. No more heavy, bulky, flickering CRTs for me! Now that I've gone into the Mac world, I've got an iMac and a PB, so no decisions necessary about a monitor, but if/when I buy a Power Mac, I definitely will be putting an LCD monitor with it.....

I had a CRT until a couple of years ago, worked fine. The LCD monitor that I eventually ended up getting was taken from my brother after he got a larger monitor. I just wish I could change the resolution the way I could with my CRT, the native resolution just isn't enough for me.

You know, they do make CRTs that go higher than a 60Hz refresh rate. ;) I can spot that a mile away and it gives me a headache too, but 85Hz and up is fine. Plus the color on LCDs always looks too washed-out to me, the viewing angle is never good enough, and the ability to do multiple resolutions is still important, so I'm sticking with my 19" Viewsonic PF790 for the foreseeable future. The bulkiness is a drawback, but then again it's a good theft-deterrent. :)

Does anyone still use the Apple Studio Display CRT that was see through? That was one of the most gorgeous displays Apple has ever made. If anyone still uses this, please put up a pic of your set up.

yep, i have dual 17" crts hooked up to my pc.

i would love to have a couple of lcd's lying around, but i have no money left, you know, after paying for school, buying a new car, a $2500 powerbook etc...

I have 2 CRT. Both are Viewsonic and are 17" (A71f+) and 19" (P95f+B). They are both very nice but the 19" cost a bundle and really has a great picture. When it comes down to everyday computer use though an LCD is better as they strain your eyes less. My 19" CRT will suit my media center well. Later this week I am buying a Dell 2005FPW (20" widescreen LCD).

The 17" says goodbye to the setup and my 2 secondary macs get the 19". Dell uses the same screen in the model I am getting as Apple uses in their 20".

Yup,
To answer spencecb's post, have one of those. I agree was great looking CRT. Always wanted one for a few years. Picked one up off e-bay about 2 years ago. Has Apple ADC connector and powered USB hub on side.
Will try to post pic soon.
Still love the brightness, crispness and ability to change resolution on CRT,
even though use Apple 17" LCD with cube, as primary set-up, Have it with G4 tower.

(ps my first post after years of lurking:) )

Used a Mitsubishi Diamondtron 22" CRT Monitor at 2048 x 1536 Resolution for many years doing fine color work, etc. Best CRT available IMO. Waited for a few years until LCD's were just about as good as high end CRT's and made the switch. Now I have a 30" ACD and love it. :)

One of the Art department computer labs has CRT's while the main one used 17" Apple LCD. Still use the iMac in sig. Have yet to get an external monitor for my PB, not enough desk space in my shared room for a bulky CRT though.

I use a 1710av monitor with my Quadra and B&W G4. The audio quality in this monitor is mostly what is keeping me using it, plus I plan on starting to use iChat more often, so the high quality microphone works great!

Evolution!! I know i know.In ten years robots will replace the human race:eek:

Yup - Apple Studio display 17" Graphite VGA - owned since new. Sony trinitron tube @85mhz 1024x768 is normally my display mode.

Sony E500 21" CRT running 1600x1200 @ 85Hz and million colours with a PM QS800.

huge and bulky but very good image

iMac G3, if that counts. I have a CRT 17" that I just got for free. Not sure what I'm ganna do with it, though.

iMac G3 CRT for me. It's starting to lose quality around the perimeter of the screen, but it still works.

I don't have much experience using LCDs, but CRTs seem sharper, especially for text. My sister's G4 FP iMac has slightly jagged text compared to text on CRTs. Maybe newer LCDs are sharper.

Yep, still use one...only because I haven't invested in an LCD yet :).

I love my CRT. every computer in this house has a TFT apart from the old P3 500mhz machine. I tested out my platform game on it earlier, it ran like a dead dog but the image quality was just deep and the colours rich. from a monitor bought in 1999. Love CRT. but only for 2D pixel gaming. everything else; LCD.
