I just put an XR on my CC and can pick it up today. I think the only way to truly decide is to buy one. I have spent well over an hour at the Apple Store testing side by side.. but until I USE it I won’t know for sure. I feel bad for buying/returning but I shouldn’t since most of these ‘pro’ YouTubers do this all the time..

The difference between OLED and LCD is obvious when comparing them side by side, but just doesn't matter in real-world use cases. I have two Android phones, a Galaxy S7 with SAMOLED, and a Moto G with LCD, and the taller 18:9 screen has MUCH more impact on the G6 than the type of screen. If you look at them side by side with a lot of black on the screen, the difference is obvious, but when actually using the device, it has virtually no impact.

Nope. Besides isn’t the XR using three year old technology, it’s screen rez or something? I seem to remember reading that on this board.

There are quite a few people who do this, and nothing is wrong with it. A YouTube review of a device can only help so much...you have to actually use the device to really know if you will like it or not.

I love my new XR, coming from the X.
Way better battery (almost double on screen time), better camera (i rarely use zoom/effects), faster, bigger (but not that much) and, last but not least, i find it really nicer in Red.

Is the screen different? Yes but again: not that much.
First day of use: "wow, this screen is somehow different...will impact my daily activities?"
Second day of use: "i can't find differences except the black color less...black"
Third day of use: "Beautiful screen, no regret at all".

That's my experience coming from the X.

Using it now.
First thoughts beyond that I’ve already said the screen is great.

- Heavy in a gel Otterbox case.. I would never use this but it’s all they had.
- virtually ZERO color-shift, vertical or horizontal.
- Fits well in jeans pocket, even in this case
- The FaceID animation is colorful, unlike the XS
- Text is smaller so I’m using 3rd from smallest setting instead of 2nd from smallest

Have XS, considering returning for XR. If XR is ‘small enough’ it might work. I have compared them exhaustively and at this point all I can do is buy an XR to determine for sure. I hate to do the Buy/Return thing.. but it’s hard not to as I will be using the phone for at least a year.

I compared them to my 7 Plus. The Max, of course, is the exact same size. The XR is almost the same size. The X(S) is much smaller.

You could visit a store.

I’m skeptical because of this video.

I have spent over an hour in-store, several trips, comparing the XS and XR. I needed to use it. It’s a $1K decision. The white so reminds me of the 3G and 4.

if you go from an x to an xr its a down grade not an upgrade and if you think the xr screen is just as good as the amoled x screen your eyes are needing upgraded not your phone lol
I have tested devices professionally for a living so my eyes are good. I understand ‘beyond the specs’.. some don’t.
[doublepost=1541092006][/doublepost]If cool with folks here I will just post thoughts as I can.. and as I notice.. hopefully this helps others.

Bezels.. I had ignored these comments.. They aren’t BAD.. but it is like there is a side ‘lip’ and then a black space of 3mm or so.. again.. some may not care.. I don’t really care but a difference from the XS.

i dont test screens / devices for a living and can see the difference its night and day between them not saying the screen is rubbish on xr by all means but no were as good as the amoled pannel on the x or xs

Both OLED and LCD have positives and negatives. Neither is perfect. LCD is more ‘evolved’ than OLED. For many, including myself, the color-shift of the OLED is not appreciated. I like consistent colors. It is not uncommon or me to edit full-size Raw images from my ‘real’ camera on my phone. I want to see accurate WB/tones. Color-shift on the OLED affects this.

The PPI issue, in regards to text, is 98% non-issue. Can I see an EXTREMELY small difference in text color density? Yes. However, it’s Ike a 10 on my XS and a 9.5 on the XR.

I am digging into video now. WTS, I don’t prioritize video so I don’t care to have the ‘blackest blacks’.

This sentiment (bolded) is popping up a lot in this thread. I can see it either way: for some people it's an upgrade, for others it's a downgrade. For me, personally, I consider X -> XR to be a clear upgrade, thanks to the camera/Smart HDR, processor, and battery life. Yes, the screen is certainly a downgrade, but as long as it's good enough (which seems to be the case with the XR) this just isn't particularly important to me.

Now, if the XR's LCD looked like utter crap, I wouldn't care about its other features. But from all accounts, and from my own personal experience, the LCD is fine. Better than fine.

Even so, if I was really interested in picture quality/screen tech/resolution, then I'd probably consider the XR to be a downgrade from the X. Apparently that's how a lot of people feel. Neither opinion is wrong.

I use three computers with three different monitors. One is 27" 1440p, one is 24" 1440p, and one is 27" 5K... Yes the 5K looks great and all, but honestly I am never bothered by the differences.

