Unless they update it to cook breakfast and clean the dishes I doubt I'd get the next gen. It is already the smoothest device I've ever operated. The battery life is insane- I often get 11 or 12 hours out of it.

Since I got mine, I seldom turn on my MBP, and my SP4 is only used for travel and taking notes at work. I often have it going while using my MBP or gaming rig as well, playing youtube, twitch, or displaying a reference book or guide. For me it is proving to be the ultimate media consumption device.

It's possible that Apple will do a minor refresh like they did with the iPad Mini 3 which just added colors and Touch ID.

Effectively we'd see maybe a 5 minute mention of a refreshed iPad Pro 12.9" with Rose Gold option, True Tone + wider gamut display and the upgraded Camera.

EDIT: OK I was referring to this fall.

I think we might see all the iPads get skipped this fall, and then updated versions of all 3 sizes Spring 2017. This will help spread revenue and production ramp times out so you have new iPads in spring and new iPhones in fall. So we will have a new iPad Pro in 7.9", 9.7", 12.9" sizes. They will EOL the Mini 2 and Air 2 and keep the Mini 4, and current 9.7" and 12.9" Pro available with price drops. If sales continue to slump we may see them go to 2 year refresh cycles on iPads. Or possibly 2 year cycles on the 7.9" and 12.9" sizes but 1 year on 9.7", etc.

Similar thing with iPhones. I think we won't see a new 4" iPhone until the 7s is revealed, and they will go to 2 year cycles on the 4" phones.

Maybe not if they don't do a redesign for the 13" Macbook Pro at WWDC and it's just the 15", they will do the 13" in the fall and I'm guessing they don't want to have an all-new 13" Macbook Pro go up against a second version 12.9 iPad Pro, so they would wait until a March '17 event to update it.

the 12.9 is selling miserably. The fact that it is on sale so often now is indication of that. I would not be surprised if we never see an update as it was a dud for Apple. They need to make one in between the size of the 12.9 and the 9.7 and it would be a success.

I hope that this isn't the way it goes down. My 12.9" iPP is my favorite device ever.

If Cook continues with his mantra that it is a laptop replacement for a lot of people, it won't go away.

Or you could say that the stratospheric "early adopter" margins of 60% have been slashed down to 40%.

That said, a healthy 40% margin in computing hardware is reminiscent of IBM in the 60's and '70s. Yeah, Apple's crying all the way to the bank. ;)

Sorry if you felt like I was being rude, but exaggerations like "hundreds of threads and topics" deserve an eye roll. Unless you meant posts instead of threads... But I still don't think there are hundreds of posts about this topic from either side.

In any case, I agree that the 9.7 does seem to be a bit more popular, but the 12.9 also has a solid following. I just don't see any grounds for worrying that Apple would abandon the 12.9.

He was suggesting you had a bias for the 9.7, and against the 12.9.

Ahhh, okay, I still don't see how anyone would think I have a bias for either one, lol... but I am a little slow on the uptake sometimes. ;)

As for the "hundreds" thing, yeah it was more or less for a slight exaggeration/dramatic effect (not flame bait whatsoever, that wasn't even close to on my mind.)
I mainly meant there are a lot of threads with: "i'm returning my large iPad Pro for the smaller one" or "why the 9.7 and not the 12.9 is for me." or "why i am not buying the larger ipad pro"... topics like that are many compared to those in favor of the larger iPP. Again that's what I meant with my perspective, I see more threads against the iPP 12.9" more than I see threads in favor of it.

Confirmation bias is the tendency (often subconsciously) to seek out and favour information that validates your opinion or viewpoint. I was suggesting that as you feel the 12.9 isn't as popular as the 9.7, you notice and remember the anti 12.9 threads more than the pro ones

I think this year the ipp will get useful updates only through ios10
We need that lost space between icons on the big one be re-arranged
We need multiple accounts
We need some updates for the slide over tab, like search and the possibility to run two safari tabs at the same time side by side
We need an improvment for icloud drive to act like file manager and easy to copy between all apples devices, ios and macos

Well, as a satisfied owner of a 12.9, I don't feel any urge to post a thread declaring "I'm satisfied with my 12.9, so I'm not buying a 9.7!" I can't speak for other 12.9 owners, but perhaps many of them do feel similarly. I see a lot of posts in "I bought 9.7" threads from people who are satisfied with 12.9, but not many threads are started by satisfied 12.9 owners.