For the same reason I am not bothered by the XR and the XS displays. I actually did look at the phones side-by-side. The XR did not bother me at all except I was not fond of the backlight on a black screen (ie: crop boxes when watching videos) which I guess means I've been a little spoiled by the OLED display.

Was I ever tempted? Maybe a little when they announced it. Honestly I'd probably have gone with the XR if I didn't already buy the XS.

I agree 100% which is why I am getting an XR in January when I can trade in my X

Agree. I never said XS/X has a bad screen. I am saying that the XR screen is way better than I expected it to be.. and I expected it to be better than average.

Also, for many the color-shift if from highly annoying to a deal-breaker.

The XR screen is nice and close to the glass, YT over cellular looks good. Yes, it maxes out at 720p60 but it looks really crisp.

Yes. That LCD screen is horrible. Not horrible in the sense it’s bad because it’s not but the resolution and the fact it’s an LCD screen makes it a no no for me. It’s good enough to be fine for the average user but OLED is the way to go?

So you are not an "average user" because you use OLED?

hahaha

Hahah is right.

Apple's LCDs are actually pretty good which is one of the reasons I haven't ran out and upgraded from the 8 Plus... (along with not caring about Face ID or the notch)

This is someone who owns a 65" LG OLED so I know good and well how awesome OLED is... but it's not something I feel the need for on my phone. OLED is best viewed in a dark environment (like my home theater) so those deep blacks and other OLED perks just don't look as good in a bright environment which is how most everyone uses their phone.

Home theater and a phone screen are apples and oranges... I'll be upgrading eventually but OLED definitely isn't something I feel I have to run out and get today on my phone.

Now for the home theater... it's OLED all the way.

“For the average user” so what you’re trying to say is that you’re better than us average users, because you have an OLED screen? I can’t lol. Some of you really need to get a grip
[doublepost=1541081429][/doublepost]
The facts are the differences that some are trying to make such a big deal about (screen, bigger bezels, etc) aren’t really that big or noticeable. Some just like throwing it around that they have the “better” phone and are above the “budget” version.

Lol you’re fishing so bad. Some people just don’t care as long as it’s an iPhone. Those people wouldn’t care as long as it looks good enough to be pixelated. The XR is fine for that.

Apples LCD is fine and I took the 7 over the plus because of phone size m. That being said the oled panel on the X is miles ahead better then the lcd panel being used. It’s better period. I actually have my X between 50-60% brightness and it’s fine outside. Sometimes I kick it a bit higher but otherwise it’s fine. Oled is fine outside these days.

My friend had a iPhone xs he had to switch to the iPhone XR because the oled screen shattered and he didn’t have enough money to get it fixed so he bought a XR and he says that that he misses the way the screen was on the iPhone Xs but he loves that if he broke the screen in it again he would be able to buy a cheaper screen

Ok ? That’s a personal problem. $300 some odd to fix the screen is cheaper then buying a xR so the logic is flawed but ok

Cool... still doesn't change what I said as far as best viewing environments and what not pertaining to OLED. I did all the research prior to dropping $2500 on one... LOL

As someone else said in the thread... side by side he could see a slight difference between the LCD and OLED phones but it wasn't a jaw dropping difference and it won't be either. Apple's LCDs are the cream of the crop.

Enjoy the upgrade though... for me I'm fine with waiting another year.

I’ll be honest, after seeing how positive the reviews have been, and the beautiful colors, and the pictures taken from the XR, I’m starting to contemplate upgrading to the XR. I know it sounds insane, but I had my doubts at first but they were all proven wrong after seeing professional and average user reviews on it. Anyone else feel the same way, or am I just crazy?

Nope...not at all.

For me, I was worried about losing 2x zoom lens. But last night I went for a walk and took pics of some Halloween displays using zoom in the dark and the pictures came out nice and clear and depicted in most cases what my eyes were seeing. I really could not see the degradation in image quality to the degree I was expecting after long experience with digital zoom on many past and current model phone cameras. Sometimes I needed to use Halide app to get some tricky lighting situations optimized. But most of the time the stock camera app was spot on.

Ok? Oled is vastly superior to lcd which is why I bought my Note 8 instead at launch vs waiting to see if the X was true or not. I needed a phone in September and yeah I could of returned the note 8 but the x came out in November and I needed a phone that day. I had an opportunity to get a X for $20 a month and even including the buyout the phone would cost me $650 not $1,000 otherwise I probably would of kept my Note 8. Colors look better , and considering I use my phone for everything I required an oled screen. Tbh for TVs I don’t care as much and got a Sony X900E series tv and it was fine. I rather have an oled panel for my phone then a TV.

The Samsung panel Apple uses is amazing and you can clearly tell the difference and I am comparing it to a friends 7.