Seeing as how this wasn't a huge hit like Apple wanted,
Really? Where did you read that? I'll be the first to admit that I've not followed the iPad trends, but I thought it was a very popular model.

As for a refresh, unless Apple has some specific and material improvements, they may wait until 2017. I don't think an annual update to iPads makes as much sense as it does for the phones. I think you can actually make a case for the phones to be on a 2 year update cycle now, given the maturity of the product, but that discussion is for another thread :)

I love my 12.9 iPP. I picked it up on launch day and travel with it exstinsively for work. The pencil works great for taking notes and highlighting eBooks/PDF's. The keyboard also works great. There are a couple of things that make me "wonder" about the 12.9 popularity though. I live in the tech center of the world (San Jose, California) and I've only seen two other 12.9 iPP outside the Apple Store.

The other thing that makes me question if Apple will continue to offer the 12.9 is that even Apple itself hasn't added additional cases or covers. The 9.7 iPP arrived with multiple case/cover color options. Even the "old" iPhone 6s is still getting case color updates from Apple. A still the 12.9 iPP only has the gray and white option. It appears that Apple doesn't consider the 12.9 sell volumes to be high enough to warranty additional color options??

I have seen a few 12.9 inches in professional settings, but it is clear the 9.7 inch is going to be the more popular product. When iOS can truly replace a laptop, the 12.9" may end up selling better.

That said, Macbook Pro 13 inchs, Macbook Air, etc are much more popular than the 15 inch Macbook Pro, yet Apple keeps making Macbook Pro 15 inches. The trend for Apple is now more iOS sizes, not fewer.

On the original topic, I can potentially seen an iPad mini update this fall, but it is likely no updates to the iPad line are made until Spring 2017. I personally want to buy an updated 12.9" with the latest cameras.

I am really liking my 12.9 pro as well. I have used it in more ways then I ever used my previous iPads. I think what has hurt sales, if in fact they have been hurt, is the price. Most would agree that the 12" pro is not cheap. There are many more options at this price point. Another reason could be it is not as portable. It's not for everyone, but what device is.

I am an iPad 2 owner ready for the new iPad that Apple would like me to purchase. I was prepared to purchase a 12.9 IPP until the 9.7" IPP was released. However, new features in the 9.7 (advanced LTE and display related improvements primarily) have me waiting to see if 12.9 will be updated this Fall. If Apple only updates 12.9 this Fall while iPhone gets A10 and other upgrades that will raise the question of what the true upgrade schedule for iPad will be. I think Apple needs for all concerned to find some mechanism for setting market expectations for the iPad update/upgrade cycle to help drive the purchasing it wants to encourage. As it stands there must be those who have purchased the 12.9 who are apprehensive that the technological (if not economic) life of their iPad may be too unreasonably foreshortened if there is a Fall 2016 update and yet others who find themselves deferring a current 12.9 purchase concerned that a 2016 12.9 update/upgrade may be in the offing soon.

Not really. I bought the 12.9 iPP in November, 2015, fully expecting the next update to be released in Fall 2016, as that had been the release cycle for iPads the past few years. Thus, if Apple does release the next 12.9 update this Fall, there is no "unreasonable foreshortening" of my iPP's lifespan -- that was exactly what I expected when I bought it. And if there is no update in the Fall, then I gain extra time having the "latest and greatest" 12.9 iPad model.

The ipad pro outsold surface pro 3 and 4 so i guess it is selling well

Even of that's true, I don't think that it's a meaningful comparison. They're very different classes of devices no matter what Apple keeps insisting about its "Pro" devices being laptop replacements.

I think that apple will make a silent update for the 12.9 iPP, just to put it on pair with the smaller pro.
Wait and see
